Fourth Jason Bourne Film Finds Another Screenwriter

A fourth film in the Jason Bourne series is still in active development, despite recent speculation otherwise. Last week Matt Damon told Entertainment Weekly that they don’t yet “have a story and we don’t have a script.” Universal has apparently moved on and hired another screenwriter Josh Zetumer to write what is being described as “a parallel script.”

But what happened to screenwriter George Nolfi, who was brought on to the project in October 2008? Did he not produce anything? Back in April, producer Frank Marshall said that Universal is hoping to have a fourth Bourne movie in theaters for Summer 2011, and that they would have a draft by June.

Nolfi was forced to depart from the project to ready The Adjustment Bureau, which goes into production next month. Universal hopes that Nolfi will return to Bourne 4 after Bureau wraps production, although it isn’t clear if the studio will go with one of the two stories or combine drafts.

As THR points out, while the practice is somewhat rare, studios have commissioned multiple parallel drafts for past films, usually tentpoles. Examples include Star Trek: Generations, Fantastic Four: The Rise of the Silver Surfer and Wolverine. Some people believe that one of the many reasons Wolverine was such a mess is that they were shooting pages from two completely different drafts of the project.

Josh Zetumer broke onto the scene in 2006 with a spec called Villain, which places in the top of the 2006 Black List (a list compiled by industry insiders of the top unproduced screenplays of the year). John Stockwell had become attached to direct. Zetumer also penned a remake of Dune for Peter Berg and The Infiltrator, a Leonardo DiCaprio vehicle based on a Atlantic Monthly article about British intelligence agency spies planted in the Irish Republican Army to monitor terrorist activities.

As for the story… Marshall has previously stated that he would like to see Bourne go to South America in his next adventure, which will be the first movie not based on a Robert Ludlum novel.

"the first movie not based on a Robert Ludlum novel"

LOL. True to some extent, though arguably none of the Bourne films have been remotely similar to the novels they share the same titles with.

Now that the Blackbriar mess has been cleared up, and the CIA no longer needs to dispose of Bourne, what next? I suspect a storyline more similar to Supremacy: a direct arch adversary rather than his former employers.

"don’t yet have a story and we don’t have a script."

Did any of the other Bourne films? Wouldn't make much of a difference I don't think.

Also, Damon looks like a woman in that picture.

this might not be a bad thing. usually more and more re-writes mean trouble but this could be positive. make sure the movie has an above average script at the least.
  • Its not even a rewrite, but an entirely new script.

Even better! It deserves a top notch script so bourne can go out as the best spy movie franchise ever.

To me, bourne is like Val kilmers The Saint. It started all the awesome spy stuff for me.

A little piece of advice to Matt Damon from our friend Nancy Reagan....."JUST SAY NO!!!!!" The bourne trilogy is great as is and should be put to bed. I know the studio doesn't care about anything but making a buck, but why is Matt Damon wanting on board? The only thing i can think of is that Damon wants to do some of his own projects (ala christopher nolan) and the only way the studio will let him is if he agrees to do more bourne films (ala more batman movies for nolan). Ok the best screenwriter for Bourne are Tony Gilroy or George Nolfi....and if both of them aren't attached forget about it. Damon i suppose you want to do a sequel to "Good Will Hunting" next right?? Knock it off!!

You give him too much credit. He has no options, no future plans, and needs a paycheck lest he ends up like his unemployed friend Affleck.

No options.... Have you taken at look at IMDB lately? He has several other projects he's working on. Do your homework before you post.
  • And this is why studios have no soul. Look at the beginning of Identity and the ending of Ultimatum. It was perfect. We've come full circle, so why fuck it up?

    And now this! Bad news.

Thank you "YoungZero", this is what i have been telling everyone!!! The trilogy was written brilliantly, beginning he's floating in ocean, the ending floating in ocean. Ok he remembers already, ENOUGH STUDIO SCHMUCKS! I wish people would just flat out cold stop going to see movies that are obviously out to just make a buck...like this one, like all the remakes hollywood is spewing out in a hurry...because if we quit paying to see the garbage, hollywood would cut that shit out immediately!!
