Quentin Tarantino

Quentin Tarantino has recorded a list of his top 20 favorite films which have been released over the last 17 years. What’s so special about the last 17 years, or the year 1992? That was the year Tarantino became a filmmaker.

Films on Tarantino’s list include Battle Royale, Anything Else, Audition, Blade, Boogie Nights, Dazed & Confused, Dogville, Fight Club, Fridays, The Host, The Insider, Joint Security Area, Lost In Translation, The Matrix, Memories of Murder, Police Story 3, Shaun of the Dead, Speed, Team America, and Unbreakable. It think it’s interesting that Tarantino mentions that The Matrix sequels ruined the mythology, enough to push the first film off the top of his list. Watch the full list after the jump, complete with commentary from Tarantino himself .

Friday! I love it. I love that he said Fight Club, too. I always wondered what he thought of Fight Club.
  • kid66
In the book "Rebels on the Backlot," Tarantino calls Fight Club a "diamond-studded bullet to my brain" (or something to that effect). I also remember reading that P.T. Anderson was deeply disgusted by Fight Club (for the way it deals with cancer, apparently) and walked out after 20 minutes.
  • good list. wasn't he supposed to direct Speed at one point?
  • Derek
Interesting list, the only film on there that I would include in my own Top 20 is "The Insider" which is my second favorite film of all time and Im glad he mentioned it.
  • Yeah, mine too. I'm quite surprised he likes it.
  • I would say Unbreakable would be one of my favorites of the past 17 as well, if it weren't for the last 5 minutes. The ending just seemed incredibly forced and unnecessary.
  • rockinrors
I agree, the text that flashed on the screen was unnecessary, M. Night should've made it go for another 15mins.
  • Hi_there
Wasn't there also suppose to be a trilogy made out of it? The text on the screen kinda killed it but I still remember Night talking about making others.
  • RainMan
You know why? Because of the kids, David! They called me Mr. Glass. Barf.
  • /filmer
A lot of good movies on there, but I wanted to say I'm happy to see Unbreakable on the list. M. Night Shyamalan get's a lot of shit nowadays but Unbreakable is a really great film and one of the best superhero movies ever made.
  • alexbp
if these are his favs, interesting that he avoided best pic winners..unless he did that on purpose. yea i think thats what he did....gotta bookmark some of these movies!
  • Name
    YES! HE SAID SHAMA-LAMA-DING-DONG!!

    SUCK IT DEVENDRA!!!
  • Swarley
I've been referring to M. Night as that for years so that made me laugh out loud.
  • Swarley
I've been referring to M. Night as that for years so hearing Tarantino say that made me laugh out loud.
  • jonbrion
Which "Blade" is he talking about? It's not the Wesley Snipes one
  • I believe it's the film called "Dao", directed by Hark Tsui. Look it up on IMDb.
  • Dirk Durdin
Yes, it is also called "Dao". I couldn't find it even listed as suck or "The Blade" on Netflix, however I did find it used/new on Amazon.
  • oh the humanity
RE: THE BLADE - what Amazon's got are bootlegs. Warner Bros. owns this film and refuses to release it or part with the rights to it. The won't even crack down on bootleggers, which is why Amazon sells what they do. Dragon Dynasty tried to get Warner Bros. to part with THE BLADE, BLADE OF FURY, and PEDICAB DRIVER, and WB brushed them off cold.

Are there any more of these types of lists? from other actors, directors etc? I enjoyed this. Definitely some I've never seen before that I've added to my Netflix queue.
  • Daniel
Every ten years Sight and Sound has a top ten poll from critics and directors. You can see the 2002 directors poll at: http://www.bfi.org.uk/sightandsound/topten/poll...

    M. Night Shyamalamadingdong rofl.
  • egyptnation
    lol, agreed.
  • He said the same thing about Unbreakable on the Hot Fuzz commentary. Shamalama-ding-dong and everything.

Which reminds me of the admiration I have for the respect filmmakers share with one another
  • Ben
Will he tell us what kind of toilet paper he uses?
Does his vanity have any boundaries?
  • Rehan
    Keanu rules this list :)
  • freemachine
Decent list, though I'd swap out Boogie Nights in favor of Magnolia, or even the Hard Eight. And he forgot Office Space!!!
  • mudywaters
Yeah he should have included Office Space. That movie needs to be remembered.
  • freemachine
He also left out David Mamet. Glenn Garry Glen Ross (1992) was impressive: acting, direction, SCREENPLAY! Well, you can only have so many films in a top whatever list. I'd have a hard time putting one together.
  • authentic.imitation
mamet didn't direct glengarry glen ross. it was james foley. great film, nonetheless.
  • martin
Haha I laughed so hard at M. Night Shyamalamadingdong :D. I have to agree with him on Unbreakable, and many other of his choices. This was great, I wish more directors did something like this.
  • netflix queue updated
  • freemachine
"I always wondered what he thought of Fight Club."

And he never really says, because the first rule of Fight Club....
  • Martyr Shu
Awesome list. Proud to say I've seen a good chunk of those.
  • Poland626
He also recently said he loved Drag Me To Hell and liked Funny People. *shrugs* But thought Hell was the best in the past whole year
  • clubdeadbeat
i love tarantino and was surprised when he mentioned police story 3(supercop) which i love mainly because michelle yeoh i think she is one of the most underrated actress and so glad he mentioned her too
  • Hi_there
As a really big watcher of foreign films i was completely suprised that he had put so many in his top 20 list. Especially considering he didn't even throw in any really big BS movies (that all the other critics love to love) like Lord of the Rings (it's cool but it's not OMG amazing) or Slumdog Millionaire (it stopped being cool the second everyone else started liking it).

Also Takashi Miike ftw... Somebody needs to lend Tarantino a copy of Save the Green Planet (favorite film ever) or the original Pulse (recently blew my mind), he'd love those.
  • The Great Cambino
Wow, I thought I was the only person who said M. Night Shamalamadingdong.

    Pretty decent list from Quentin.
  • Fir3Wolf
That was a pretty good list and I've seen most of them. I'll have to see the ones that I didn't see that were on his list at some point. Big QT fan and look forward to Inglorious Basterds next week.
  • jimmytheghost
I loved the list. My list would definitely replace The Insider with Heat. Tarantino is a human encyclopedia when it comes to film...but it's interesting he said FridayS instead of FriDAY. Kind of weird coming from him.
  • krsone
he didnt say "fridays" thats just how they typed it
  • jimmytheghost
You are correct. I'm an idiot.
  • krsone
im relatively sure you just made a mistake and are not an idiot....but who knows.....lol
  • The Matrix fell from it's #2 slot because of the sequels, but Speed doesn't drop off the face of the earth despite Speed 2?

Otherwise, those are good picks and I'd have just as hard a time trying to rank them too.
  • FunkyMunkey
I can understand why: Speed is just a good action movie, whereas the Matrix kinda relies on its mythology.

Come to think of it, I can barely remember what happenned in Matrix 2 and 3, so they must have been pretty forgettable.
  • Reniassance_Man
I was gonna say the same thing. Speed 2 is akin to just a crappy sequel and doesn't ruin its predecessor in the same way that Jaws 2-infinity don't ruin the original--they leave the original story in tact.

Matrix 2 and 3 fundamentally alter the ideas seen in 1 and they continue the story (that was left unfinished) in a very unsatisfying way. This is similar to how I felt with Ocean's 12. I loved Ocean's 11 for a long time and then Ocean's 12 completely ruined the well-deserved ending for Ocean'11 and now I just can't see the film in the same way anymore. I try to ignore it, as I'm sure many try to do with Matrix 2 and 3, but just can't.

I'm in the same camp with Matrix 2 and 3. While I didn't hate them, I can't help but still be completely disappointing with how the mythology was tied up.
  • the_hollywood_sign
Yeah, I love seeing Unbreakable get well deserved recognition. Love that film.
  • TheDaftPunk
I love Unbreakable, I have to agree with every point.
  • Michael_C
Ha ha! Supercop! That freaking rocks. If I remember correctly there's a scene in that movie that The Dark Knight inadvertently borrows from like three times.
  • BrendonConnelly
Having heard and read more or less every word this guy has recorded in the last 17 years, I know exactly what blind alleys he chases up on a bunch of these choices. One - he chose a lot of films he likes "the idea of". Two - he allows for "styles" unlike his own, say, as styles he will step back from somewhat and he sort of lets his guard down. He doesn't measure these films by his own standards for his own work. It comes from his respect for the creative freedom of the artist, essentially.

if it sells some copies of Dogville, JSA, Memories of Murder, Police Story 3 and Unbreakable it was more than worth it.
