The Wolfman Movie Trailer

wolfman_trailer_2

Last year at Comic Con, Universal showed off the first footage from Joe Johnston’s The Wolfman. Now over a year later, after some reshoots, effects tweaks and a couple of release date changes for the film, the trailer is online for your perusal. Yahoo has the clip for the update of the classic film, starring Benicio Del Toro, Emily Blunt, Anthony Hopkins and Hugo Weaving. Also available are a handful of new stills, which went live last night in anticipation of the trailer debut. See the stills and trailer after the break.

What you’ll see here is very much like what we saw at Comic Con in 2008. That footage was considerably more violent and gory (there were some eviscerated guts, etc) but this trailer and the old clip summarize the story in basically the same way. Last year, makeup guru Rick Baker wasn’t too keen on the level of gore in the film, and it’s hard to tell from this whether that’s been dialed down or not. We can see, however, that there’s some good old-fashioned weirdness going on. Maybe a trip to the famous Bedlam home for the insane, and definitely a few sequences of the transformed Benicio exploring London and the suburbs.

There was also concern about how the transformation sequences would look. This trailer seems designed almost expressly to address those qualms, and the transformation looks pretty great. Baker is known for his amazing practical werewolf effects in An American Werewolf in London, and the blend of CGI and practical effects seen here looks excellent. For that alone I’m still extremely curious about the film. Marvel fans consider, too, that this is by the director of Captain America, so if you haven’t seen The Rocketeer in a while, this could be a refresher course on his style and approach.

The Wolfman opens on February 12, 2010…for now.

Haha. This was definitely better than the Avatar trailer
  • Agreed!
  • Gelman
From the still I thought it was colonial America in Washington, D.C.

That's a setting which hasn't really been exploited in the horror realm.
  • agreed! the setting and time period are very unique for a horror film.
  • plagueoftruth
    Other than 'Sleepy Hollow.'
  • dabman
Problem is Washington D.C. didn't exist in colonial times. It wasn't founded until 1790.

    100%

Thought it would be a bad movie coz the studio have changed the date for so many time...but after this trailer I am totally converted! Looks really classic and definitely looking forward to it.
  • ptek
Looks like a pretty straightforward remake, which I actually like. Could have the potential of a Kenneth Branaugh Frankenstein. But why are all werewolves these days so CG'd Up? That American Werewolf werewolf still scares me, because I believe it's there.
  • tenno
Much better than I was expecting, hope this was a case of studio pushing back to allow them to polish the effects a bit and nothing more. I love the look of the paired setting, really looking forward to this.
  • Browncoat1138
    Looks ok.
But whats up with that Logo, it's like they bought it from their local 99 Cent logo store.
  • Meli_V
In the middle of the trailer it becomes a little melodramatic, but I'm still excited to see this film, despite the fact they keep pushing the release, which makes me a tad nervous and frustrated. Anthony Hopkins is fabulous and that little laugh of his so eerie.

it's hard to tell how much of the wolfman is cg. anyone know?

i don't understand why the studios think cg looks good. the creatures from where the wild things are look 100 times better than cg wolfman or blue avatar things.

still the trailer was surprisingly good. benicio is always great though.
  • brian
the fact that you can't tell how much of the wolfman is cg says a lot about your comment

movies wouldn't have advanced anywhere near where they are now without cg
  • jheb
i meant comparatively how much of the time in the film is it a cg wolfman and how much of the time is he non cg. we could all do with a little less cg.

    botard.
  • Sweet.
  • overwatch
It's close to midnight and something evil's lurking in the dark.
  • I don't care how many times they change the release date, I'm going. I'm looking forward to seeing a werewolf transformation on the big screen again.
  • I didn't realize Hugo Weaving was in this. That just made this a must see for me.
  • Looks like fun.
  • Anrkist
I'd like to ask the trailer production team to go easy on the fade effect. It blinked every 3 seconds for 75% of the trailer. Very distracting. Seems I was the only one to notice though.

    Movie still looks good.
  • zebrat
no, i noticed it way before you did. i just don't care.
  • asianrage
Looks good. Hopefully, the movie will be as good as the trailer promises.
  • Am I the only one bothered that Del Toro has an American accent whilst everyone else has a British accent? Maybe the story addresses it? From the preview I'm guessing Del Toro's character has not been home in quite some time. A little "Valkyrie"-ish.
  • Well, it is set in Colonial Washington, so it's most likely the father is just British from before the Revolution. Same goes for others in the cast, while Benicio could have been native born. I don't know, maybe I'm just justifying things that don't need justifying. Movie looks great though.
  • No denying it looks great! Hope it's a bloodbath!
  • Hmm but didn't Hugo introduce himself as an inspector from Scotland Yard? What's Scotland Yard doing in Washington?

And actually, Scotland Yard wasn't built until 1829 (seeing as SC is actually the police force's HQ), so no colonial times. Even less of a reason for a British inspector to be hanging out in the States.

So either Benicio forgot to go to his diction coach, or his character has been away from home for so long his Brit accent is gone.
  • This is looking really beautiful, better than expected. I want to see Universal reviving this kind of films in the future and make people interested in Universal's horror classics. I'm very excited for this.
  • lucasfrombuenosaires
    Yes we are back.
    I love the wolfmen.
This give me back my soul, the one that robe me the awful concept of the AvaWTFar.
That trailer make me think of Battlefield Earth but without the sense of humor.
  • donivan
"I will kill all of you!"
  • Sketch
    Sweeeeeeeet.
  • Can't wait! Love Benicio. Love Joe Johnston. This trailer looks fantastic. MUCH better than the overhyped cartoon "Avatar."
  • "Terrible things Lawrence, you've done terrible things" Looks awesome! #wolfman
  • From a visual standpoint, it looks stunning. The only reason for the bad word of mouth is maybe the tone is like Coppola's Dracula. Hopefully, that will be fixed before it opens.
  • The Great Cambino
Looks awesome. It's about time we get a proper horror period-piece again!
  • Does anyone see Gollum in this trailer ? LOL
  • Not impressed with this or Avatar.
  • HectorN
Wow, maybe you're only inpressed with cameron diaz's movies, who knows!
  • This movie is horribly stupid. It is a 10 million dollar premise dressed up in a 100 million dollar budget.

Wolfman is so easy. Take a regular guy, cut to the moon, cut back to the guy and whaddya know he's a werewolf. The dialogue is badly cliched and old-timey and only old-timey when it wanted to be, the mythology is masturbatory, the plot structure is no different from any other werewolf story, but the film looks absolutely beautiful. Its one of those movies where they would actually write a scene just because it would LOOK good (eg the mythology scene. And a minor question: Why would THAT night the dude go cast silver bullets?) And all those big names are rendered (BDT literally) models, who do things only according to how it would best suit the cinematography.

Stupid movie. As hard as they tried to redefine the subgenre or whatever, they still made another shitty Werewolf movie.
  • John
That looked really cool. The effects look great. Looking forward to this now.
  • sauce_1
It smells like a flop to me.
    Guess I'm in the minority:
Loved Avatar trailer, thinks Wolfman looks like rubbish.
  • that was awesome, now i dont mind if they needed to tweak the movie to make it even better

    i love monster movies
  • Yeah, that actually looks really solid. Great cast, some really great line readings and good monster make up. I'm in. I found that more compelling than the Avatar trailer today (which I think looks fine.)
  • washurfilthyvag
    where are the gypsies?
  • Fir3Wolf
I think the trailer looked pretty good, I've seen every type of werewolf movie to been released so far and this one will be no different.
  • dagreenman18
Benicio Del Toro is really unconvincing as a Brit. That being said THIS movie is going to rock, and Hugo Weaving's moustache is awesome.
  • freemachine
"The Wolfman opens on February 12, 2010…"

LOL! That's like the graveyard for shitty films.
  • hungryhippo
I thought Benicio Del Toro was playing Lawrence as someone who migrated as a kid to the US & goes back as an adult, hence the accent.

    Looks great.
Vegabro is a fun killer & doesn't seem to undertsand that this is THE original werewolf story. Dolt!
THAT night is probably a 'Full Moon Night'. Hence the silver bullet prep work. Duh!
  • jparso3
Sorry folks the CGI for the wolf transformation looks really bad. I mean you can tell it was fake.

Also why is it being released in February? Why not in October during halloween time?
  • Kenneth
Looks great and I must admit that there can´t be to many classic werewolf-movies in the world.

Benicio-Del Toro looks suitable to be playing The Wolfman. Want more.
