Bryan Singer

A possible return to the X-Verse, an adaptation of a folk tale or another cinematic pass at… er… a folk saga. Why all of these Bryan Singer projects at once? Who knows, but I’m definitely not complaining.

After some wrangling, Warner Bros. and Legendary have secured the rights to remake John Boorman’s Excalibur with Singer linked as producer and possible director. A curious move as the source material, even if you count that as Malory and not just the Arthurian myths in essence, is definitely in the public domain. What is it about Boorman’s version that they wanted to secure? Maybe it’s just a preemptive move to totally lock out any potential of a lawsuit? Gotta love megabudget filmmaking and it’s wheelbarrows of dollarcrats.

The same story tells us that “Singer has been flirting with directing” the X-Men: First Class side-quel. A little surprising, perhaps, that of the in-development X-pictures it is this one and not the next Wolverine movie he’s being linked with, not least because his regular collaborator Christopher McQuarrie has set about scripting that one.

None of First Class, Excalibur or Battlestar Galactica seems likely to be Singer’s next directing project however, with the same Variety story suggesting that he’s currently gearing up to move on Jack the Giant Killer. They describe the story as being about “a young farmer who leads an expedition into the land of the giants to recover a kidnapped princess”. Something of a departure for the director, but a welcome one. There are so many riches in the pantheons of folklore and fairy tale that I’d love to see more of them hooked up with directors of this calibre.

Like many of Singer’s recently revealed engagements, Giant Killer has been filmed before. Apparently, there’s two versions of Nathan Juran’s 1962 picture - one with musical numbers, one without - and while I don’t recall any song and dance in the movie I passed the time with on a good few weekend afternoons in my youth, it doesn’t meant they weren’t there.

Jack the Giant Killer has been written by Darren Lemke and Mark Bomback, the only draft of the First Class script so far known is by OC creator Josh Schwartz, and Singer has yet to find a scriptwriter for Excalibur. I wonder if Neil Jordan’s not too busy while The Graveyard Book is still gearing up?

It would be interesting to see Singer attached to another X film but I think a new take on it would be even better(And keep Brett Ratner away from the franchise)

'Excalibur' is a classic. It should be illegal to remake a film as fine as that, especially when you have jack-ass at the helm. Screw Bryan Singer!

I could have swore you guys just confirmed a week ago that he's directing Battlestar Galactica, so what is all this crap?

Don't forget that Warren Ellis is writing an Excalibur script. Ellis and Singer, now that is a movie combo I would go see. http://www.warrenellis.com/?p=7579

X-1 was okay at best. He did a decent job of introducing the characters but the over all story was bad...and this is coming from a hardcore X-Men fan since the 80's. Now X-2 was done really, really well.

I personally think that Brett Ratner gets too much negative attention for X-3. If I remember correctly, Ratner came late to production and it's really the writers and FOX to blame.

So my reaction to Singer returning to the X-Verse...It would be great if he does a First Class movie like the style of X-2 and Marvel has the X-Verse back at Marvel Studious. FOX will mess it all up no matter who directs the next X-Men, Wolverine or Fantastic Four movie.

Not to sound like a broken record on the net but give Marvel back X-Men, Wolverine, the Fantastic Four, Daredevil, Elektra and anything related to Marvel!

Instead of making all of these X-Men prequels, Bryan Singer should just come back to do a X-Men 4 which follows X3. X4 should have to bring back Cyclops and Xavier and end the series in a good note.
  • Sad to hear no Superman story in this article but I guess it wasn't meant to be. I wouldn't mind seeing singer come back for another X-movie. This is exactly what First Class needs. It definitely doesn't need some other director that can make something like X-3 or Wolverine.

I get so confused when it comes to this stuff. one minute people are bitching about someones movies then the next they realize they like it and want that person to do more. Im not saying that's the case with the author, but with regards to the xmen filmes, Ive seen it happen again and again and it still happens over and over. I get the sense people are too ready to jump on the hate wagon too soon. If a movie is genuinely bad then there is no dismissing it but most are just lost hopes. Take the first Hulk for example. It seems a lot of people didnt like it. For a hulk film I thought it was great to finally see the big guy on screen. The movie wasnt bad it just didnt have the depth and quality people would have hoped for. The 2nd was much much closer. All im saying is that there are always reasons to hate on something just as there are reasons to love something, you just have to want to find them.

In the end I wouldnt mind seeing someone else have a go at the new xmen movie. Someone who could do it in a really good way. If it goes to Bryan Singer again then I guess I will watch that film.

Yeah, but Singer has directed the only 2 good X-Men films. Last Stand and Wolverine were shite. People aren't jumping on the hate wagon too soon, X-Men and X-2 have always been loved.

I rather have Singer direct another Superman sequel (which I agree from the podcast) but I'm down for First Class.

Isn't DJ Caruso making a giant movie too?? Are giants the new vampires??
  • Hey man, whatever keeps him away from that Battlestar Galactica thing is a good thing, I say

Please, please, please come back to the X-verse...it hasn't been the same without you.
