Editor’s Note: Director Neill Blomkamp also told EW, “I would do anything to go back to the world of District 9 again. Or District 10.”

Promoting District 9 last week, Neill Blomkamp gave an interview to Fangoria Radio and the key quotes are now up on the main Fangoria site. Besides doing their duties as gorehounds and asking the director if he’d like to make a straight-up horror film (he said he would!) they also discussed the inevitable: a sequel to his surprise-success alien apartheid satire.

I’d love to make a sequel, because it’s so creatively rewarding to me; there’s just something about [the story]. It’s my background mixed with the science fiction that I loved.

As is well documented, District 9 is already a sequel of sorts, to Blomkamp’s short film Alive in Joburg. I don’t think we need to hope too hard he doesn’t just run himself into a rut of similar hand-held, pseudo documentary alien pictures. He must be all too aware of the need to branch out and surprise us (again) next time.

If - or more accurately, I feel, when - a District 9 follow-up does gets the flag however, we can definitely expect breakout star (breakout star in the geekosphere, anyhow) Sharlto Copley to make a return appearance:

I’d really like to go back to the world of District 9—which, without Sharlto’s character, would be a very different kind of movie. So I think automatically the two of us will be reunited again, should the public decide that this film is something they want to see and it’s successful.

I think the last two clauses have been quite clearly settled in the intervening days. If this isn’t a success then I don’t know what it. I’m curious as to how many punters think that Peter Jackson directed the film, though. I certainly still meet people who think Guillermo del Toro directed The Orphanage or Steven Spielberg directed Gremlins.

Blomkamp’s intended next picture is not the sequel, but something still rooted in the same genre:

I’ve actually got an idea now for the next film I want to do, which is [another] science fiction movie.

And that’s it? What a tease. Sure bet he’s not talking Halo, though.

i would love a part two

but if it never came.....we have a stellar stand alone tale

I'm kind of torn about this news. As much as I love District 9 I'm not sure if I would like to see a sequel unless it can absolutely surpass what this film has already accomplished. I'm sure, though, that if a sequel is made he will have a lor more resources (CASH) to work with.

I'm excited for his next project.
  • Chad
I meant to say a "lot".
  • I disagree with the cash part. The amount of resources he had for D9, 30 million, was plenty. I have to think the more money that gets fed to a project, the less creative it gets. You want to stretch every penny into making the film look and feel immersive as possible. Yes, I know the more CGI, props, actors (designers, modelers, mo-cap, render farms, etc) the price goes up.

This of course doesn't hold true to some films/directors out there, I know. If D10 were to get a budget of $100m, I think that would be plenty for Neill and his crew to pull off an epic sequel.
  • TravisM
I agree with LoganR. Just look what happened to George Lucas and Spielberg (who is still the better of the two). A sequal would be nice, but doing it just because it was popular? Isn't that the corporate way these days? How often has that worked?
  • Yoji
I'd like to see what he can do with a different story.
  • Kyle C.
Great, Bring on District 10!!! I do think he should do something new next, but after that he should return to that world, it's just too real and alive not to. Sharlto Copley needs to come back as well. I wonder if he'll be like a Klaatu figure in the next one, trying to decide whether or not humans should be allowed to live with their destructive ways.
  • capawesome
I'm behind Blomkamp and whatever he wants to do. Even a sequel for District 9

    :D
  • William_Wright
I would love an Aliens type District 10
  • shadow
This is bad news, he has gone on record saying he did'nt plan on a sequel so this is just giving into the fans. He needs to get away from that.
  • mbellerbrock
When did he say that? I don't remember reading anything of that sort.
  • freemachine
Well, Chris did promise Wikus "3 years". I expect the film would involve Chris coming back to Earth, though not for some epic battle between humans and prawns, because we'd get our ass handed to us. I would hope it would be set around diplomatic relations between our races, yet reveal more mysteries about the aliens, their past, and their technology. The MNU would still present a tremendous threat, as would anyone with xenophobic tendencies.

My only real concern is would they try to limit the budget to under $35 mil, which I'd prefer, or would they double it and try to compete with some of the heavy hitters that come out in spring. I think that working within that budget forced them to use every resource possible, such as the incredible acting by an unknown lead. Just think how crappy this film would have been if it was directed by Michael Bay and featured Tom Cruise...BARF!

Anyway, I totally love this move, and while I'd like to see more, I'm content with one film.
  • Scruffmcgruff
in all fairness, both Transformers and District 9 feature urinating aliens.
  • IsaacRosales
In all fairness, there were completely different contexts in said scenes. That's like saying that Terminator 3 and 2 are comparable because, "in all fairness, both T3 and T2 feature a robot protecting a pair of humans from another robot."
  • Scruffmcgruff
just a joke... clearly the district 9 peeing alien made sense in the context of the scene while the transformers alien peeing oil was in the top 10 most moronic scenes in history. definitely not comparing the 2 movies- district 9 is in my top 5 scifi movies EVER.
  • or maybe because one is the sequel to the other?
  • eddymovies
    Don't do it!
  • AlanPlacko
i would love to see a sequel, but i would hate to see it be turned into a $100mil+ movie nightmare. I love the feel of a lower budget movie sometimes.... anyone else?
  • turok1134
District 9 felt anything but low-budget. Hell, if I didn't already know the budget I would have guessed it was a 80 million dollar movie.
  • Craigasorusrex
Bring it on. I absolutely loved District 9 its probably my favorite of 09 so far.

Everything about it. Let it be the allegories or the actual sci fi story to be told (much was left for the audience to imply).

Neill Blomkamp proved himself to be a very capable director. If he has an entire world envisioned with the prawns, Christopher, Wikus and Chris son. I'm all up for it.

By the way the quality wouldn't worsen if the budget got bigger they would only improve (and they were already damn good). Part of the reason why the CGI looked so great was because Neill started working for a sfx company (Sharlto Copley co owned this company) in South Africa at the age of 14.

With a bigger budget Neill could work wonders due to his great ability to render and blend CGI with real environments.

So excited for all his films. :)
  • LOL COREY
How the fuck can you do a sequel without the Goddamn Sweetie Man?!
  • the_hollywood_sign
There is much more to be told in Wikus' hero arc. Really, with a full story told, he could go from goofy ass jerk to saving the world. It would be beautiful to see. He's in position to be the fulcrum of communication between the races, with anyone and everyone wanting his loyalty.

I'd guess that the biotech has some breakthroughs and the equal weapons are developed. What might happen?

even doubling the budget would be modest. 75 million and a possible SF classic.
  • shameless
the film would definitely need a bigger budget, if only to get the copley to return. they likely paid him very little as a lead in a film and he would certainly require a larger amount for a second.

that being said, i would love to see a sequel. i would love to see different types of alien weaponry as well as more of their homeworld, which would certainly require more cg.
  • thanxxxxx nice movie
  • Michael_C
My trust in Blomkamp outweighs my trepidation about a District 9 sequel, so I'm on board.
  • I'd like to see a District 10, but I'd prefer to see Mr Blomkamp expand on the world he created for his short "Yellow".
  • I haven't seen DISTRICT 9 since I live in Germany... Aaaargh... But please... No sequel... Go with SOMETHING FRESH or visit HALO again !!!
  • overwatch
I hope he doesn't do a sequel ever. I would however love him to reteam with Sharlto.
  • sequel please! changing the narrative structure could work, its as if 9 set up the world and now we can truly explore the story with the alien returning 3 years later to salvage his people and save the main dude.
  • MBFilms
This movie was so good I don't know about having a sequel. It's certainly left open but I like the mystery of the whole thing
  • I hope he does make another movie before District 10. I think it would be one of the greatest things ever if District 10 was released on August 14, 2012.
  • SC
I think District 9 is enough to stand by itself without risking a let down with another sequel. If they do come out with a sequel, it needs to be just as groundbreaking, if not more, than its predecessor.
  • District 9 : "The Prawn Identity" - District 10 : "The Prawn Supremacy"

I think Christopher will return in 3 years - as promised - to fix Wikus.
  • District 9 : "The Prawn Identity" - District 10 : "The Prawn Supremacy"

    VERY funny!
  • Bring back the Prawns! I loved this movie and Sharlto Copley was a revelation.
  • I could see this being cool;(SPOILERS)Christopher returns...but he brings a fucking invasion! We all saw how mad he was when he stumbled upon the Prawn Experimentation Room, right?
  • Actually the advertising clearly states "Peter Jackson Presents a Film by Neill Blomkamp," so I don't think there would be TOO much confusion.

However, I do agree that there are many films out there that are labeled "So and so Presents," without saying what their role in the film is (in some cases, it's just the individual promoting the film).

However, I believe District 9 was produced/financed entirely by Jackson and then Tristar distributed it, so the "Peter Jackson Presents" is really the truth.
  • I aactually don't hope for a sequel just because it would be unnecisary and also very difficult to write.

This first movie was good but a sequel would just be one big circle jerk which would watter down the whole experience.
  • qaisar
Please make the sequel i watched the film today and was on edge the whole time it was absolutely brilliant, favourite film of the year by far, it was really really interesting the plot was excellent. What i loved was how we as the audience took a hatred towards the prawns and then when copey is mutating it automatically changes and you're on the prawns side and what i loved about it most was the friendship between christopher johnson and wikus that was a touching part of the film big big fan of this please please make the sequel and please let CJ return to help wikus, i rally hope there is a sequel i would be gutted if there wasn't. ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT FILM IM GOING TO WATCH IT AGAIN :D
  • qaisar
I agree with Andrew Buckley on chris returning and saving his fellow prawns and the Wikus, i reiterate again please please please do a sequel
  • TravisM
Great movie, but for sci-fi geeks like myself this is typical fare. We read these kinds of stories all the time, but rarely get to see them on the big screen. We need hollywood to be brave enough to do more sci-fi like this, and less like the new Star Wars and the great-but-still-safe Star Trek. Keep pushing the envelope more (and MORE!!). Sci-fi geeks like to be challenged as well as entertained. We like mind bending stories, it's where we live.
