Will Disney Unveil Star Tours 2.0 at D23 Expo?

Star Tours

In May we wrote about top secret reshoots in Hollywood, which involved Boba Fett, Admiral Ackbar, Tusken Raiders, Jawas, and even C3PO himself Anthony Daniels. Could the big revamp of Disney’s Star Tours, a ride which hasn’t been updated since it opened in 1987, finally be coming soon? And will Disney unveil plans for the new ride at D23 Expo?

In mid-September, Disney is holding the D23 Expo, an “ultimate fan experience” convention which will feature sneak peeks at the future of both Disney’s films and theme parks. And the official website mentioned that George Lucas’ Star Wars would have a presence at the convention, which got quite a few Star Wars fans excited. Enough that Disney released an official statement:

“In response to inquiries from Star Wars fan sites about Storm Troopers at the D23 Expo, D23 issues the following statement: “We were contacted by the Galactic Empire and have been advised that Imperial dignitaries will be attending Disney’s D23 Expo,” said Steven Clark, head of D23. “As a result, a legion of Storm Troopers from the 501st Battalion will be patrolling the Anaheim Convention Center on Saturday, September 12.”

And Saturday September 12th also happens to be the same day that Jay Rasulo, Head of Disney Parks and Resorts will be speaking. Will there be a Star Tours 2.0 announcement? Or will the guests be treated to one of those lame dance offs from Disney’s Star Wars weekends? Lets hope not. Thanks to /Film reader Jaynbait and BluSkyDisney for the tip.

  • That Sounds interesting, I agree with you. Please keep at your good work, I would come back often.
  • I have a feeling that if (IF) the Star Tours update is announced at the Expo, it may very well be one of many that are made that weekend.

Gets me to start wondering if the D23 Expo will serve as a platform for these types of announcements directly to fans, much like Apple and other companies do. I for one sure hope so!

I'm going to Disney World in November 2009, so I really hope that it will be open by then! I'm really glad they are doing 3D without glasses! It is about time that they realized that 3D without glasses is the only way 3D can continue and be successful! There are too many people who can't see 3D in the first place.

Sorry to disappoint, but if it is announced then you're looking at 2011, not 2009. It takes a long time for them to do these things. It's already known that there will be nothing new attraction-wise for Disneyland on its 55th next year. So the first it would be done is 2000. And we're talking about Disneyland not Disney World. When this was in discussions it was rejected by the bean counters at WDW and that's one of the reasons it was delayed. They were working with Tokyo Disneyland to try and partner so as to subsidize the cost. But if you want to see it you'd better come to Anaheim not Orlando and it better be 2011 not 2009.

But that doesn't mean it won't eventually come to Florida, just not in the time-line you're looking at.

    awwwww :(
  • Would love to see an updated STAR TOURS, the existing one is horribly dated (ironic, given that far older rides like Pirates and The Haunted Mansion still feel fresh.)
Personally though, I'd rather they ditched the 'motion control' style of 1.0 and go the same way as the Indiana Jones ride (my favorite Disney attraction.) Either that, or use an IMAX screen like The Simpsons ride at Universal Studios, which is pretty amazing.
  • yikes.. am I wrong to be concerned with George Lucas's recent and continued history of fuck-up-ery, especially pertaining to the things we hold dear... I was just at disneyland, and while hokey, I would certainly hate to lose the classic feel (read, association with the first 3 movies ONLY), not to mention the Paul Reubens voice acting... of course I doubt Ahmed Best is busy...

    No Thanks!

I went to Star Tours like a month ago, when I left the attraction I was like 'Man, this is so old, why don't they remake this?'
I'm looking forward for the new version

I did Star Tours this past May after not visiting Disney World for 18 years. The effects and film quality are woefully out-of-date. The image quality on your PlayStation far exceeds this ride. I'm surprised it took them so long.
  • I'd make a trip to Disneyland just to ride a new Star Tours. That was the best ride, even if it did take two hours of standing in line.

    RE: the YouTube video

If my life ever gets so low that I have to perform in the HyperSpace Hoopla Dance-Off just to make ends meet, please feel free to blow my friggin' brains out. Really, put me down like a rabid dog.

How are we supposed to tell the official 501st Stormtroopers apart from the thousands of fanboy Stormtroopers? I feel for the poor bastards doing security for this thing.
  • A new Star Tours? That might be enough reason for me to go to Disney next year. That's my absolute favorite attraction in DisneyWorld
