IMDB’s The Top Rated Films of the New Millennium

imdb 2000

The Internet Movie Database have announced The Top Rated Films of the New Millennium, looking at the 15 films made since 2000 that IMDb users have rated as the best of the new millennium. Usually people are quick to write off the IMDb user ratings as fanboy controlled, but I was surprised to four foreign and three animated films on the list, films from Darren Aronofsky and Michel Gondry, in addition to the expected trilogy and comic book heros. Check out the full list after the jump.

Discuss: Forget the order of titles, as we could argue about that for a year… Which films shouldn’t have made it, and which films should be on the list, but aren’t?

15. Requiem for a Dream (2000)
14. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)
13. Spirited Away (2001)
12. The Pianist (2002)
11. The Lives of Others (2006)
10. The Departed (2006)
9. Amélie (2001)
8. Wall-E (2008)
7. The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002)
6. Memento (2000)
5. Up (2009)
4. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
3. City of God (2002)

  • Taco
I don't think Amelie deserves to be one here.
  • Taco
    Dammit, ON* here.
  • bonchampion
    False.

This movie represents the best in modern characterization. A combination of narration, non-verbal, and dialogue that results in truly falling in love with the characters. Do not discount this movie because it doesn't say something deep or because it has a quirky style (which has been copied to no end). This is true mastery of craft in my opinion.
  • Taco
I'm not saying it was a bad film, it was pretty enjoyable. But did I fall in love with the characters? No. They were pleasant, but not particularly memorable or impactful. And do I think it should be on basically a "best 15 films since 2000" list? No, because there have been many better films since then, in my opinion. Oldboy, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, Adaptation, Magnolia, There Will Be Blood, No Country for Old Men, The Fountain, Before Sunset.

This is my opinion of course and I don't expect you to agree. Afterall, that is one of the great things about film; everyone has their own reaction to whatever movie they're watching. But yeah, my point remains.
  • Taco
Just remembered Magnolia came out in 1999, my bad.
  • babyjaypan
    u fuckin up, taco!!!
  • Amelie is fucking fantastic. Do you LIKE love?

I disagree with the lord of the rings trilogy taking up three spaces. pick one or leave it out altogether. lvoe that they included The Lives of Others, but think Spirited Away should be replaced by Mononoke, if anything.
  • paranoidandroid9
Mononoke was released in 1997 I believe ;)
  • whoops! too bad, i sort of dug it more than spirited away. not that THAT wasnt epic as well..
  • ALK
Glad you said The Fountain, Taco. I don't expect many people to agree, but I thought that film was unbelievably beautiful and is one of my favorites.
  • thelastknowngod
i agree. Aronofsky got a lot of good press for The Wrestler but it doesnt even come close to The Fountain or Requiem.

The Fountain is def in my top 10.
  • Cygnus_X_2112
Totally agree here. The Fountain is without a doubt one of the most beautiful films ever. I love it.
  • Absolutely. The Fountain was one of the most amazing movies i have ever seen. Then i think about beautiful movies i think about The Fountain.
  • zebrat
that's nice Taco but this is a TOP RATED list. our subjective opinions really don't matter at this point. it's a fact based list and the fact is that Amelie got pretty good ratings. saying it doesn't deserve to be on this list doesn't make any sense at all. but, whatever.
  • Browncoat1138
Amelie is an overrated pile of crap. Cinematography is great, casting is excellent, production design and direction are flawless... I can't stand the characters, and the story is so predictable. I know that everyone and their brother loves this movie. Good for you, doesn't deserve this list.
  • Actually I think because everyone and their brother loves this movie, it does in fact make the list.
  • darkloardpiggy
as far As beautiful films go, i would Mos Definitely put Sunshine on this list. Its a perfect example of getting so much out of so little. Also would probably add 'little miss sunshine', 'departures', 'sympathy for mr vengeance', or even 'transformers (circa 2007)' Well, thats my oppinion anyway/
  • LukeB
It's probably still too early to correctly judge it, but the more I think about it, the more I think District 9 deserves a place on that list.
  • Browncoat1138
District 9 was badass. Probably one of the most amazing science fiction pieces of the decade, or of the past 20 years.

I would have liked to have seen Pan's Labyrinth on there. but yeah... use only one LOTR... preferably Fellowship since it was the best one. I can't believe they put Two TOwers on there.. that's like... the Phantom Menace of the series. Eh, just my opinion.
  • mbellerbrock
You realize it's based on user ratings and not the IMDb staff's opinion right? That's like saying something like "I can't believe rottentomatoes gave District 9 only a 89%," it's out of the staff's control. Nice name btw.
  • gshueey
Really, the past 10 years have lead to this list.
  • Nokoo
    Where's Gladiator and Oldboy?
  • Spelledwrong?
Throw out one of the Lord of the Ring movies, and insert Old Boy.
  • Browncoat1138
    Agreed
  • Up really? I didn't even think it was a top 3 Pixar movie
  • mbellerbrock
I think you're the one of the first people I've seen admit that, but I agree, it was good, but it was no WALL-E, or Toy Story, or Monster's Inc, or Finding Nemo.
  • Bob
Wall-E didn't do it for me at all. I feel that Up was by far a better movie than both Wall-E and Monster's Inc. Wall-E didn't hook me emotionally like Up did in parts, and Up was more entertaining. Toy Story was too revolutionary for me to include in this discussion.
  • Chip
Toy Story, for me, is the best Pixar film, no question. I love Toy Story 2, Finding Nemo, WALL-E, and The Incredibles, too. Really, I enjoy all Pixar films, and Up was no exception. In the end, I prefer Up to WALL-E, because I felt that everything that happened in Up supported the story really well. I loved the characters, and I felt that the pacing was wonderful. Also, the ending to this movie was beautiful.
  • clarencesomerset
TDK and LOTR on top is a sure sign of fanboy rule. Also, the relative lack of foreign films (Only Spirited Away, The Lives of Others, Amelie & City of God)
  • NickN328
I have no problem with great films being on the top of the list.
  • International_J
Foreign films take up more than 1/4 of the list. You must also realize that most foreign films never make it to the majority of the public.
  • dark knight, most overrated film of all time
  • bonchampion
yes, thank you, a lot of people love this movie, there are other movies out there, it's been said, move on.
  • im not saying it isn't an entertaining movie, but really, if heath ledger hadn't have died it would not have even half as many fans
  • jon
    fuck you
  • ayejayem
    it's true.
  • zebrat
    so true.
  • lauren
i completely agree. it was a kickass action movie, but should not have made the top 15
  • Joe
Much less #1. I can list plenty of movies deserving that spot (Children of Men, for one)
  • Bob
Thats your opinions, but obviously not that of the majority. SO... buzz off.
  • ptek
    Pistol Opera.

    Dancer in the Dark.

Toy Story 2 should beat WALL-E.

And this one's an uphill battle with most people, but I firmly believe Speed Racer to be one of the most revolutionary digital pictures yet made.
  • International_J
Toy Story 2 was made in '99
  • ptek
    Good call.
  • bonchampion
Speed Racer had a lot going for it. It was an honest adaptation of the cartoon, with amazing visuals, and a compelling story that didn't take itself too seriously, but it definitely had its faults. Almost every movie on that list, in my opinion, is nearly flawless.

And I agree about Toy Story 2. In today's era of Pixar doing super creative and risky story-telling, their best and most down to earth story gets forgotten.
  • dogish86
    Wall-E's a masterpiece.
    You're silly.
  • ptek
Gotta say I had a hard time gettin' on the WALL-E bandwagon. I admit that the first 20 minutes of the film WAS indeed a masterpiece of silent cinema, but after the first act ended and conflict was introduced, the rest of the movie played out as predictably as it possibly could. That along with the terrible animation on the human characters and the beat-you-over-the-head environmentalist message was just too much.

In the end I felt WALL-E was treating its audience like they were stupid, and asking for praise because it was pretty to look at.
  • Justin Craig
    Totally agree with you.
  • Bob
    I love you ptek.
  • ZiM
Speed Racer really was a great movie. Especially if you watch the source material.
  • Browncoat1138
Thank you, def. in my top 10 of last year.
  • zebrat
yes, i love Speed Racer too. it's a frikken gem of a movie. and it's nice to see more positive comments toward it lately. mark my words, Speed Racer will live on to be a classic someday.
