At noon on Monday, 20th Century Fox launched their free ticket registration for Avatar Day, a special nationwide preview of 15-minutes of James Cameron’s Avatar. But instead of an rsvp confirmation, many film fanatics were greeted to a reoccurring server error message. Somehow Fox didn’t anticipate the huge demand, and the server crashes, crashed, and crashed again.

Some people did get through but haven’t received their confirmation emails. The Avatar twitter account assures us that confirmation emails will not arrive immediately, but may take a few hours to get to your inbox. I’ve talked to a few people who got through around 12:30/12:45 who are just now receiving their e-mail confirmations four hours later.

Good news for those who were unable to get through earlier today. The AvatarMovie.com ticket reservation page is back online, and most everyone I’ve talked to has been able to get through and rsvp to one of the special screenings. So if you missed out earlier in the day, you might want to try again right now while seats are still available.

The original press release follows:

LOS ANGELES, August 17, 2009 – Twentieth Century Fox announced today additional information about its global, history-making AVATAR DAY event when, on August 21, the world will get its first look at director James Cameron’s motion picture epic AVATAR. In this unprecedented experience, the studio and Cameron debut the film’s trailer everywhere, while select cinemas and IMAX® theaters will screen select scenes in 3-D, prepared by the renowned filmmaker.

The worldwide trailer launch will be presented in all formats, including IMAX® 3-D, IMAX® 2-D, digital 3-D, digital 2-D, and 35mm 2-D. The trailer will also be available online.

The extended look at AVATAR will unspool for two showings only on the evening of August 21. The U.S. showings will be in select IMAX® 3-D theaters, and international unveilings will be in select digital 3-D and IMAX® 3-D theaters. Information on reserving tickets for these very limited showings will be available beginning August 17, 3:00pm EDT (noon PDT), at avatarmovie.com.

In addition on the 21st, Fox will take the wraps off its special “3-D”/lenticular one-sheet posters for the film, Ubisoft® will unveil the trailer for their videogame James Cameron’s Avatar: The Game, and Mattel will reveal the action figures for the film’s Avatar and alien Na’vi characters.

AVATAR takes us to a spectacular new world beyond our imagination, where a reluctant hero embarks on a journey of redemption, discovery and unexpected love, as he leads a heroic battle to save a civilization. The film was first conceived by Cameron 14 years ago, when the means to realize his vision did not yet exist. Now, after four years of actual production work, AVATAR delivers a fully immersive cinematic experience of a new kind, where the revolutionary technology invented to make the film, disappears into the emotion of the characters and the sweep of the story.

AVATAR opens in theaters everywhere December 18, 2009.

Enjoy your "revolutionary 300 $ furry porn cartoon"
  • all that refreshing and actually getting to the forms just to find no shows in iowa. let me down.
  • Marco
Eff Fox. How hard was it to give us the locations first so that we don't anticipate the day we get our tickets for no reason. I guess the smaller cities weren't really expecting it. I thought Vancouver was big enough to get a chance but nope.
  • egyptnation
    wow, no vancouver? that sucks.
  • kevin
    Yea, NO VANCOUVER

one of the biggest cities in Canada like WTF Fox

im really disappointed in this :(
  • boomboxdeluxe
I know. I'm soooooo disapointed. Screw Calgary. Those bastards. How can try host the frickin olympics and not have one theatre available for this. Stupid.
  • Snorthog
Hey! Calgary guy here, and I TOO, was suprised that they snubed B.C.
  • AnthorianRace
wasn't the ticket promotion only for US cities?
  • avermonter
Went to the site at 7:45 pm EST, just to rubberneck, and
was able to signup for 4 tickets to Albany, NY. And got email confirmation
    10 minutes later.
  • I was able to register for my tickets at about 12:05 pst but still have not received email confirmation.

    :(
    :(
  • kamera88
I'm on the same boat. After nearly seven hours I still havent reveived the comfirmation email.
  • Brently986
I'm in the same boat as you guys. Still no confirmation e-mail. I wonder what's up?
  • jank
yeah i supposedly got them for citywalk, los angeles (i refuse to see it in liemax) but 4 hours later still no confirmation. anyone else going to this one?
  • I completely forgot the ticket sign-ups were going live today until about two hours ago. I rushed over to the site and RSVP'd for two tix here in Colorado.. just got my confirmation email about twenty minutes ago. This mixture of eager anticipation and relief I'm feeling is great.. I can't wait for Friday! Anyone else going to a Colorado showing?
  • Also meant to add I got my tix confirmations about 1.5 hours after the fact.
  • Gil Brooks
Got my confirmation! For two different times! :D
  • REAL6
    Same here. Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee :)
  • EvilDeadAsh
does anybody know if these showings have been overbooked to ensure a full house, or does my confirmation actually guarantee me two seats?
  • syms
HILARIOUS that this "world" event is restricted to the USA and CANADA. Way to condescend FOX!!!!
  • woodgab
It is not restricted. We have it in Budapest
  • Yeah. Only in the page is restricted. You should check with your local cinemas to verify screening times and ticket reservation. We have it in Mexico and the dynamics were a little different, but it's still happening.
  • Got my tickets and am excited. It had better blow my mind!
  • Sheep
Is there another list or does the world only consist of Canada and USA?
  • Snorthog
Got my Tickets around 2:30 MST, and STILL Haven't gotten a confirmation email. It's now Seven!
  • I registered at 7pm EST and got tickets to two consecutive showings (one for myself at 6pm and one for a friend at 7pm. Sadly we can't both go at the same time due to scheduling conflicts.)
  • lidlesseye
My sister and I were shut out for the first half hour due to bottle-necking but managed to snag 4 tickets for Irvine at 6. I just don't know if the theater overbooked and is planning on overflow or not. If NCM is in charge of the event then chances are it's overbooked (they ALWAYS do that), sometimes the studio gives the theater a chance to sell seats as well. (our theater does that with special screenings)
  • Wiimo
I'm wondering the same thing. In another post, someone mentioned that the site used to say how many seats were remaining for each screening, but it was removed later. I'm still not really sure though.
  • Craigasorusrex
It took an eternity for me to get my tickets. I was waiting way before 12:00 p.m yet as soon as it hit noon the problems started to begin.

Only after an hour had passed was I able to submit my information to receive my code through back alleys (theater links promoting "Avatar day").

What a chaotic scene it was. I finally got my tickets a while back though. So I'm happy that I at least got them.

    Can't wait until the 21st.
  • spencerl
Yeah, Peter, you should've been on the IMDb boards. They were INSANE.

I registered at 12:00 PST. ON THE DOT. I rushed to make sure I got tickets, using the AMC thing. And I didn't get my e-mail until around 730. It sucked, all the waiting, it was painful.

But, now I know that I'm oh so ready for AVATAR DAY.
  • Rockie
the IMAX in Austin TX is lame for not getting this

looks like its the trailer for me
  • IsaacRosales
I know, first Watchmen, and now this! How is it that Harry Potter gets 5 showings a day for the rest of the month, yet they couldn't just cancel one of them on the 21st? Lame Bob Bullock museum, LAME!
  • Rockie
i will admit the dark knight was a special screening at that imax

but this is just a missed opportunity
  • Andrew
Still not quite sure how Huntsville, Alabama's IMAX was ignored... there are so few true IMAX screens that I felt like all of those would get it. Apparently a lot of the fake ones got it instead.
  • okayflint
I got through earlier today but haven't got my confirmations. hmmm
  • A friend is giving me tickets they won online via Twitter. Quite impressed. Especially after reading what a f*ck-up this process must have been.
  • woboy
Has anyone in Canada gotten their confirmation email yet? Registered at 1:00ish today, and still haven't gotten it.. Hmm...
  • just got mine for Toronto- hang in there.
  • LP
I register at around 6ish and just got the email now. So awesome!
  • thankyoufor
    I GOTS ME TICKETS YAY

I got a couple extra tickets for my buddies, but when I got the email confirmation it said that you would need a photo ID along with the printout of the email. I thought I'd be able to give the two tickets to my two friends, but now I'm wondering if I'm gonna have to tell one of them that he can't go because I have to be one of the ticket-holders. I don't mind seeing it twice, but I'd rather both of my friends be able to go instead. Any suggestions?
  • REAL6
Usually they just say that but never ever check your ID. They just take the paper you print tickets out on. But this is a different event so yeah they might look. RISK IT!!!
  • Anonymous
I think I will, because I don't want to deal with one friend being pissed that he didn't get to see the trailer. I wonder if scalpers had thought about this possibility.
  • Snorthog
    JUST recieved my ticket! Whoot!
  • wrongturn687
think the most impressive thing about this is the fact that this movie has had no real publicity besides the internet. I mean we were here months ago talking about the low buzz from Avatar and that it was in major jeopardy because Fox was doing no promotion and was keeping everything a secret. I mean the most we know so far from Comi-Con is that this stuff is suppose to look amazing an yet we still have no pics or trailers from the movie. This is all basically blind hype and no movie that I have ever seen has generated this much buzz especially something mostly talked about on the internet.
  • JasonSearcy
Wow, barely any Canadian Cities...You do know that there are a bunch of IMAX theaters here right?
  • woboy
They were too busy showing it in over 90 theatres in the US to notice, I guess.
  • Snorthog
I know, right? IMAX was created and launched in Canada too...
  • okayflint
well i finally got my confirmation, and for some reason I got 6 emails
