giamatti 3 stooges

In June, a gossip columnist suggested to the Farrelly Brothers that Paul Giamatti play Larry in The Three Stooges after Sean Penn backed out of the role due to family issues. Bobby Farrelly admitted to the paper that Giamatti would not only be “a sensational Larry,” but they’d “love to have Paul.” Unfortunately “an offer” has already been sent out “to someone else.” Giamatti who was also in town at the Nantucket Film Festival with his comedy Cold Souls, didn’t seem too responsive to the idea.

“They were always so dark and grim. And Moe was this ancient man with a little boy’s haircut. But Larry? I don’t get Larry. He’s strange. He’s sort of the blank guy in the middle.”

The whole thing seemed rather speculative at the time, but it appears the tides have apparently changed. The Boston Globe now reports that the Farrelly Brothers has not only signed Giamatti to take over the role of Larry, but Jim Carrey is no longer attached to play Curly, even though he was reportly gaining a bunch of weight for the part. No word on a replacement for Carrey just yet. Benicio Del Toro is still attached to play Moe. I’m starting to think that this film may never happen, which might be for the better.

  • "I’m starting to think that this film might never happen, which might be for the better."

Couldn't agree more. Something tells me no one in the audience will be laughing "with them". And Benicio Del Toro as Moe? Seriously?

Can't say I ever "got" the Stooges schtick. I know they were popular in the uhh... 40s? I guess when you grow up with comedians such as Eddie Murphy and Sam Kinison, the jokes seem a little tame.

They need to get adam sandler to play the part of moe

Rob Schneider to play larry and John C. Reilly or will farrell to play curry

that would be a billion dollar box office smash!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • A Stooges movie just would not work these days. The first casting of Carrey, Penn, and del Toro was interesting at least. But, the Stooge characters just are not funny anymore, they do not relate to our times. It probably would be better if it does not get made.

It's a bum deal for the Farrelly brothers watching their movie potentially fall apart. I have no interest in this flick being made and I don't think it'd do very well in the theaters. It'll probably save a lot of time and money letting this project go.

This movie would be horrible. Jim Carrey was the only member of the cast who could plausibly pull off Stooges-type slapstick, and now he's gone. Benicio doing the wise-guy Moe schtick? That would just be ridiculous. And while Giamatti could look like Larry, it's hard to see him being really funny in the role.

This movie really needed Chris Farley as Curly. Too bad he's dead. Any other hilarious fat actors out there? Don't say Jonah Hill, he's not funny (even if he looks like Chris Penn). Yeah, this movie just sounds like a bad idea.

Bill Chott, who played Thomas in the Farrelly Bros. film The Ringer should play Curly. He's got the best impression of Curly on the web...

'Snow White and the Three Stooges' (1961) was da bomb!

Of all of those comedy teams (Stooges, Laurel and Hardy), Abbot and Costello were my favorite, followed closely by Bob Hope and Bing Crosby.
  • It would most definitely be for the better if this one never gets off the ground. Sounds like it has potential to end careers. How is it we can all see what a horrible idea it is, but those congested in Hollywood are oblivious to it?

Why does everyone think this is such a bad idea. People are stupid. You don't know what it could have been. I think peoples negativity killed this project. I mean jesus christ your giving your opinion on an announcement of a movie that might be made. I guess instead you'd rather have epic movie 2.

The casting is pretty critical for this. This will only work with the right people. Sean Penn as Moe works. Paul Giamatti as Larry is perfect. Now they just need the right Curly. I'm thinking Ving Rhames or a bald John Goodman might work. Kevin James, maybe? All I can think of off the top of my head...

Benicio Del Toro Huh!! Ok! Eveyone wants to play casting director, I say the only way to make it work is to have Jim Carrey play all three roles. Or Michael Keaton as Moe and Weird Al was Larry!!! What about Shemp and Curley Joe?????
