Harry Potter

I’ve always wished that Warner Bros had filmed extended editions of the Harry Potter films, in the same vein as Peter Jackson filmed the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Of course, anyone who knows the many differences between the books and the released films knows that it really wouldn’t have been possible. To squeeze the most important plot points into the films, scenes, characters and information have been combined in a way that sometimes eliminate the wonderful side stories that we loved from the novels.

Over the course of the series, there have been many scenes, sequences and moments that were filmed but ended up on the cutting room floor. And it appears that Warner Bros is hoping to squeeze a bit more money out of the very popular wizard franchise by releasing extended editions of all the Harry Potter films.

RopeofSilicon was the first to notice a listing in the latest MPAA Rating Bulletin for Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (Extended Edition) which earned the same PG rating, for the same reasons as te theatrical release (some scary moments and mild language). Ropes contacted Warner Bros Home Video about the mention, and they confirmed that “Although we’ve not announced [it yet], all Harry Potter films are being planned to get special upcoming releases!”

Will the new extended editions be released exclusively on Blu-Ray? DVD? Will the get a theatrical re-release? We have no idea as no further details were mentioned.

And how much longer can we expect from an “extended edition”? Director Chris Columbus added 7 minutes of deleted scenes back into the movie for its May 2004 ABC broadcast premiere. The original two-disc DVD release of the film features seven deleted scenes, only accessible by searching for the Sorcerer’s Stone, which has been described by Digitalbits as “a long, involved process that means getting a wand from one virtual location on the disc, and then going to another location and accomplishing a number of interactive challenges.” And from what I can tell, the deleted scenes didn’t add up to much more than 7 minutes. So I really wonder if the Extended Edition will be not much more than a marketing gimmick.

Will the extended editions be released theatrically, or just on home video? I’ve noticed that most of the director’s cuts released on home video are never resubmitted for MPAA approval. I’m not sure if this is because they usually include footage cut from a theatrical R-Rated release which the MPAA wasn’t too keen on to begin with, or if the MPAA rating doesn’t mean as much when releasing a film on home video. One could be quick to assume that by submitting the film for MPAA approval may mean that they are considering a theatrical release, even a limited one. But who knows?

Rumors of a home-video released extended editions have been floating around the Harry Potter fan community for a couple years now. A post from December 2007 on LeakyLounge.com claimed that Warner Bros was planning to release extended versions of the Potter films, starting with Sorcerer’s Stone in Mid-2008 which was going to run an extra 30 minutes in length. The rumor claimed that each film would be released in a 4-disc box set containing the original version, extended edition and two discs worth of special features.

Update: /Film reader Mark S points out that the Digital Bits reported that Ultimate Collector’s Edition Blu-rays for the first two films are now up for preorder on Amazon. It is very possible that the extended cuts will be included on these yet-to-be-officially-announced releases.

  • anything harry potter I am game for. bring it on.
  • Colin
I bet they re-rated it just for home video. Because who knows, there might be some idiot who sees it is unrated and decides it's not appropriate for their child.
  • kzap
Well it might not be, that is the point of rating, I could see extended editions of the later films being 4 - 7 15 in the UK (maybe even R in the US).

    please no
  • okayflint
i like more of things that are good, count me in

There is a reason that scenes didn't make the final cut...
  • bonchampion
because the theatrical cuts are already edging the line of obscenely long?
  • If having the last three movies be four to five hours long is what it took for them to be at least somewhat true to the books, I would have gladly sat through it (or gone out and seen both movies if they were to split them up).
  • Its good to have an extended edition on harry potter series because it has good storyline. I am looking forward for extended edition of Harry Potter and Chamber of Secrets on Home Video Edition.
  • If they were anything of crucial value, they would have already released them on DVD and then put them back in the theaters just in time for the last 2 films.
  • Allm0st
So they just mash together all the deleted scenes and special they should have put on the first DVD's and call it extended? Doesn't sound good to me, besides Peter Jackson filmed Lord of the Rings to have Extended Versions which I enjoy still today.

This is good news. The Goblet of Fire clearly had a lot cut out of it and I think it made the film noticably unfinished. i.e. the quidditch world cup being cut short, some characters lines and/or screen time being drastically cut etc.
  • bonchampion
i dont think that quidditch match was filmed buddy. mostly because those scenes are hardly "film" at all. If they had spent all that money on cgi, it would have been in the film.
  • R rated movies get released on dvd as "unrated" because it helps their marketing, i.e. "holy shit, i bet this has boobs in it since it's unrated!". People equate unrated with NC-17, which is most likely why the Harry Potter films will be resubmitted for ratings with the new footage.

Unrated Director's Cut of Harry Potter just sounds silly (although, strangely awesome... I would like that title...)
  • William_Wright
i have a feeling these would be as shitty as the lion, witch, and the wardrobe "extended" cut.
  • saeseetom
    Those BD covers look horrible!
  • capawesome
I'm waiting for the reboot of this series.
  • kzap
I'm waiting for a BBC TV series of the books, how awesome would that be!?
Although unlikely to happen it's the only thing that will get me back into Harry Potter.
  • I've already said this to whoever twit keeps saying a BBC series:

A HARRY. POTTER. SERIES. OF GRAPHIC. NOVELS.
  • jojo
how about we delete these films from history and start over from scratch :)

this is one remake i look forward to.
  • reese
I guarantee that in 20-30 years these movies will be remade, they'll be condensed into a trilogy and won't resemble the books in any way, shape or form. They'll be complete 're-imaginings'. That's my prognostication -- and I'll be proven right.
  • I doubt J. K. Rowling would permit Warner Brothers to tear her story apart like that. WB doesn't own perpetual film rights. They'd have to run it by Rowling, and I really can't see her accepting that.
  • reese
It will happen after she dies. Some studio will pick up the rights and will 're-imagine' it with American actors, the characters will spout whatever the ebonics slang will be popular at the time, etc. We all know this will inevitably happen as awful as it sounds, I mean just look at the remakes and 're-imaginings' going on now. The same fate will sadly befall the Potter franchise. The book purists who get their panties in a bunch over the changes in the movie series now are in for a shock when they see what they will do to it in the future. I can see it happening.
  • The rights will last at least 75 years after she dies, and they will go to her family. Some of them might down the road though...

Either way, it would be disgusting.
  • Huffleclaw65
I hope this is true! Extended editions of Harry Potter would be awesome! Especially for Order of the Phoenix. It was way too short.
  • I've seen some interview material that suggests that there was a lot cut out of the fifth and sixth films. There was a lot more of the Department of Mysteries filmed than was shown, and I heard that about an hour of "usable material" was cut because the director was afraid people wouldn't sit through it. (If people wouldn't sit through it, they shouldn't be going to movie theaters. I'm sick of these short movies hollywood keeps releasing. I want 3-4 hour films, especially with ticket prices these days...)
  • Huffleclaw65
I agree. There was a lot cut out of these movies. I would have no problem
sitting through a 3 or 4 hour Harry Potter movie! I am so looking forward
    to these extended editions.
  • filmbuffrich
Given what a cash cow the Potter franchise has been for Warners, it was a pretty safe bet that there would be some sort of extended edition if only to milk a few more dollars out of fans' pockets.
  • kzap
Meh, the deleted scenes were already on the DVD, pretty much the ONLY special feature on the 2 disc edition and could have easily been squeezed onto one disc without all the fancy main menus but then they couldn't sell it as a 2 disc edition.
The Harry Potter franchise has gone on to long and this will not revive it, I'll give it a miss.

    [Prepared for fan-boy/girl hate mail]
  • stevenkar
They should dimensionalise them and re-release them in 3D and on IMAX. Great way to milk them for more money.

Cameron is doing it with Titanic, Lucas is doing it with Star Wars.
  • spinster
Oh when i seen this Article I thought they were pushing back the Deathly Hollows
  • CheshireAna
Really, are the films even good enough to warrant extended releases?
  • my first reaction to this is YES! but I'm really not interested in extended versions of the first two films unless they've thoroughly cleaned up the special effects. which if that is the case that would be amazing to see those with less cheesy effects.
  • Someone shoot Harry Potter. And Edward Cullens. What happened to REAL movies!? These are 2.5 hour commercials for people to buy all the crap they stick the logos on, not Movies.....

Extended Remixes just for the sake of milking the rabid fans. Bravo! Anyone who buys into deserves what they get.
  • FAIL
  • The new Blu-Rays better have Dolby TrueHD on them.
  • Jon
I seriously can't wait - it's splattered across the internet and WB has stated about this so i guess it's true. I can't wait !
