whiplash iron man 2

We all know by now that the first officially released photo of Mickey Rourke as Whiplash in Iron Man 2 is probably only the villain’s Mark I suit. At Comic-Con, we got a chance to see Rourke in action at the racetrack, but nothing more than that. What will the big screen version of Whiplash really look like?

Marko Djurdjevic created a new concept design for the Whiplash character for the upcoming Marvel Comics four issue miniseries Iron Man vs. Whiplash. Marvel.com has released the first image of the new character design. For a larger look at Whiplash’s new design, hit the jump. Could this design hint at what we might possibly expect on the big screen come May 2010?

Interesting. Its a very cool design yet it lacks a lot of practicality, especially if he is going against Tony who has a full covering prosthetic.

Not even sure it will be similar to its movie counterpart. Maybe it'll be completely different.

    ^^^ speakin truth

that was my first thought as well... Tony could kill him easily in that... too much exposed flesh. It is only Mark II tho so who knows? There may be a Mark III that we haven't seen yet
  • yes11
It also lacks the tattoos of Rourke's incarnation.

If at some point Tony forgets that he could fly out of the reach of those stupid whips and vaporize "Whiplash," I am going to be very upset.
  • AnthorianRace
That wouldn't really work... to beat Whiplash, Tony has to get in close. If he flies away and tries to attack him that way, well 3 things could happen.
    1. Whiplash could just destroy anything Tony sends at him.
    2. Whiplash would just be able to move away easier.
    3. Remember Iron Man primarily uses repulsor technology. They AREN'T lasers. It's a physical ball of energy. Meaning they don't melt things or vaporize things. It's like a punch that explodes on contact. Since I'm guessing Whiplash is using the exact same technology, they're gonna be preven even.
  • I wonder if they'll explain all that in the film? I bet they will especially whenever they first fight. Tony will fly high above and try that stuff and get proven wrong on his theory on how to beat Whiplash.
  • AnthorianRace
Especially with Jarvis talking to him. It would work if it was used as comedy.
  • Yeah I guess it would especially since that's the tone of the first film. It would be crazy if they went all dark and stuff with the sequel.
  • pat
remember in the first movie where he SHOT about 5+ terrorists at once? Those weren't repulsors. Or when he blew up the tank with the mini-missle
  • mchops
    shit is decent!
  • It's Vega from Street Fighter II meets Jason from Jason X. Ehh...
  • The_Kid
Looks decent I guess, but I couldn't see this working on screen, maybe but it could be pretty cool.

  • I could see it working in an Anime. Maybe it's possible it's going to be part of the new Iron Man anime.
  • JoeGrizzly
True about that vega and jason x, but it looks alright
  • dagreenman18
    Certainly an improvement.

Something i wanted to ask for a long time: What about Mandarin? Didn't they make an introduction for him in the first film?
  • starscream9289
The terrorist that kidnaped Tony in the first film had several rings in his fingers that he caressed constantly. Possible Mandarin reference?
  • AnthorianRace
Raza is supposed to either give his rings to the real Mandarin or he actually is the Mandarin. If he is... then he'll need to grow some cool facial hair. Also, did anyone catch the Gengis Khan reference, i mean isn't the Mandarin a direct descendent of his?
  • You guys know this is a film, right?
  • mchops
I don't think it would make sense if his whole body was not covered. IM would tear him apart if that was the case.
  • Palmer
That's a badly designed suit. I mean a bare shoulder? Talk about a weak spot.
  • Have you not seen the first image of Whiplash at the top of this article? The one from the film is a badly designed suit with a bare torso and arms. At least the comic book version has some armor.
  • Kyle C.
Pretty cool looking, I have one fundamental problem with this character though. If those whips are supposed to be so powerful, how the hell could someone swing'em around without slicing off their own leg, arm or head. Whiplash must be one talented SOB.
  • Do you honestly hear of people swinging normal whips and hitting themselves in the leg arm or head? If they were that untalented with whips, they shouldn't be handling them.
  • John
Notice how half of him is covered in more parts of armor (his left thigh, upper arm and shoulder). Maybe there is more to it. Certainly if the armor on his left is mirrored and added to the right side, you have practically a full suit of armor. Maybe the armor comes off in pieces (kinda like the new Batsuit) and maybe he is fully covered at the beginning.

This does two things. First, negatively, it makes it what they didn't want which would be essentially man in armor vs. man in armor.

But second, which is cool and they did it in Iron Man 2, it makes it so clearly they will get damaged and maybe pieces of the suit gets destroyed (kinda like how his suit got damaged by the end of Iron Man)
  • looks kinda lame. And why does he only have one shoulder armor?
  • and one armor on his thigh also... lame!
  • AnthorianRace
They should've done a redesign of the armor used in Iron Man: Ironed Adventures. That was a cool suit.

Me the other day I got the same question on my blog.
  • shameless
his boots look like they could give him flight like iron man, just because they adopted the russian origin of crimson dynamo doesn't mean thats all they took from him. also, remember that mickey rourke said that his suit weighed 23 lbs and has a lot of his skin exposed along with russian tattoos...
  • This is confirmed. Marvel just released previews of their upcoming November books, and it features an in-continuity Iron Man 2 tie-in entitled "IRON MAN VS. WHIPLASH" which has the concept suit on the cover.

Looks cool, but a little too anime mecha for me to even picture in the movie.
  • wazuu
Im glad everyone agrees that having skin exposed is a "dumb move" on Whiplashes part.
