Cool Stuff: Avatar AMP Suit Maquette

AMP Suit

When I first saw the line of Avatar action figures and toys at Comic-Con, I was disappointed. They were stationed right next to the life-size AMP Suit, that is beyond awesome. But the figures just looked cheap. Why isn’t McFarlane making more toys these days? But when I heard that Sideshow Collectibles would be producing a collector’s line of statues and maquettes, I became excited once again.

Who wouldn’t want to own a scale version of the AMP Suits? Well the AMP Suit Maquette has officially gone on sale on SideShowToy.com, but it’s a lot more expensive than anyone could have imagined: $1199.99. The life-size Iron Man bust was almost half the price, $699. That’s right, its expensive… too expensive. But that won’t stop us from featuring this highly detailed maquette in Cool Stuff.

Created in conjunction with the film’s special effects studio Legacy Effects, directly from 3D scans of the 14-foot suit used during filming, the AMP Suit is a truly authentic scaled representation.

Each piece is individually painted and finished, each with its own unique quality and detail that is the trademark of a handcrafted Sideshow Collectibles product.

The AMP Suit stands 30 inches high, and the display is 24 inches in width and depth.

These look great. I just hope they look and move even better in the movie. District 9's mech, which I dubbed the Power Loader of 2009. Is what I'm using as a template from here on out when it comes to comparing robot suits.
  • freemachine
Sorry, but the District 9 mech-suit is sooooooo much cooler than these.
  • VentureStar
The District 9 mech is an ALIEN mech, a stylized anime design and would look out of place in Avatar's hard sci-fi near future military force.
  • starscream9289
They seriously need to make some District 9 merchandise!
  • Frederik
I agree. That mech was aaawesome!
  • jonny
Its cool... Its just not 1000$ cool.
  • The mech looks incredible. That is the most detail I have ever seen on maquette before, in terms of grunge and detail to being battle worn. Great job Sideshow.
  • Bronski
Meh. Sorry, District 9 blew this one out of the water. These just look like the APC suits from The Matrix.

    Pass.
  • Michael
Cameron did a short film before Terminator and it had a loader/mech like robot in it, then later on did aliens, same thing, now Avatar, same thing... He's revisited the well quite a bit, huh. Anyone else notice this?
  • Maybe he should do a movie based on the Mech Warrior Franchise next.
  • Having seen the AVATAR preview footage today, I'm hesitant to buy a movie ticket, let alone drop $1k+ on an AVATAR toy.
  • Browncoat1138
How could you have seen the footage? I saw the 25min at SDCC and I'm seeing the preview 15min tonight. how did you see it already?
  • Screened in Australia about 8 hours ago. We get the actual film about 48 hours before you do, too - on the 17th here, which is still teh 16th over there.

Am I the only one who thinks these AMPsuits are lame/boring?.. you know.. like in the opposite of badass/awesome..
  • No, you are not alone.
  • This has to be the ugliest Mech i have ever seen.
  • Brian
I've always wondered who buys these things? Sure, I can see a $100-300ish statue being a nice collectible or gift, but what kind of rich geek buys these things??
  • Rockie
i think it looks cool as shit

basically if i would wanna ride it, its cool
  • Don't see what all the fuss is ... it's just an ED209 with green paint.
  • dsahawker
    UHMMMM WHAT?

dude don't disgrace ED209 like that...and its not remotely close to ED...not even. I think you need a google image search for a refresher
  • jeffe
Fine suit, but I agree, the one in D9 blows this one away. I'd have to say that even the mechs in Matrix Revolutions are cooler. But that's just me..
  • jeffe
Woops, hadn't seen your comment yet there, Bronski.
  • Browncoat1138
I think this one is like The Matrix Mech 2.0. The thing has a giant fuckin machete! Am I the only one that thinks that's the most badass thing??

Oh, and this is NOTHING like ED209. Ed209 is badass, but let's face it, the AT-ST could run circles around ED209
  • Browncoat1138
    ABSOLUTELY BADASS!

I saw the prototype on the floor at Comic Con and I wanted it soooo bad. I loved the mech in District 9, and next to the Power Loader, it is one of the best mech suits out there. But this AMP... if it wasn't for the Prawn tech on that D9 suit, I'm pretty sure that Ripley driving one of these AMPs could EASILY take down that D9 one... but that one did have the most awesome guns. ZAP!! *Body vaporization*

I'm really holdin out that there will be a scene in AVATAR where Sigourney's character (I think you know where I'm going with this) will hop in one of the AMPs and knock over some poor soul and defend a Navi from a big motha fuckin creature and then just let it fly, "Get away from her you bitch!"

Best fight scene ever.. and NO CGI!!! and it looks amazing! Take notes Spielberg and Lucas, that's right, you guys can't get through a simple adventure film anymore without having a series of CG monstrosities doing stupid crap on screen. But i ramble.

I think this is as badass as mech suits go, but would i pay $1000 for a model like this... FUCK NO! I'll buy the toy from Matel
  • dsahawker
The Prawn mech would just gobble up everything thrown at it and spit it back at the AMP....the Prawn would OWN the AMP.

    its true...no denying it
  • Browncoat1138
Like I said, if the prawn suit didn't have that fucking amazing weaponry, and it went hand to hand with the AMP, I'm pretty sure the AMP would take it. It would be one hell of a fight and a really really close call. I'm pretty sure that both suits would have missing arms and legs, leaking oil, destroyed nav systems, and holes every which way, but the AMP would stand victorious before collapsing.
  • jrice73
I would almost bet that Weta Collectibles will do a D9 battle suit statue at some point and it will be way lower in price than the Sideshow AMP.

This suit is not as good as D9. D9's Mech Suit has a universal Armor and Weaponry. AVATAR mech suit only takes on earths level with air land and gravity, while prawns mech suit (aka: D9's robot) is super made its form to a universal one it has a full bodied metal armor that u can only see outside by means of monitor graphicaly sensor inside, while this avatar suit has a glass shield which is vulnerable to hard matters and of course the special in D9's Mech Suit is the weaponry its made of natures disaster weapon at anyfield or any level of area in either without gravity air or even outside the earth. for example the main weapon is a electrical rod its like a lightning that anywere in the universe can be fired, not like AVATARS mech suit its only weapon loads are a bullet which is only can fire at earths level. Do you think some other planet has air? or oxigen? or maybe some has no gravity which is the bullet could not fire in its bcos it has no air. Its seems the best Mech Suit is District 9 and i love it the highest technology ever...
