Bryan Singer To Reboot Battlestar Galactica?

cylon_mask

Update by Editor Peter Sciretta: Entertainment Weekly has confirmed this report with Universal Pictures — Bryan Singer is signed on to direct a feature film version of Battlestar Galactica, which isn’t expected to be a continuation of the most recent Ron Moore Sci-Fi channel television show, but instead a complete re-imagining of the original 1970’s series. Original report follows below.

According to HitFix, Universal appear to be on the verge of engaging Bryan Singer to produce and also maybe direct a new Battlestar Galactica feature film. Quite a surprise, huh?

You may recall that before the Ron Moore TV series of recent years, Singer was working on a pilot for a reboot of the show himself (some Cylon concept art from their efforts is at the head of this post). That one was halted by in the aftermath of September 11th, 2001 after the Sci-Fi network became sensitive to similarities between the planned plot and real-life tragedy. Would Singer be looking to return to a similar storyline here? I think we can be pretty certain his film won’t be in any way tied into the recent series.

McWeeny is rather skeptical that Singer would sign up to direct a film based upon a premise still so fresh in the public consciousness, but I’m not so doubtful, personally. Would Universal really be the driving force here? I’d expect a conservative cautious studio to take some convincing that there was money here. Or maybe they just want some of that Star Trek dollar?

If Singer cares about this film as much as his history with the Galactica concept would suggest, I’d not at all be surprised to see him take on as much control as possible. So while there’s every chance he won’t direct, I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see it at all. After all, Superman Returns did fly in while Smallville was actually on the air.

This is almost certainly the same project that Peter blogged about in February, possibly a little mutated. At that time it seemed that the new movie would be tied in to the 1978 series and that original producer Glen Larson would be producing and working on the script. I’m guessing Singer was in orbit at that time, just that nobody caught on.

It seems, from where I’m standing, that there’s a core fanbase behind the recent Battlestar Galactica but across the public at large, just a vague awareness. This shouldn’t prevent a new version, of course, but I’d also expect it to create some minor confusion. If nothing else, it could ‘mistakenly’ shift a few copies of the recent DVDs to those who fall for the Singer movie.

One of the useful links in the HitFix article was to an interview from the unofficial Battlestar companion with Tom De Santo, Singer’s co-producer on the aborted 2001 series. He explains just how they would have tied in with the original series and, interestingly enough, it would have been a straight sequel with, for example, Dirk Benedict coming back to reprise the role of Starbuck. Now… they won’t try that again, will they? No… of course not… right?

  • I loved the new Battlestar Galactica, and I hope we've not seen the last of it. But it really has only been just over four months since it went off, and its spinoff has yet to air. Let's give it a little time and let Bryan Singer focus on getting on board the Wolverine sequel.

Four months? Feels like forever and a day since it ended. :(

Anyway, this would me almost the most pointless 'reboot' in history.
  • mangoshakes
i wanna see Singer do something new.
  • bonchampion
yea. a return to usual suspects form.
  • James brock
How about Brian Singer stick with one project and finish it before moving on to something else. X-Men being the prime example. Following up to his films just doesn't work. It ruins the stories and fans are left with a terrible movie. Brian, if you do this, finish any Superman sequels that may be made first.
  • montimer
Singer's Superman is dead. There is more chance of Christopher Reeve rising from the dead than Singer's franchise.
  • DangerousDac
I know it would be hypocritical of me to not want another New Iteration of BSG while I LOVED the current "New" BSG alot more than the original, and even look down on the people who bitch and moan about NuBSG, but the truth is, 25 years separated Original and NuBSG, if they bring it out in two years it wont even have been 25 months since Ronald D Moore's version.

And the truth is, I absolutely adore RDM's version, the characters were the best ive seen on TV, the story was fantastic (imo) and the effects were up there with the best feature films anyway, and quite frankly a 2 or 3 hour movie cannot match the emotional investment that comes with 4 series and change from a TV show. Now matter how open minded I want to be, I wont be able to look at it as anything except a "cheap" knockoff toy you get at a flea market, and not the real thing.
  • Same here Dac. I'll watch it but there's no way I can take it too seriously after Moore's great series.
  • DangerousDac
I know I said i'd try not to be hypocritical, but fuck it. This is WAY too soon, and with another DVD movie still to be released, with the prospect of more to be made based on RDM's version, this is just stupid. So what Star Trek/CSI had multiple series running concurrently, this is two versions of the same story. Urgh, this is not going to end well.
  • dumbest thing i have heard in awhile.
  • ScanCase
There was a series that just went off the air and it was amazing. A "reboot" right now would be absolutely ridiculous
  • jim_koman
Well, Superman Returns came out in the midst of an overall "Meh" show. Any Battlestar movie now has the trouble of following up one of the greatest television dramas of the decade, sci-fi or not.

Granted, they could make just a fun sci-fi romp, but Singer runs the risk of marring the legacy of such a universally critically-acclaimed show.
  • braindead360
Um... He is also the guy who directed the first two X-men movies, which were actually pretty good, and he also just did Valkyrie which I though was also a good film. I wish people would stop judging this guys career off Superman Returns. Sure that movie was a steaming pile of dog shit in the afternoon sun, but that doesn't make Singer a bad director. Look at it this way, Stephen Speilberg completely fucked up the last Indiana Jones movie, but does that mean that every movie he directs from here on out will be terrible? I'll agree with anyone who thinks that this movie is being made WAY too early, but assuming that everything that Singer touches from here on out will be nothing but cannon fodder is simply ridiculous.
  • Caprica
Superman Returns was one of the biggest pieces of sh*t I've ever seen and definitely the biggest letdown. All that hype only to lead up to that massive disappointment. How will Singer's Battlestar Galactica be any different? Singer needs to quit ruining Sci-Fi properties and go back to indie drama.
  • shawn3thou
    this is a mistake
  • Did you say steak?!
  • spinster
I'm no fan of Battlestar Gallactica but don't you all remember Bryan Singer was the director of Superman Returns which was a very shitty superhero film so i'm sayin this to save all you Battlestar Galactica fans
  • e_dog
Bryan Singer has eclipsed Tarantino plus Rodriquez in rumored projects. It's kind of exhausting (and no longer interesting) reading about his rumored projects, reboots, and remakes.
  • freemachine
A reboot of a reboot? Excellent. Now I'm convinced that the end is nigh.
  • existenz
Bleh. Singer has nearly killed the Superman franchise, now he wants to crap on the Battlestar franchise?
  • okayflint
this is quite interesting. i loved the tv reboot, not sure what my feelings are on this, but I doubt anything will actually happen
  • Mike
Moore's BSG is enough. At least for now. Caprica is still on the horizon, but does anyone really want BSG without Olmos' Adama? or Helfer's Six? There are some iconic characters there. I cannot imagine a BSG without them. And it is way too soon for another "re-imagining". Let the dust settle on Moore's BSG before you turn it into Star Trek-Lite.
  • frelling_cute
Come on Singer, do Logan's Run not this.
  • It's Kamikaze filmmaking

Moore's BSG was not only the best TV series ever made, it was also better than almost anything that's been on the cinema in a decade.

Is Bryan Singer unhappy about pulling his career out of the shitter after the turgid Superman and wants to throw it back down there.

This can only compare poorly with Moore's absolute masterwork.
  • nic1
Every time I post, I say the same thing - have some NEW ideas Hollywood. Aaaahhhh!!!!!! Invent new stories, new characters ... stop remaking, recycling, reinventing. Remakes, reinventions invariably diminish something from the original.
  • Singer sucks. All of his movies are boring and it just shows how much of a giant tool he is for this to even be considered.
  • Awful idea! Just drop it and walk away...
  • David1225
Can someone just say no to Bryan Singer?! Please. He's a hack.
  • misterclock
Singer's Galactica will rise or fall depending on who he choices to play Adama. Lorne Greene and Edward James Olmos are pretty big acts to follow.
  • kryche
If you read about what his series was going to be back in 2000, Adama was dead, so there probably won't be a need to fill those gigantic shoes.

Dirk Benedict was back as Starbuck, and Richard Hatch was back as a human turned cylon Apollo.

And you can't really call this movie a reboot, or a reboot of a reboot. It's most likely going to be more of a sequel to the original series than anything.

    Battlestar Galactica:The Next Generation.
  • what a waste, i love my bsg but come on hollywood
  • JasonSearcy
I`ll reserve judgment for now, but unless it looks amazing, im thinking the BSG fans will turn against it
  • cruzzercruz
This is the dumbest thing I've heard in a long time. He won't be able to top the amazing recent series and, let's face it, Singer is pretty much done anyway.
  • Ender
I think it's a great idea! And while they're at it, they can reboot LOST before the 6th season, redo Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Dakota Fanning as Hermione?), and bring HOUSE M.D. to the big screen with Charlie Sheen as the good doctor. Awesome!
  • Carla
LOL. Thank you for graphically pointing out the idiocy of this whole thing.
  • CD
and it's about time for another star trek reboot :)
  • derem
This stupid on epic levels. What, was he watching the recent series and thought. "You know, I could tell this story better, and in just 2 hours."

This is a bad April fools joke, and it's August.
  • whsmith
So full of fail, it's impossible for me to express it.
  • Octoberist
I like Bryan Singer, but he's always putting himself into these situations when it comes to a property with a big fanbase.

Battlestar..already had a re-boot with the new series, and to be honest -despite not seeing a single episode (YET) - it doesn't take a genius to see that the new series had a HUGE following. This is the NEW Star Trek (fanbase, not actual content).

For Singer to be ignorant of it, like how he was somewhat ignorant of the extensive history of Superman, only to confine it to the Richard Donner movies.
  • Say it ain't so, why????
  • frelling_cute
This ranks right up there with A new Buffy movie and a Poltergeist remake.
I would rather him work on the Logan's Run remake he was talking about year ago.
  • Sheriff Dewey
The series never needed Bryan Singer to reboot it or to make it great. That was already accomplished successfully. If the makers intended a feature, they would have made one. Singer needs to work with original material that he can put his stamp on and as long as he stays far away from Superman, I'm sure he will continue to make solid projects. But in my opinion, making a new Battlestar Galactica movie is like milking a dead (by natural causes) cow.
  • jamieromance
Is it just me or is Singer the most overrated director of all time? Usual Suspects and Valkyrie were great movies but it wasnt all him, the cast in those films were awesome so his job was easy. But McG showed him up on Xmen 3 and Singer killed the Superman franchise...SUPERMAN!!!

    Dear Mr Singer,

Please stay away from movie properties I like, you have ruined enough lives.
  • Evan
"but instead a complete re-imagining of the original 1970’s series."

LOL! Is that not what the last series was?

    Geez! Come on now!
  • 'Sexy Beast' directing genius Jonathan Glazer can't get funding for another movie, yet this pointless, redundant surefire loser in the wake of the seminal series gets greenlit...! Where's the sense?
  • Timbo
    Hackmeister Singer strikes again!
  • Why not...every other franchise is getting redone.
  • CD
yeah but this was just re-done
  • Mark
I hope they bring the original cast back as the older generation. I'm all for seeing a completely new cast in those Vipers though. This film is going to be great!

    Its about time Bryan!!!
  • roxy
i'd love to watch a film about the original bsg and with the original cast and if it is possible with that old simple spirit it had. i never liked the new reimagined versions of the series. it would be wonderful to know what happened to the real starbuck and the real apollo (dirk benedict and richard hatch)
