LOL: Hack Directors Venn Diagram

zz5670fd92

Something that I came across a couple weeks ago and I’ve been meaning to post on the site is this wonderful Hack Directors Venn Diagram from MadAtoms. While I don’t necessarily agree with all of the selections, or reasonings (for example, attempt at style is counter intuitive to the dictionary definition of “hack”), I do think it’s both clever and funny. I’m not sure why Adam Shankman is getting picked on for not being funny when there are better examples of “Isn’t Funny But Makes Comedies” like Tyler Perry. And it is very fitting that Brett Ratner ended up in the center of the diagram.

I'd put Stephen Sommers on that list. He's certainly a talented hack, but a studio hack no less.

edit: didn't mean that as a reply to you, sorry.

It looks like Jason FriedBERG's movies are so hacky no one remembers his name. :)

"And it is very fitting that Brett Ratner ended up in the center of the diagram."

How, exactly? I mean, from that list is the only one that made more than one good movie (Red Dragon, Rush Hour and also, not really a movie but.. the Prison Break's pilot).
  • starrshortgore
I could criticize Michael Bay all day but he is NOT a hack director. None of the other guys on this list compare.
  • It's funny, the guy who has made the most number of watchable films on that diagram is Brett Ratner. Everyone else hasn't even made a good film (and don't say "The Rock was good" because it wasn't).
  • shoothamaguchi
I would argue that McG has made one decent film in We Are Marshall and that Adam Shankman takes films that should be terrible and makes them watchable. Hairspray, A Walk To Remember and even 17 Again.
  • I like Brett Ratner. I like "Red Dragon" (completely underrated) and the first two "Rush Hour" films.
  • tenno
Red Dragon is one of his more competent works but it borrows way too heavily from Michael Mann's Manhunter (THATS underrated) to give him full credit for its style and narrative
  • I thought Adam Shankman's Hairspray was an excellent film, I feel like projects such as The Pacifier were more him trying to pay off his mortgage than him actually working a project he'd want to see.
  • pat
whoever made this is going to be challenged to a boxing match by Uwe Boll....
  • Julz
that retard that made napoleon dynamite and now gentle bronco should join brett ratner in the center.
  • Octoberist
Just because you didn't like it doesn't mean the dude is not talented.
  • Von Bilka
    Napoleon Dynamite is absolutely amazing.
  • "Dan"= Retarded Hillbilly!
This message is to "Dan". ARE YOU SERIOUSLY FUCKING RETARDED!!! HOLY FUCKING SHIT. David Fincher instead of Bay, wow you should shoot yourself in the fucking head. Are you compering Bad boys to Se7en, The island to Fight club, Transformers to Zodiac! why the fuck do you even come to this website when you dont know SHIT about film, you fucking red neck hillbilly cunt! get the fuck out!!!!! Dumb Cunt!
  • Dan
I know more about film than you ever will, and that's precisely why I recognize Fincher as the pretentious hack he is. At least Bay makes shitty films with some mindless eye candy thrown in. Fincher just makes shitty films with piss-poor dialog and flashy MTV-style editing for easily impressed pseudo-intellectuals who like to pretend that the nonsense they're watching is somehow 'deep'. Fincher fans are like the Tool fans of the film world.
  • Octoberist
Man, you're mixing up with personal opinion with the GENERAL consensus of a particular director. Because of that, you're throwing whatever you're saying out the window.

I don't like Tony Scott but no, he DOES NOT belong in the Venn Diagram. Like Fincher or not, his movies are well liked unlike most of the directors in the diagram.
  • Dan, you fail to recognize that Fincher pretty much ushered-in that style with the opening title sequence of Se7en alone. You underestimate what he has achieved, no matter what you think of him.

If, as you state, you truly appreciated film, you'd at least be able to recognize what Fincher brought to film as we know it while not enjoying his work. Apparently not.

This makes you lame. And more of a hack than you claim Fincher to be. See the irony?
  • "Dan"= Retarded Hillbilly! II
Hey dan, you fucking inbread red neck piece of shit, shut the fuck up, before i come to your house and fucking kill you and your fucking inbread family. You are a fucking RETARD who lives in a RETARDED world where Bay is better than Fincher, why dont you take your moms cock out of your mouth and admit that Fincher is the best, you cocksucking, dick loving, two face, red neck hillbilly inbread TWAT!

P.S How often do you fuck your mom and dad, you know...because you're a fucking inbread! FUCK FACE, you down syndrome fuck!

    FINCHER=GOD,
    Dan= Downy
  • Dan
This, readers, is the true intelligence of David Fincher fanboys.
  • I picture Dan wearing a beret, sitting in front of a fireplace and stoking a cat. He has a snifter of port and uses the DVD sleeve of Se7en as a hankerchief.

    Also, he's a virgin.
  • Speaking of pretentious pseudo-intellectuals...
  • Bayisthe devil
Michael Bay made the worst summer blockbuster of all time.

    Enjoy

Adam Shankman doesn't deserve to be on this chart but he certainty shouldn't be replaced by Tyler Perry. I'm not a fan of ether but Tyler Perry is specifically making movies for a certain audience that no one else is catering to while Shankman is attempting to make comedy for the masses. The people that should be up there are Jason Friedberg & Aaron Seltzer the men behind the awful "Scary Movie sequels and that Meet the Spartons movie which some how was even worse.
  • mbellerbrock
    They are on the diagram.
  • shoothamaguchi
Yes Tyler Perry is making films for a specific audience, but they are still awful, unfunny films.
  • krsone
i don't like his movies either.........but they aren't funny to you because you are not the specific audience.......get it?
  • Michael_C
    Yeah, pretty much.
  • turok1134
The Rush Hour movies weren't funny? That's news to me.
  • dagreenman18
Brett Ratner is the battery for the Shitmaker Corp.
  • Dan
They should replace "Michael Bay" with "David Fincher"
  • Can anyone say troll?
  • Von Bilka
    Dan is fat.
  • God, how edgy of you.
  • You clearly haven't got a fucking clue what you're talking about.
  • The blasphemer must be sacrificed...
