Avatar Day Showtime and Tickets Details

When James Cameron and 20th Century Fox announced Avatar Day two weeks ago at Comic Con, the idea was greeted with great enthusiasm, but some confusion. Presenting a long Avatar sneak preview for free at IMAX 3D theatres sounds like a great idea, but how will the promotion work in practice? It’s a great way for (potential) fans everywhere to see what six thousand saw at Comic Con, but the logistics seem daunting. Now details emerge; they’re after the break.

The LA Times has some new specifics. On Monday, August 17, Fox will give away tickets on a first-come, first-serve basis through the website avatarmovie.com. Tickets will be available beginning at Noon PST (3pm EST), so you’ll have to be ready to click right then, as even with more than a hundred participating theatres (around 70 in the US) the tickets will go fast. Will you be able to score more than one or two tickets at a time? We don’t yet know, but expect a severe limitation on tickets per user. (And start taking odds now on what they’ll go for on eBay by Monday evening.)

The screenings will take place at 6 and 6:30pm on Friday, August 21. The presentation will begin with an introduction from James Cameron, after which will follow sixteen minutes of footage, including some stuff not shown at Comic Con. (The LA Times says sixteen minutes, which contrasts the originally announced 15 minutes. I’ll update to clarify when I know if the presentation will be 15 min of footage and a one-minute intro, or something different.) The Avatar trailer will also hit theatres that day, but the IMAX presentation obviously offers a better look at the visual fireworks Cameron has assembled for his first narrative feature in twelve years.

Avatar Day will also see the public release of the trailer for UbiSoft’s video game based on the film, and the designs of all Mattel’s toys. (One of which, showing Sam Worthington’s Na’vi avatar, was recently leaked and quickly C&D’d away.)

    I cannot wait for this!
  • Do we know which theaters will be participating here in the US?
  • no... we find out on Monday I bet...
  • Fir3Wolf
I'm hoping my theater plays it because I'm dying to see some footage of this movie.
  • This all seems kind of dumb :-/
  • I think this is a great idea. And will only build the hype for this movie. I will probably not be around one of the 70 theaters, but if I was I would be there for sure!!!!
  • michaelrainey
This is great hype. This is THE James Cameron's return to mainstream Hollywood since he made the biggest movie in the entire world, Titanic. I support him and everything Avatar completely! This is gonna be the start of something BIG all over again.
  • RosanatorDA
will this be bigger than aquaman?
  • enzomoran
I dont know, didnt Aquaman become the top grossing film ever? haha
  • Avatarded
Keep up the good work promoting your 3oo million dollar cartoon Cameron and FOX..... LMAO.
  • I REALLY hope the 'ckets go worldwide.
  • Topolab
Will there be any participating theaters in Canada?
  • okayflint
oh man, i really hope I manage to score some tickets, I can't wait, so glad i don't have to work that day, plan on seeing a movie afterwards inglorious bastards afterwards
  • theGinna
My local IMAX is running a competition to win tickets for the event. Find out next Tuesday if I've won them. Here's hoping.
  • Ghost
Ugh, this is a terrible way of going about showing footage. Will build them a lot of hype though. Should've known they care more about hype than the actual number of people who get a chance to see it.
  • Marco
Cmon Fox, give Canada some information!
  • IYFreak
I really hope I can win tickets for this, I've never one a raffle thing in my life. O_O please!! please!!!
  • woodgab
I got 4 tickets for the Budapest screening. It is good to be european:)
  • Wiimo
So we still have no idea/list of participating theaters? This all seems poorly planned & kind of last minute.
  • quintushalls
I have amblyopia in one eye (can't see 3D), so if I can go to this, it would be a great way to test if I can actually see the feature film. I would hate to go to the theater and everything appear blurry in my eyes.
  • Junglism
Is any of this going to be happening in London?
  • JimKing
ALREADY tickets available through seefilmfirst. Hurry!
  • stamps09

  • FilmBrad
Hollywood Reporter just posted a story...

"It will be two tickets to a customer to keep people from hoarding," Fox distribution boss Bruce Snyder said Wednesday. "We expect a tremendous amount of interest from the fans who are aware of 'Avatar.' "
  • Andrew
List of theaters would be very helpful. I'll be in an all day meeting that day, so I'd like to know if it'd be worth my time to take an "extended bathroom break" around 3 to grab a ticket...

I haven't seen 1 frame from this movie and I already hate it. Seriously, they are treating showing a bit of footage from a movie like a freaking holiday. And really I don't want to see 15 minutes of a movie. I love trailers cause they just show enough to whet my appetite but seriously 15 minutes is way too much. I'd rather wait for the movie itself.

This is pure ego, plain and simple.

Every one so far and will continue to focus on the CGI and the integration with live action - but no one is talking about the story, which sounds like Dances with Wolves in space. In other words, lame.

It's all going to end up as much ado about nothing.

Whoa, what's with all the hostility. Apparently you've never heard of a word called "Marketing." This movie cost the studios nearly $300 million to make, and if they don't start early by holding events like these, there is no way that they will be able to recoup their losses, especially with this being a completely original project that no one other that movie geeks that read entertainment blogs has heard of. And as far as your Dances with Wolves analogy, there have been several movies that have followed that particular structure; Last Samurai for example. However, that doesn't mean that they are the same movie. I understand that everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but before you pass judgment, you should really consider waiting until there is some official and legitimate material released for you to judge.
  • I'll defiantly be there!! Hopefully it's not sold out within the first 5 minutes lol
  • Kareem
Is Los Angeles out? Cause I've been refreshing since before they offered tickets, and there are no theaters listed below the words, "August 21 is your first chance to see Avatar! Select a theater below to reserve your ticket to experience extended scenes in IMAX 3D from James Cameron's epic motion picture AVATAR. One Day Only!"

Is this the same for everybody or just those in the bigger cities?
  • its the same for me.
  • Neel
same with me. Also wondering about LA. Now the connection is just timing out.
