Jay Chou Cast as Kato in The Green Hornet

kato casting
Columbia Pictures has confirmed that Taiwanese star Jay Chou (Curse of the Golden Flower ) has been cast as Kato in The Green Hornet. Stephen Chow had been previously attached to the role, but departed from the project shortly after stepping down from the director’s chair. Official press release after the jump.

THE GREEN HORNET™” GETS HIS KATO IN TAIWANESE SUPERSTAR JAY CHOU

CULVER CITY, Calif., August 7, 2009 – After a worldwide search, Jay Chou, the multi-hyphenate singer-actor and a star throughout Asia, has joined the cast of Michel Gondry’s The Green Hornet in the iconic role of Kato, it was announced today by Doug Belgrad and Matt Tolmach, presidents of Columbia Pictures.

Michel Gondry, the film’s director, added, “Jay is incredibly unique and charming and fights like a wild dog! When I filmed him next to Seth, they had such great chemistry, and I knew the movie will be great.”

Chou said, “It’s an overwhelming experience to take on a role made famous by Bruce Lee. I won’t try to be Bruce Lee’s Kato – I will try to bring my own interpretation to the part. Of course, it’s a dream role, and I’m looking forward to the challenge.”

A classic character of film, television, radio, and comic books returns to the big screen in Columbia Pictures’ feature film The Green Hornet, starring Seth Rogen as the vigilante crime-fighter. The film will be directed by Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) from a screenplay written by Seth Rogen & Evan Goldberg (Superbad, Pineapple Express), based upon “The Green Hornet” radio series created by George W. Trendle, and produced by Neal H. Moritz (The Fast and the Furious). The film is slated for release summer 2010.

A pop-star phenomenon throughout Asia, JAY CHOU brings unexpected gravity and depth to his acting roles. Born Chou Chieh-Lun in Taiwan, 1979, Chou began playing the piano at age four. His mother supported his musical gifts and he went on to master piano and cello. Music, songwriting, and basketball dominated his high school days, and he was first noticed in 1998 when a friend sang one of his pop compositions on a TV talent contest, accompanied by Jay on piano. Alfa Music launched Jay’s career, first as a tunesmith and then as a singer. In 2000, his debut album “Jay” quickly propelled him to stardom with numerous hits. His unique musical style is a fresh-sounding fusion of eastern and western traditions featuring strong lyrics and a personal style of storytelling.

With his soulful voice and infectious tunes, his second album, “Fantasy,” and seven subsequent albums, have continued to win legions of fans young and old throughout Asia. He has been the best-selling Mandarin artist in the world for the past nine years, with a busy performance schedule touring Asia and North America and numerous music industry awards.

Apart from many music videos, Jay began film acting in a starring role in Initial D (2005), a comedy-action hit in China. In 2006, he starred opposite Chow Yun-Fat and Gong Li in Zhang Yimou’s The Curse of the Golden Flower. Since then, he starred in Kung Fu Dunk, and made his directorial debut and starred in Secret. He will next be seen in the Chinese film Ci Ling and in Yuen Woo-Ping’s True Legend.

WTF!!!?! I honestly think he's a horrible actor. I guess they want to capitalize on an Asian popstar to big dollars.
  • Gelman
Since they're going the comedy route, I STILL think they should have chosen Bobby Lee from MAD TV.
  • Octoberist
It's not a comedy comedy. It's an action comedy. So no to Bobby Lee.
  • Gregory V
I'll probably hangout with Bobby Lee tonight, I'll tell him the heartbreakin news.
  • elguason
well they had bobby lee in pineapple expres and that was an action comedy so it would be plausible...but not probabale lol
  • jarvissmart

support jay. a lot of people like jay, only a few of people don't like him. because he is a talent. he can play a lot of musical instrment, compose, and lyrics. except for these ,he is a boss of record company, he is director ,he is actor whose film has very good box-office.
  • jarvissmart

He has no popularity in Japan, Korea, mid-east.etc, High income-Asia countris.
  • yanaliao
Really? So what's up with those 'Hua Liu' Magazines and his jam-packed concert in Japan last year? What was that? Not popular??? I don't think so... even u who despise him and says he's not famous know who Jay Chou is... so how non-famous is he anyway?
  • jamie
Jay Chou's not from China. He's from Taiwan. He became popular in Taiwan then a superstar and spread his stardom to China and to other parts of Asia.

  • Dude
    how good is his english?....

i was leaning more towards an Asian American, but whatever, at least he's Asian, otherwise....

anyway, lucky him, i really hope this role is a good one, atleast what i've heard from Seth and Evan is that they are treating it with respect...i think.
  • wrqjay
director say he is ok in english!
    and his act very good!

i am a chinese ..i know how good is he.
he is a great actor \director\singer and more
  • yanaliao
His English is won't be as better as the people in US, but I think it'll be audible. ^^ Might be better than Chow Yun Fat's and Jackie Chan's... Hopefully~ I've heard him say a few words, I was impressed, but I don't wanna get my hopes that high... but then it's Jay Chou, he never ceases to surprise his fans and people as well... :D
  • My ideal choice was the RZA, followed by Rain.
  • Dude
ohhhhhh. now i know who this guy is. my girlfriend almost paid a few hundred dollars to see his concert when he was in Toronto last year... luckily she didn't.
  • yanaliao
Too bad for ur girlfriend, I won't miss that concert for the world if he came to our country. Lucky Australians did tweet about being able to rush to his concert last July! Many tweeted that they were unfortunate not to be able to catch it... so ur gf must've been bangin' her head right now~ Or someday will be~
  • killerchopsticks
Ugh DO NOT WANT. I wanted an Asian American for the role. The description seemed to fit it. Worse that it's JAY CHOU who's casted. Ugh I hate him.
  • Guest
aint Jay Chou another Asian popstar just like Rain

is Hollywood only casting Asian popstars to play Bruce Lee ironic characters i.e. Rain is cast to star in "Enter The Dragon Remake" and now Jay Chou going to play Kato

what happen to real martial artists
  • killerchopsticks
Unfortunately that how it is in Asia. Many of their popular actors are also their popstars (though there are many that are just actors to balance things out). The worse is that Jay "facialess expression" Chou's acting = cardboard.
  • Guest
i guess you aint a fan of Jay Chou, so most of the actors in Asia are popstar thats abit boring
  • killerchopsticks
I won't deny my bias. But that aside, I don't think Jay Chou is a good actor.

There is still a lot of actors that aren't popstars. And if they are, not all of them are bad actors. Kazunari Ninomiya of the Japanese pop group Arashi is an example. I don't like their music at all (I don't think they can sing), but I think he's a great actor (aside from his Japanese dramas, he was in the Clint Eastwood movie, Letters from Iwojima).
  • Gregory V
I second that, Kazunari Ninomiya is a good actor. I dont know any of his music but I love his character in the japanese dramedy, "Stand Up!" back in 2003.
  • killerchopsticks
Same! Loved him in Stand Up!!
  • derek1121
no, rain doesn't compose music, play piano, cello, or direct movies, jay chou is a musical prodigy, rain is just another pop star.
  • Worst news I've heard all day. They totally should've gone with Tony ja. The Kato role is legendary for making Bruce Lee famous in the states. This guy doesn't deserve the honor. He looks like such a ladyboy.
  • Tony Jaa is great but maybe they wanted someone who is not batshit insane! Go read up on the production of ong bak 2 and then tell me you would hire the guy for anything.
  • Colonel_Kurtz
I was just thinking the same thing. They already had Stephen Chow step down then walk away. I doubt they would even consider hiring someone who might disappear into the jungle for a few months.
  • Well there goes my Tony Jaa write in campaign...
  • Octoberist
    I'ts funny.

I can't comment on Jay Chou because I don't know his work. But out of the people here bashing him, who really has seen him act? OR they just decrying their anger because for the heck of it?
  • Gregory V
He's horrible in Initial D live action film. Not only that, Edison Chen and the film sucked ass. He starred in Curse of the Golden Flower, but nothing to get wild about. He's the lead in the Secret, supposedly a good film but I didnt even bother. Maybe his acting got better, who knows.
  • yanaliao
Jay's acting in Initial D and Curse is a total crap...
But i think you'll gain back confidence in his acting if you guys watched SECRET.
  • darusame
I saw him in the movie Initial D, and he was absolutely horrid. His can't act and his facial expressions are almost Keanu-Reevesian.

    EDIT:
Whoa, we responded about Initial D at the same time! Also, to add on, I also saw him in Curse of the Golden Flower as well, and he wasn't that much better in that movie either.
  • killerchopsticks
Yeah, I have seen some of his works; notably Initial D. Check it out if you have time to see.

Jay Chou is one of those popstars turned actors. So usually (though not all the time), the result is none too surprising. His movies make money not because of his skills as an actor, but his popularity as a popstar/rapper.
  • derek1121
it's funny because most of the people bashing him seem like they know nothing about him, they don't realize how talented in music he is. they compare him to rain and justin timberlake, but he really isn't like them at all, he's a true musician. people need to do their research or before doing such horrible bashing to such a talented person.
  • Merry
Who cares how talented in music he is if he can't act or do martial arts or speak English? Is the movie going to be a musical? (Except that actually, he's not that great of a singer; his talent lies more in composing and even then his last few albums since he got into acting have been decidedly mediocre.)
  • yanaliao
Totally agree! Most of the people who listens to his music loved him as well. Even though they don't understand 'coz it's in Chinese, they loved it, he's a Genius I believe. His acting doesn't look promising, but after Secret, I think I'm confident he'll blow his bashers away as KATO.
  • john
YOU are the biggest homo I've ever read.
  • IYFreak
Oh Cool, I first heard of him when I watched Curse of the Golden Flower, and loved the song he did for the movie. I hope he does good in this film
  • clarencesomerset
Might be a paradigm shift of sorts going on here. Used to that an Asian star needed to have one specialty to appeal to the audience (e.g. Jet Li - kung fu, Jackie Chan - comedy), and the stereotypes are the Angry Asian Man (Li) and Funny Asian Man (Chan), with the Sexy Asian Man a taboo. Things seem to be changing, with Rain, Lee, Jang and now Chou emerging the fore with no special skills other than their charisma (whether real or not).

That said, I'm Taiwanese, and Jay Chou is a terrible actor. If he couldn't even hold his own against Hong Kong pop stars, I seriously doubt he has the comedy chops to pull this role off.
  • yanaliao
Typical of u Taiwanese to dislike Jay. It's alright, you never appreciated what he did for the Taiwan entertainment industry anway... at least those who brought HK Entertainment DOWN and Taiwan UP were those who were least appreciated by you people.
  • clarencesomerset
Nope. I think he's a fine singer, and a pretty pioneering one at that. BUT he is definitely not acting material.
  • cantona_x
this guy is totally a deadpan actor
and that's why the popular culture in China is so shitty
