red dawn casting 2

Entertainment Weekly has revealed four new members of the cast of the 2010 Dan Bradley’s remake of Red Dawn. MGM is producing the redo of the 1984 John Milius action war drama about a bunch of Colorado high school students who must run for cover then Soviet and Cuban troops invade their school. The students decide to wage their own guerrilla warfare against the invaders under the banner of their football team, The Wolverines.

  • Josh Hutcherson (Journey to the Center of the Earth) will play the role of Robert, originated by C. Thomas Howell, the Wolverine’s tech geek and communications specialist who transforms into a warrior along the way.
  • Isabel Lucas (Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen) will play Erica, a role originated by Lea Thompson, the Wolverines’ head cheerleader and Matt’s girlfriend who becomes incarcerated in an internment camp after the invasion.
  • Edwin Hodge (Mental) will play Danny, a role originated by Brad Savage, no longer the young kid but the cool kid in school, the Wolverines’ wide receiver, and Matt’s best friend.
  • Connor Cruise (son of Tom Cruise, appeared in Seven Pounds) as Daryl, a role originated by Darrne Dalton — The mayor’s son, the youngest Wolverine, and Robert’s best friend

The cast also includes previously announced cast members Josh Peck, Adrianne Palicki, Chris Hemsworth. More details after the jump.

  • Chris Hemsworth (best known as Kirk’s father in JJ Abrams’ Star Trek) will be playing Jed Eckert (played by Patrick Swayze in the original), a marine on leave, who leads the group into battle.
  • Josh Peck (The Wackness) will be playing Matt Eckert (played by Charlie Sheen in the original), the younger brother of Jed and the high school’s star quarterback.
  • Adrianne Palicki (Friday Night Lights) will play Toni Mason (played by Jennifer Grey in the original), survivor turned tough girl and Jed’s possible love interest.

Red Dawn is scheduled to hit theaters on September 24th 2010.

Discuss: What do you think of the casting choices so far?

  • If they absolutely have to remake this movie (I wish they wouldn't. Not even sure how they plan to update it to be a non-Cold War movie), I think this is a decent cast minus Isabel Lucas who, like Megan Fox, appears to just be a sex object.

I'm sure they will get crap for casting Hutcherson but I honestly want to see what this guy can do outside of a kid's movie. I have a gut feeling that he might turn out to be a good actor someday.

But why do they have to remake yet another classic? I absolutely loved the first one when I saw it for the first time a few years ago. I really hope they do not ruin it for me.

r u fuckin serious! JOSH HUTCHERSON IS THE FUCKIN BOMB!!!!! so fuck u if u dint think he is not hot or great!
  • 1. Learn how to spell
    2. Learn how to read

I said right in my post that I thought he might be able to do some good, given the right role. Kids roles hardly ever are good. You could put Sir Ian McKellan in a kids movie, and even he would end up sucking.

Now, grow up and learn to read before you start typing random letters and typing in caps. This is /Film, not Myspace. We type correctly, here.

Enjoyed the original "Red Dawn" and this remake won't somehow erase that film so I don't mind this.

Its kind of ridiculous when people put up a "This will rape my childhood" or "ruin the experience of the first" argument when thats simply not the case. Why should a remake affect the way you perceived and enjoyed the original?

Hopefully this and "Kick Ass" opens the way for the now defunct American produced "Battle Royale".

The nemesis will be an interesting one. Won't be surprised if they go for an evil organization ala The Manchurian Group., just to keep with the times.

This movie cast made me throw up a little.

THEY ARE NOT WORTHY OF WOLVERINES!!!
  • i like the casting. Those actors are all young and hip right now. But, if you watch "Red Dawn" these days, it is a joke. It could use a remake, but the whole premise of the soviets invading was stupid. It will need more than just a new bad guy force though too.

I didn't care for the first movie. All this macho, you can't cry shit. Oh Brother.

How are they going to update the film considering the Cold War is long gone? Are they gonna have Al Qaeda or North Koreans parachuting into middle America? I think not. Only the Soviets had the military power to pull of an invasion.

These remakes are getting old and this one in particular is especially lame.

Does one of Connor Cruises scenes include jumping on a blue coach confessing his love for Isabel?

conner cruise should loose seven pounds before daddy gets one of his buddy's to put him in whatever moronic remake their doing. SERIOUSLY, THINK ABOUT IT. RED DAWN can not be remade! especially not with these kids. they want the transformers/gi joe audience but it's simply going FAIL and to be the worst movie ever. Josh Peck needs to get out before his career is destroyed. PLEASE SOMEBODY CAN THIS AND GREENLIGHT SOMETHING ACTUALLY ORIGINAL!

look at the director's imdb! it's a joke. (i know don't always trust imdb) but it says the guy's a freaking stunt man!

No one has said anything about Josh Peck... this guy to play the role of a High School Star QB, and to fill Charlie Sheen's shoes... not going to happen.

I agree they need to stop remaking the great films of yester year, but this is hollywood. Plus, the film and graphics from the `60's, `70's, `80's and even in the `90's were horrible but we still love Star Wars and these originals because of the time and the story... Land of the Lost had horrible graphics from the `70's but we all loved watching the episodes, even today... Now look at the Movie, Land of the Lost. It was horrible. The "updated" the story and the graphics but it was a horrible movie...

Terrible choices. They just look like photoshop models. None of them have what I would call a "real" look...they just look like plastic carbon copies of the same boring Hollywood actors.
  • WAYNE
This film be good..oh yes it will be good.

I thought the original "Red Dawn" movie made a serious mistake that I am sure most of the audience, in 1984, did not notice, the Soviet-occuppied town was showing the classic movie "Alexander Nevsky" for free as comunist propaganda.

Although the movie "Alexander Nevsky" was a Soviet production, here is the irony, anyone who saw the original "Red Dawn" and "Alexander Nevsky", as well, can realize that the Russian characters in "Alexander Nevsky" would have had sympathy for the Wolverines, not the Soviet invaders!

As for making a remake of "Red Dawn", it is a ridiculous idea because neither the Chinese, nor the Russians today, have any desire to invade and occupy the United States of America. Neither country would be able to do business with a foreign-occuppied America!

Today , there is the danger of another 9-11 attack by Muslim extemists and the danger of our own government taking away our freedoms in the name of fighting terrorism, such as the proposal of national I.D. cards.

Maybe if the "Red Dawn" remake were to have the Wolverines fighting against Muslim extremist invaders and the dictatorship of an America were all civil rights and freedoms have been taken away in the name of fighting the Muslim extremist invaders, perhaps that would make more realistic sense for this movie!
