VOTD: The Pilot Episode of NBC’s Community

Community

NBC is getting clever with their marketing of the new half-hour comedy series Community, putting the entire pilot episode online for anyone in the United States to watch. The catch is you need to become a fan of the show’s facebook page to view the episode. They also make it very easy to tell your other facebook friends about the show. Considering the show won’t premiere until Thursday, September 17, 2009 at 9:30pm, and its a commercial free presentation, I think it might be worth sharing.

The series is created by the Russo brothers, who directed a bunch of episodes of Arrested Development, wrote and directed the 2002 film Welcome to Collinwood, and the 2006 comedy You, Me and Dupree. The show is set in a community college (hence the title), and centers on Jeff (Joel McHale), a suspended lawyer who is back in school after his college degree is deemed invalid by the State Bar. The series also features Chevy Chase, Alison Brie (Trudy from Mad Men) and Donald Glover (of Derrick Comedy and Mystery Team fame). Head on over to Facebook and become a Community fan to watch the pilot episode.

Thanks for the heads up, Peter. I saw them advertising this show during the football game last night and it had me laughing every time.
  • Goddamn U.S only B.S. I really want to see this, but I am not an American so I can't. NBC can kiss my arse.
  • Not bad, a lot better than anything else NBC has put out in awhile.
  • frelling_cute
I love Joe McCale and Chevy Chase. I will give it a try.
  • Frank_Viola
Video playback is awful. Very funny however
  • lelandbrungardt
Joel McHale ftw. The Soup is doing for entertainment media what The Daily Show has done for the news media.
  • I wish there was a version not attached to Facebook, so my boyfriend could watch it from Kuala Lumpur..
  • GreatBigLion
Arrested Development is genius, but hopefully this is better than the awful You, Me and Dupree.
  • Scruffmcgruff
Hilarious. plus that new facebook video player isnt too shabby either. mchale has perfect comic timing and the bit where the indian student thinks hes deaf was amazing
  • UglyCasanova
Ummm, i don't mean to bust your balls, but the show was created by Dan Harmon. He wrote monster house, and co-created the Sarah Silverman Program, among other things
  • crockeronline
Exactly. Harmon is a fantastic writer and deserves the credit for much of what makes this show funny. The Russo Bros are great directors paired with an awesome showrunner.
  • jdchristensen
Wow, that was much funnier than I thought it would be. I'll definitely be watching the show once it airs!
  • dagreenman18
Im genuinely excited to see this show. i freaking love Jole McHale and it's nice to see Chevy Chase again.
  • Very Clever. I enjoyed it a lot. Joel Mchale was always right on cue. The transactions between the professor and Joel Mchales character were the best.
  • Uh, John Oliver was funny, and Glover was okay, but I was underwhelmed. Still, it's only a pilot, and it does have potential.
  • I liked it, McHale is always funny. Loved Matt & Kim all over it too.
  • doctorfumanchu
no thanks, no facebook crap for me.
  • Colonel_Kurtz
ditto. I saw a scene from this a while ago. It looked good, but I'm not joining Facebook just to watch a pilot a few weeks early.

I read in a Chevy Chase autobiography that the one thing he would NEVER do is a sitcom. He was quite clear in that fact- he said it a number of times. I wonder if he ever will do a sitcom?
  • vadmspartan
Haven't seen it yet, but hopefully it will help dispel the negative connotation projected on community colleges.
  • gearhead364
So far it has only increased the negative connotations projected on community colleges by stereotyping all of the main cast into overall failures.
