The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus UK Trailer

parnassus_header1

Here it is, at long last , the desperately awaited first trailer for Terry Gilliam’s The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus. You will find it embedded below the break. The UK official site is open too, though at the moment all it contains is a logotype, as above, and a registration box.

When you watch the trailer, not only will you be given a vague intro to the central plot, which is something most coverage has neglected to express at all, you’ll also be given a good look at Heath Ledger as Tony, and glimpses of Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell and Jude Law as… well, as Tony too. There are so many visual ideas in this trailer and they come by so quickly that you really should decide to play it a second time, love it or hate it, just to give it a real chance.

Here’s the trailer, which you can also see on Yahoo. The sooner a HD version arrives the better, I say.

Of course, I’m absolutely in love with it. These are scenes I’ve known about since I first read the screenplay, years ago, but most of which I’ve never seen even a glimpse of until now. More than ever I’m eagerly anticipating what Gilliam is suggesting is the greatest work of his entire career.

The good man himself will be giving an audience at the BFI Southbank one week from now, and I’ll be sure to report back anything and everything of interest.

Seeing Gilliam work with CG in such an expansive and unfettered fashion is absolutely fascinating. There’s reportedly a wider range of aesthetics in the Imaginarium sequences than on display here, but even these are gobsmacking. I’d say Jude Law in a Looney Tunes world of splitting ladders is a favourite of mine so far, but it wasn’t easy to choose.

But its the mainly stuff outside of the Imaginarium shots that really blew me away. The flashback to Christopher Plummer’s Parnassus meeting with Tom Waits’ Old Nick looks like an incredibly handsome and well mounted sequence.

This is the UK trailer, cut by Lionsgate for our release of the film over here in Blighty, due this October. Expect to see variants from the various different distributors handling the film around the world.

  • Looks utterly fantastic. Nobody in Hollywood has a vision like Gilliam.

I will say that I am unhappy that Depp is using his Jack Sparrow voice, though.
  • Franklin
Eric is unhappy. I'll alert the media.
  • Yeah, "Arthur." Good flick. You wanna start quoting movies, pal, you're messing with the wrong guy-- And "That's the fact, Jack."
  • tenno
I was already in the bag for this, but it looks even better than would have thought. Yes yes yes.
  • TheGreenMalice
This is something I can really get behind. I could care less about Heath, but hearing Tom Waits voice made me smile. It looks beautiful. I hope it doesn't disappoint.
  • Frederik
The correct saying would be couldn't care less, not could.
  • dauphin
    actually no

    you're wrong
  • TheGreenMalice
I COULD care less. I choose not to.
  • TestType
I always find it funny that my English grammar is better than most native speakers online. This is probably one of the most common errors ever.
  • Name
That is because native speakers don't give a fuck about grammar in an informal web posting, whereas assholes with something to prove (that would be you) always need to start a dick measuring contest. Which, for the record, we native English speakers usually win (unless the "native" in question is a limey bastard or the "challenger" is from the once-dark continent)
  • If it's possible for you to care less then doesn't that indicate you care at least some?
  • jjhk
Yes, that's correct. "I couldn't care less" means "I could not care less than I already do." And "I could care less" means you at least care some.

LOL, I only chimed in because I thought this was a rather humorous sidebar. Or is it "side bar?" Or side-bar?" Or "sidebarre?".... ;)

Btw, the trailer is AWESOME and I can't wait to see the movie!
  • th3
does anybody wants to see danny d vito fight verne troyer I mean a drinking competion
  • Devito would destroy Troyer. Devito drinks like a fish. I've seen him at The Acrlight bar from time to time. Seems like a nice guy.
  • will
omg i can't wait! heath we miss you so much! but it's amazing to see deep, law and farrel all join :) god bless them
  • Brian
Who are deep and farrel? I've only heard of Depp and Farrell. It's not like their names are spelled out for you in the article above or anything...oh wait...

Such an awe inspiring trailer, this film looks so wonderful in every way, very much looking forward to it! We need more imagination in the world and Gilliam is a true master in so many senses relating.
  • This looks amazing. The cast is one of the best in the biz. I do not mind seeing Depp using that voice, he is good with it. Hope this will be as great as the trailer says it is.
  • Craigasorusrex
I was blown away. Terry Gilliam seems to be at his best again with this one.

It seems as if Gilliam managed to change the appearance of Heaths character with other actors without it being jarring.

Loving the goggles Plummer is wearing in the beginning of the trailer.

Glad there are still a slew of films left this year that seem to be promising.
  • IYFreak
Woah this looks crazy. Can't wait to see it.
  • whsmith
Looks amazing! I'm getting heavy Baron Munchausen vibes from this
  • BlackManJew
I haven't seen Heath Ledger in a film since batman... he's a good actor. I want to see him in more roles!!
  • Craigasorusrex
    Kidding?

    He passed away in 08.

    This is his last role.
  • Rabstown
Oh I get it, because he's dead right? You sir are a tasteless hack BlackManJew! Anyway, the film looks A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!!!!!!!!
  • frank
Does no one here have a sense of humor? My God, do either of you actually think that the male african semite actually thought that Ledger was anything but dead? Jesus H, men!
  • Rabstown
Hey Frank, why don't you go suck your mother's dick and then blow your brains out.
  • papaalkhiughk
It looks like everything Gilliam's done before. Anyway this trailer puts Burton's Alice in Wonderland trailer to shame. Timmy is a poor man's Terry.
  • Roland21
    This looks amazing!
  • brian
wow that movie looks like fun! =D
  • One o' the best trailers I've seen this year. I feel I'm going to love the SHITE out of this film.
  • TestType
Looks amazing, but then again so did the Brothers Grimm and what drivel that turned out to be. I have a little more faith in this one but although I really like Gilliam he doesn't always deliver.
  • Completely agree. When I watch Gilliam flicks they either really amaze me or fall really flat. Still, I'll watch anything he does. Good luck to him and his upcoming second go around at Quixote. Lost in LaMancha was utterly heart-breaking.
  • rockinrors
    This looks great.
    They also look like Droogs.
  • If Tom Waits is in a film, I'm in the theatre... He's among the coolest men who's ever been on this planet.
  • angelestravelguide
ese are scenes I’ve known about since I first read the screenplay, years ago, but most of which I’ve never seen even a glimpse of until now
  • Damn. I miss Ledger. :(
  • Wiimo
Visually it looks pretty great, but like you said, it shows nothing of the plot. After seeing this trailer, I still have no idea what this movie is about. Maybe that's a good thing so that I go into it fresh, but I don't think it does much to draw in the average moviegoer. (Aside from huge names, which may prove to be all it needs.)
  • it shows nothing of the plot? devil makes a deal with man who wants immortality, trades his first daughter and on her 16th birthday she'll belong to the devil. a strange outsider tries to save her. seems like some plot to me.
  • BrendonConnelly
Yes - I was saying it gives those broad strokes but also that the plot has rarely been mentioned before now.
  • Wiimo
Even after watching it multiple times it was hard to tell what's going on. It only makes sense after what you said, but yeah. Maybe because I don't know who any of the characters are, etc. Also, I haven't read anything about this movie, so I'm not familiar with it at all. My point was that it's a visually pleasing trailer and that's about it.
  • Octoberist
Is Lionsgate releasing this in the states?
  • Zinc
Colin Ferrel and Jude Law don't look much like Heath.
  • krackajap
    They aren't supposed to?
  • freemachine
Finally, Gilliam is back to full form. I can't wait for this one.
  • Fir3Wolf
That was one trippy looking trailer and it looks great. I want to see this movie even more now.
  • Q
It looks phenomenal. I wish Ledger would've been around to finish it, but you can't beat the cast chosen to represent him.
  • LuMendz
That made me so happy! Tim Burton loses. :)
  • Would have been great if they had a shot of Ledger saying the line "Nothing's permanent, not even Death".
  • EZ
Anyone know where the music is from?
  • Rockie
    damn.......what a trailer

    that looks brilliant
  • Gilliam's movies always have more ideas than actual execution of those ideas, and I can see he hasn't changed.
