New Screenwriter To Board Super Max

green_arrow

New news on Super Max has been a long time coming. The state of play was this: Justin Marks was scripting, David Goyer was producing, DC comics’ Green Arrow was the lead character and the plot would see him incarcerated in the tip-topper most high security prison in the DC universe, framed for a crime he didn’t commit.

There have been any number of rumors surrounding the project along the way. Would Matt Damon star as the Green Arrow? Would Kevin Smith direct? Would Lex Luthor, The Riddler or The Joker appear? It has generated a healthy bag full of headlines over a couple of years without actually going into production, or even pre-production. Nonetheless, slow and steady can often win the race and Super Max is still chugging along steadily. David Goyer has spoken to MTV and given an update. Here’s the man himself:

We’re working on that. We’re about to bring on another writer. Obviously, Warner Bros. is now heavily into mining all of the various DC properties.

So the studio won’t let it die, though it isn’t yet in the shape they’d want for it? It would seem that’s what he’s saying here.

Justin Marks was one of the originators of the concept, so it’s actually quite sad to hear he’s off the script. Having said that, I don’t know of any evidence that he can actually write anything worth a jot.

Here’s an old quote from Goyer on the beginnings of Super Max:

The basic concept actually came about through Justin Marks, a terrific young writer my wife Jessika (a producer) had previously worked with. They thought the idea of a prison-break story set in a jail designed exclusively for super-villains was a cool one. And I heartily agreed.

It is a cracking good hook, that’s for sure. Let’s hope the new writer is a real talent and a suitable director follows soon after.

Justin Hartley should continue his rolw with the Green Arrow
  • Travis McGee
Hartley is a decent actor, but giving him the role would tie the Smallville series in the film universe. And I have to say that that would be a terrible idea. Hartley is the best actor on the show, but that isn't saying much seeing the talent around him.
  • spinster
In Smallville is the best adaptation of superman this world has seen, like for real look at superman returns that was all hype the movie itself was boring the first superman was decent but no enough action the second superman was good, but not parts 3 and 4
  • youngblaze
sorry Justin Hartley should not be cast as Green Arrow just like Tom Welling should not play Superman in the reboot movie the reason is they are just TV actors from Smallville
  • I'm a fan of Smallville but Tom Welling or Justin Hartley should not play their respective characters in movies. Smallville is considered an alternative universe that is separate from their original material.
  • gunner
I would love Justin Hartley in the role. And the movie doesn't have to waste time with a Green Arrow origin if they use him. Just get right to the super prison good stuff. If people want to know the origin, WB can just tell them to buy the tv box set. Then WB has money pouring in from every direction. Win-win.
  • Happy Feet?! AYFKM?
The Justice League's producer's best idea was trying to get Tom Welling and Michael Keaton. If you're going to have the Justice League and stand alone franchises in separate movie universes, then that was the way to do it. Too bad he couldn't pull it off. Once he turned casting over to Happy Feet dude, the Justice League movie went into the crapper. Now we'll be lucky to see Justice League before the next 20 years.
  • while I like Hartley he's too young. The current script picks up with Queen having been doing the GA thing for 10 years.
  • Rockie
i heard of this film from a co-worker

and i will repeat what i said to him

make this fucking movie now please
  • mangoshakes
i highly doubt this will happen. we'll see though.
  • montimer
Sad as it makes me feel I've got to agree.

While the idea is incredible, Studios aren't ready (and possibly never will be) for a supervillain-centric film. Look at Wanted, where any redeeming qualities the story had were gutted for fear of the word 'supervillain'.

Including The Green Arrow was a great idea to get the film in front of the studio, but there's no way that this will actually see the light of day. It's just too far from the standard cinematic fayre. If we're incredibly lucky, and Green Lantern makes a mint, there's the slightest chance we might see a generic Green Arrow movie, but this one is almost certainly dead in the water.
  • youngblaze
as much i want to see a cool Green Arrow movie but this Supermax idea is bad. they should do a script focusing on Green Arrow origins and Green Arrow main villains instead of using Superman and Batman villains in a Green Arrow movie.

maybe Green Arrow should face Deathstroke, Shado, Daniel "Brick" Brickwell or other Green Arrow rogues Gallery.

next to Iron Man and The Dark Knight, this has the potential to be the best superhero film of the next few years...it has the best concept, a great cast of characters to choose from, and talented people who are willing to contribute...why is Warners holding back on this one, it should be their top priority while Nolan is on Inception...Get the Joker back in a movie before Batman 3 so the world can see the character didnt die with Ledger...nothing against Heath but I love the Joker and he needs to be on screen more than once every quarter century...hes the only superhero character to win a Oscar, its because hes that great of a character and Ledger did such a good job of course but HES THAT MUCH OF A GREAT CHARACTER!!!!!...SuperMax with a Jim Lee style Joker would be sick...and a Frank Gorshin style Riddler...I'd imagine its going to be Iron Man meets the prison from Face/Off meets Megan Fox's mouth ( bc its so hot! )....WARNERS YOU HAVE TO MAKE THIS BEFORE MARVEL SMASHES YOU AT THE BOX OFFICE THE NEXT DECADE!!!

i think WB should do a Green Arrow movie before Marvel do a Hawkeye solo movie
  • Merciful_budah
LOL. I'm one of the biggest hawkeye fans you'll meet (for reals. I got almost full runs of Thunderbolts, Avengers:Spotlight, and WCA as well as all his solo series) and even I'm resigned to the fact that that movie's never gonna happen. I'm just hoping Clint Barton has a part in the Avengers Movie.
  • Merciful_budah
I'm not saying this to be a jerk or anything, but the Joker didn't win the oscar, Heath ledger did. And it had nothing to do with the job Ledger did or how well constructed the character is (although I agree with you 100% on both those points). If Ledger was still alive, he wouldn't have even been nominated. And one way or another, I can all but guarantee that they won't be putting Joker or Lex Luthor in this film. The Riddler is a possibility I could see though. I suppose that would depend on whether or not Chris Nolan has already called dibs.
  • It's funny to me that this story is coming out today since I actually started reading Marks Super Max screenplay this afternoon. I'm not very far into it but I'd have to say from the first 20ish pages Marks has an excellent screenplay with a very original idea and knows how to write.
It's not often that you get a superhero movie that begins 10 years into the heroes career without beginning with the origin story. Quite refreshing actually.

"It's not often that you get a superhero movie that begins 10 years into the heroes career without beginning with the origin story. Quite refreshing actually."

This is why the movie will never get made. It's too refreshing. Movie studios think origins are the safer way to go. So they'll do a GA origin and promise SuperMax as the sequel, only the origin will be so boring that a sequel will never get made.

    Alcatraz!

I read the Justin Marks script. It was crap in my opinion, about on par with the new G.I. Joe movie. However the execs at the company I was working for seemed to love it. I'm not surprised that the script needs work.
  • existenz
I should also mention that the draft I read had a lead villain named "Merlyn". Lex Luthor was mentioned in a line of dialogue, but you never see other recognizable villains like Joker, Riddler, Goblin, etc.
  • Octoberist
Merlyn is one of Green Arrow's enemies.

But yes, one of the faults of the script was that Ollie had no character. Ollie in the comics, from what I understand, is a very left-wing political cynical character. I didn't see any of that in the script.
  • Mason
    Oh thank god...

I completely agree, it was absolute rubbish. One really good twist and nothing else.

    Easily DC's Wolverine.
  • Khuzud
Do we really need a Green Arrow movie? It's a guy with a bow and arrow for Christ's sake. This guy is obscure even for comic book nerds. It's starting to look like DC is just trying to keep up with Marvel at this point.
  • Octoberist
also, sounds like you need to know a little bit more about Green Arrow too, man.
  • Khuzud
Do I need to? Absolutely not.
  • Octoberist
I think an open minded person would, khuzud.

I'm not even the biggest Green Arrow fan but I'm not gonna bash the character unless I actually read some of the books. He has a political/cynical view of the world, and that makes him special to the people who like him.
  • Film the damn movie already! I read (and reported) on Latino Review script review last year and this film sounds like a real corker - I'll be interested to see which Joker they opt to use (if he gets included) - the DC Comics classic or The Dark Knight version?
  • Joker is just mentioned as being in a cell. We don't see him and if they do show him it would only be for a split second.
Riddler is just referenced as "E. Nigma" is scratched into a prison cell wall
Same with Luthor he's referenced as being in the prison but never seen.
  • dannydreg
The Joker is never actually seen on screen, it's only a marker to his cell door that reads: " 2714, Joker"
  • It sounds like a great idea for a Comic Book Movie since all the others are just origins anyway. I think it would have been awesome to have a movie like this but as we can see, originality isn't what people want to see.

Hartley's good on the small screen, not on the big screen. I realize I haven't ever seen him in a movie but I think it would be better if they just keep the show and the movies separate like what they've done so far with Superman.

I think what DC/WB is trying to do is establish all their Justice League characters so they can have a movie similar to what Marvel is doing with their Avengers movie. It will take some time to get it done but movies have never been made quick, especially superhero films.
  • Electro_Jones
I'd like to see someone with a little more history behind him in this role. Specifically, I'd like to see someone in their late thirties, maybe even a little older. GA has always seemed to have a few years on his super brethren to me. A more mature actor would help him stand out a little, as well as continue the post Iron Man attempt to give these characters a little more pre-hero backstory.
  • jmble
I love the idea. I agree with the users who say that an older actor should portray Oliver Queen. He is definately more of a middle aged super hero. I would listen to the idea of Hartley if this was an origins pic, but with the idea being that The Green Arrow is already an established hero, I would tend to use someone closer to intended age of the hero.

Those of you who aren't as familiar with The Green Arrow should check out the series beginning with his resurection, which was partly written by Kevin Smith.

Love his movies or hate them, Kevin Smith has a knack for great comic book writing and I think he captures The Green Arrow perfect.
  • Just finished the script it's kind of a conspiracy thriller/Prison Break with Superpowers.
It works and with some polish I think it could be a really good movie. The dialogue was good and it has lots of good action.
I will say the intro to prison scenes are a bit cliche with the new guy, GA, meeting a buddy who shows him around and he has to fight the Big Man on Campus before anyone respects him. But with superpowers.
But overall I think it could be a fun movie.
