20th Century Fox has sent over an extremely high resolution digital file of the first photo from James Cameron’s Avatar, large enough to be your new computer desktop wallpaper. And speaking of computer desktop wallpaper, today we came across an awesome 1920 x 1200 TRON Legacy computer rendered lightcycle image created by UK artist Simon Page, perfect for your desktop background. While it might not be an official Walt Disney Pictures release, it looks good enough to me (it currently sits as the backdrop on my Mac Book Pro). Check out both after the jump.

It seems like the new Tron Legacy VFX test teaser trailer has inspired a couple different artist pros from around the world. Last week we featured a kick-ass fan created poster by James White.

As for Avatar Day, the online ticketing process was a complete mess, consisting mostly of server error pages and frustrated sci-fi fans. The official Avatar Twitter page, @officialavatar, tweeted this notice: “Due to the overwhelming response for tickets to the Avatar event on 8/21, our servers have crashed. We will update you as soon as possible!” Were any of you out there able to get tickets?

  • I got tickets. If you were on right at the time they went live, you would have been able to get them.

I got tickets as late as this morning in Nashville.

I got one for Metreon SF at 6:00

but it took like 2-3 hours of seeing crash page

    I got tickets!! 2 for Jordan's Furniture IMAX, Reading, MA 6:30pm :D

One thing that concerns me though is the fact that I registered and haven't gotten a confirmation e-mail yet. So I tried registering again and it says that I am already registered. If I don't get a confirmation e-mail by tomorrow, I am going to try calling the theater up.

    From the Avatar twitter:

Confirmation emails for 8/21 will not arrive immediately, it may take a few hours to get to your inbox. #Avatar

i got tickets. took me an hour and a half, but I got them. Definitely worth the wait

The entire state of Arkansas is not able to take part in the Avatar festivities. I know it's easy to make jokes, but we do in fact have 3D AND IMAX screens. Yes, we also have shoes.
  • braindead360
Yeah, I can honestly say that I was extremely pissed that they skipped over us completely. Both my friend and I were checking the site all day waiting for the servers to get fixed, only to find our state had been completely overlooked. I guess whoever is in charge at the Chenal 9 IMAX just couldn't stand to give up a showing of Harry Potter. sigh* Sometimes I really hate living here. Oh, and I also have shoes. LOL

so all the links on the page just go straight to regal cinemas page, which doesn't have any info about avatar day. can someone help me out here?
  • manish
    mader cudar
  • Yes, something is wrong with the Regal Cinema links. Click on a different theater link and then when you get to the RSVP page, look for a link that says "other showings" underneath the form.

That's what I did and I just got my e-mail confirmations.
  • Wiimo
Did you figure it out? If not, what state are you in?
  • I think I got some tickets, I guess. Shitstorm of reloading, and then to have a 404 error after completing the registration form. More reloading until I got the menu screen again, only to be told that I HAD tickets already. Uhm, okay good.

    Still no confirmation email.
  • Wiimo
Something must be wrong with the confirmation email thing. Took me like 3 hours to get one and now my inbox is being spammed with the same confirmation email & code. As of this comment, they have sent me 11 confirmation emails which are all identical. o.O
  • plagueoftruth
Just got my tickets about a half an hour ago. No confirmation email but I'm relieved to hear from the person above who said it took a couple hours but they got it.
Avatar and Inglourious Basterds on one day?! W00t!
  • Wiimo
Yeah I should clarify that I first filled out the form around 3:30 EST and just got the email recently (6:15 EST). So it took quite awhile, but I'm guessing things will go smoother now that the site is back up and running.
  • Wiimo
The site seems to be working now. I got 2 tickets for a theater in Baltimore and got the confirmation email. A bunch of showings in Cali are already "sold out." Wouldn't have known about it without /Film's Comic-Con coverage, thanks guys! :D
  • plagueoftruth
I second that, btw. Thanks slashfilm, I wouldn't have known about this if not for you.
  • mastenator
I got a confirmation email earlier for Roseville in Minnesota....the weird thing is just a few minutes ago I looked at the ticketing page and it had the number of seats remaining listed for each theater...I tried to post the link to a friend and when I refreshed the 'seat remaining' numbers are gone.
  • plagueoftruth
I saw that too. Oh well, I'm just happy to have a spot.
  • I got in and reserved tickets (I hope). No confirmation e-mail yet.

The whole thing was a complete clusterf-ck. When I finally got to the list of theaters, I couldn't select the one I wanted, Regal Cinema in Deer Park. When I clicked on it it took me to the Regal Cinema web page instead of the RSVP page.

I had to click on a link for a different theater and there was a link to other showings which I was able to click on and navigate to my preferred location.

Now I just hope that everything went though. I'm hoping to make it a double feature that day, the Avatar preview and then a showing of Inglorious Basterds.
  • Snorthog
FTW! I'm hopefully double featuring the Avatar Preview and G.I. Joe!
  • Poland626
    I got 2 tickets and a confirmation email! :D
  • DanC
I got my confirmation email! Be patient, it took a couple hours. Also, while I was waiting I decided to call my local AMC where it was playing and complain, just in case I didnt get the confirmation, I thought I might as well get some free movie tickets! I put in a report through upper management, I suggest everyone else do the same.
  • jrice73
Well, after three hours I finally got the page with the list of cinemas showing the preview. Of course no theatre in St. Louis was showing it but two theatres in Independence, MO were. I tried clicking on them to get them to come up since I have friends who live in that area but of course the site went down again. That's it for me. Congratulations to those who got them. But a TOTAL CLUSTERFUCK again for Fox which should not really surprise anyone. This falls firmly on Cameron and Fox's shoulders. You just don't announce something like this and then don't put any effort in to making it work. We should have all known that when this was announced at Comic-Con a month ago, it would be a total mess. I recommend to anyone who didn't get tickets to go to the theatre anyway and see if there are seats available. Well, four months isn't that long to wait. I just hope my one lone IMAX theatre in St. Louis (and its a faux IMAX too) actually shows AVATAR on December, 18 and not Zemeckis' CHRISTMAS CAROL. That would once again be a clusterfuck...
  • egyptnation
both movies will probably play at your imax. christmas is due nov. 6 so that's a whole 6 weeks before avatar.
  • Snorthog
Whew. I thought I was the only one who hadn't gotten an email yet! Thank goodness!
  • egyptnation
i'm starting to think that e-mails will start going out tues. night or wed., after everyone has had a chance to get their tickets, considering how long it took because of all the errors everyone was getting.
  • egyptnation
montreal, here. after about an hour of constant refreshing got tix to the fri. show. still no e-mail though.
  • deadendkid
    WOW. TRON...Quality Indeed.
  • jank

  • jam2712

  • GregoryV
