This summer, I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve overheard a line like, “Oh, I love Conan, but to be honest, I haven’t been watching [The Tonight Show].” Conan’s ratings, which continue to fall and have been widely scrutinized in the media, reflect this trend. Today, it was announced that The Late Show with David Letterman has bested The Tonight Show for four consecutive weeks, a record dating back to 1995. What I find curious about these aforementioned statements from fans, besides their frequency, is that so often they express guilt. Many 20somethings share a bond with Conan O’Brien incomparable to any late night host, and by not watching, it stings of geek treason. But these lounging confessions also pack a subtle tinge of Nikki Finke-like cutthroat satisfaction, and this is what I find most worrisome in terms of the long haul. Why is this?

I’ve started to wonder if this demographic indifference signifies a cultural break, if only—for the sake of Conan’s legacy—a temporary one. Many of Conan’s fans have exited the carefree, insomniac nights of university, and now find themselves gritting in the face of an exceedingly tough reality. It’s dog-eat-dog out there and perhaps this winner-all realization is translating into late night. Conan, long championed as the unattractive geek and underdog, is now facing David Letterman, one of the most reliable, most competitive and funniest men—a rare combination—in TV history. Even in the Digital Age, the Late Night Wars remain insanely relentless. And Letterman, who looks lean, tan, and healthy and seems enlivened by the recent upswing—he’s been waiting for this moment—is drinking Conan’s motherfucking milkshake with a signature “heh heh.” It’s that simple. And against such a high profile, experienced, not-so-young competitor, too simple.

Yesterday at a conference, NBC late-night-chief, Rick Ludwin, referred to a previously issued network press release appointing Conan O’Brien as The King of Late Night as “premature.” Ouch. Who the hell retracts a crown, especially weeks later? A faux pas. Still, as Mark Graham at Vulture points out, Ludwin followed his alarming admission by clarifying that NBC wasn’t disappointed by Conan’s current ratings. But of course they are. And with Jay Leno, aka The Chin, readying his new primetime show on NBC—ugh!—complete with a gimmicky racetrack, we predict that this is going to get ugly; maybe even surge to an unprecedentedly awkward level for Big Network TV.

There is something unsettling and disagreeable about the expansive acoustics in Conan’s pricey, posh new studio. His monologues can now feel incredibly lonely on television because of this, strained of their yesteryear pep. To be candid, I even find the sense of isolation a tad creepy, with shades of Rupert Pupkin auditioning to himself in The King of Comedy. This is not really Conan’s fault. I can hear the studio audience laughing in the distance, sure, but for a host who has established a moderately intimate, normal-geek M.O. over the years, it creates the impression that Conan is a ginger fish out-of-water. It’s not so much the N.Y.C-to-L.A. transition factor; it’s more akin to a Conan-gone-Vegas conundrum.

Since he debuted on The Tonight Show earlier this summer, the dissonance between host and studio has lead me to stay with the show from beginning-to-end only a handful of times. And as Conan and Leno continue to distance themselves in the press, the affable combination and comradery between Letterman and Craig Ferguson, currently my favorite late-night host (alongside Stephen Colbert, if you include that cable block), has never appeared more casual yet on the attack. So, where exactly does his famous Red Wave take Conan from here?

What’s your take on Conan’s low-ratings, The Tonight Show two months in, and the Late Night Wars?

Looks like all those people who said all the old folks who watched leno would tune out were right, sadly. To bad I love Conan, but I also have to admit I haven't been watching, I just forget hes on, and I also don't like Andy, never have.
  • C0NAN09
I still love watching Conan. I watch every night. I think he'll do just fine. He is the King of Late Night!
  • thankyoufor
    i agree
i feel that they should wait for the college to start back up
when im in college all i did during the weeknights was watch Conan
but since im home i never get the chance im always out
im guessing most college students will watch him once were back in college i know i will
  • give it time and see what happens. if the ratings continue to dwindle over the course of weeks/months, NBC is in huge trouble.
  • tekjock
I never watched Conan before, but when he took over the tonight show I watched it and it was brilliant. So I DVR it every night and watch some at night and the rest in the AM. and I never miss an episode.
  • cruzzercruz
I don't really understand how this is happening. The only difference I've seen is that Conan shys away when his guests say something too controversial for the 1130 time slot. I've barely missed an episode, it's infinitely funnier than Leno, and definitely better than both Letterman and Ferguson.
  • fatherbradley
Oh man, seriously, how did Ferguson ever get a show?
  • ericdpalmer
@cruzzer brings up a good point. Conan is WAY funnier than Leno and don't get me started on Ferguson! Is the content the issue or is it the un-familiarity that is pushing viewers away?
  • Wiimo
Good question. I know my older siblings and I like Conan the best out of all the late night hosts, but my parents seem to gravitate towards Letterman. Maybe there's some truth to what was said above, as I'm a college student as well. It seems the majority of Conan's fan base is the younger crowd. I know if I was in high school, I wouldn't be watching TV the whole summer. I'd be more likely to watch when I only have a few hours to get away from classes & homework. In my case, I generally don't watch TV at all, but if I do, I'm watching Conan.

I have a theory for Conan's rating dip:

Jay Leno and David Letterman both represent the old-school "let's see what's in the news today"-style of late night, whereas Conan is a quirkier, eccentric man. That worked for him fine until The Daily Show and the Colbert Report cannibalized his audience with THEIR quirky eccentricity. Plus they can get away with more on cable.

I ADORE Conan, but even I would rather tune in for a few minutes of Colbert. Just my theory.
  • I think you're spot on with the Daily Show and Colbert Report eating up Conan's quirky sense of humor.
  • Evan3000
I've maintained that the competition isn't between Letterman and Conan but between Colbert and Conan. Those two go after the same demographic. Since Colbert bumps up right after The Daily Show, it's easier for viewers to get caught up in Colbert and forget Conan's on. Now, I've been watching the Tonight Show a lot since Conan's been hosting it, but sometimes I can't stand watching the five minutes of local news and commercials between 11:30 and 11:35. This usually causes me to flip to Colbert and sometimes miss the first few minutes of Conan.
  • bobpayne
Of Course Letterman is beating Conan. He has a 15 year following, and something we can all agree on is that Conan is definitely not marketed towards anyone over 40. Even if, what, 15% of the people that watched Leno start watching Letterman instead of Conan, while the others simply tune out, that's a sizeable bump.

I LOVE Conan! I am a die hard, loyal fan of his and have watched every single show of The Tonight Show since he has taken over; whether on TV at 10:35 or at NBC.com the next day. It was premature to crown him "king of late night" but people are still getting accustomed to his unique brand of humor. When Leno took over for Carson his ratings were in the tank for a little bit, but then people warmed up to him and his ratings grew. I think the same will happen here, especially when Letterman's dementia kicks in. I respect Letterman as a host and all, but the guy is loosing it. He screws up facts about his guests almost every time someone is on and it's his job to know that stuff. Conan is s TRUE showman who is on point with every guest that comes on his show. NBC, PLEASE chill on this and give him some time. Conan is the funniest man in late night and you would be fools to dismiss him so quickly. WE LOVE YOU CONAN! You have a strong fan base who admire your intelligent and quirky ways and we will stand behind you. HANG IN THERE.
  • Hi_there
I agree completely... but 11 pm is not when I WANT to watch his show. Does anyone remember when they use to play the episodes of Conan on Comedy Central at 6pm (eastern)? It was like 5 years ago but either way, That WAS the perfect time of the day for Conan. He's really quirky... but tv has a hundred new reasons for getting the shaft at that time of the night. There's the internet, tivo, more channels, on demand, hulu (even though it sucks), etc. etc. etc.

Tonight shows are not important anymore.... I wouldn't be suprised if Attack of the Show starts getting better ratings then Conan considering I do end up accidentally turning to them at their show time way more.
  • Gelman
Leno isn't funny and never has been. His entire show is scripted, nothing is left for him to ad lib, because he can't. All the "Jaywalking" and "audience interviews" are pre-arranged, and it shows.

Contrast this with Letterman who actually HAS a sense of timing and humor. He actually does talk to the audience and just makes it up as he goes along. Usually, it's funny. Leno is incapable of doing this.

Conan, on the other hand, is uncomfortable to watch. Always punctuating each of his sentences with a clap. Odd silences that aren't funny. Boring.

The only other person worth watching on late night is Jimmy Kimmel. He's almost as good as Letterman.

    NBC just sucks.
  • Gelman
Hell, Chelsey Handler is funnier than Conan or Leno.

I agree with you completely, but who could possibly replace Letterman when he kicks the bucket? I don't think Fergusen is really up for the job on CBS.

Also, who couldn't love Tom Cruise being shot out of a cannon? I've been hoping that would happen for a long time.
  • zebrat
when i first saw conan on the tonight show i think i heard angels singing. that man was born to be the host of the tonight show. IMO, he is the the spiritual successor to johnny carson.
    i like andy.
  • felicaday
What gets me are his guests. Bullshit stars advertising bullshit projects. Then they show commercials for Jimmy Fallon, who has some good guests, but just isn't funny himself. i ahte him.
  • I think Fallon is the best late night show on right now. I heard bad things about it at first, and never was a fan of him except for maybe SNL's Weekend Update, so I didn't get around to watching it for a while. (The few unfunny guests I did see didn't help.) Now I can't miss it! The show is VERY creative, and Fallon brings a fresh style and sense humor to late night. (And don't get me started on The Roots, on a muthafuggin late night show!?)
  • Moadeeb
I think people are reacting to conan the same way when he first started out...give him time. Nothing comes with ease. AND true david letterman is the king of late nite but it also took him some time...so give coco a chance hehe
  • conorgb
    Ferguson? really?
  • Evan3000
I keep hearing all this great buzz about Ferguson's show online, but I can't bring myself to watch more than a few minutes of it. The shallow reason is that the show isn't in HD, and I just bought a new HD tv.
  • Ricky
I've always liked Leno, conan and Letterman! I stopped watching Conan for a long time because he basically does the same thing over and over again and sometimes his gags get even too ridiculous for even my taste but I have been following him somewhat faithfully since he took over the tonight show. My biggest problem with him and Letterman is they seem like jerks. I find if Andy makes a joke Conan will jump on top of it and take control. As for Letterman, well....
  • I watch at least 3 episodes of conan a week and 4 episodes of the daily show. That and The office are the only 3 shows that are subscribed to on my Hulu Queue.

Does my hulu queue count as "ratings" or not?
  • GJB
I was also wondering whether watching online adds to ratings. I watch conan every day on Hulu. Also since he has a younger demographic watching him, I imagine that a large chunk of his audience watches via Hulu/NBC.com/etc. which could affect ratings?
  • plagueoftruth
I wonder if DVRing counts as ratings. I DVR it every night but don't watch every episode. Can the ratings people tell if I DVR the show, or if I watch it? I wonder these things...

I certainly think all this talk is jumping the gun a little bit. The guy's been on for 2 months. It takes time to build an audience.
  • Hainer
Ratings don't really work that way... Basically, they get a random sample group and have them do a survey of what they're watching and what they're not watching, and the ratings are based off that. That's why the ratings system is entirely BS and completely broken, and why so many great shows get cancelled before their time.
  • plagueoftruth
That blows. I know that was how the old Nielsen rating system worked but I'd hoped that they would have updated it by now. With digital television and DVR, why on Earth do they not gather real time data on what people are REALLY watching, recording, even how much commercials they fast forward through. That seems like an area of opportunity.
  • kid66
My dad used to work at Neilsen down in Tampa, from what I hear, their methods are ten times more retarded and unreliable than they sound.
  • BSL
Craig Ferguson is the funniest thing to happen to tv since the Dick Van Dyke show...Leno was not funny, Letterman is old news, Fallon is tired frat boy humor and unfortunately, Conan feels like he's just faking it. I tune in to watch Conan's opening monologue which is usually good, but I don't watch the rest if the guests aren't interesting.
  • You've betrayed your age by mentioning Van Dyke.
  • You lost all credibility when, in so many words, you said you don't like Leno but enjoy Ferguson. They're essentially the same person. Safe, hacky, and boring.
  • twrk
ferguson is hardly safe, i guess you watched one episode and made up your mind which is entirely awesome because you come on here and post dumb shit like that and i get to call you out on it.
  • OHSNAP! You totally called me out! You were right, Ferguson is great. I'm sorry.

    "thats just my opinion though..."

Good thing everyone is allowed to have opinions in your world.
  • agirlfan
Ferguson is NOT safe at all. He plays over-the-top characters constantly, makes EXTREMELY lewd jokes, talks about the days he did drugs/was an alcoholic, and cusses ALL-THE-TIME. His producer get so pissed off so much that Craig points this out and cusses some more! Plus, he brings in a more European humor to late night.

I have no idea what show you watched, because "safe" that show is not.
  • ferguson is freaking horrible, and the ONLY time he's ever been funny was in the drew carey show.
  • nfgfan
Ferguson is the king of latenight. I thought he was horrible at first then I sat down and watched him, now I never miss his show. Conan pretty much sucks. Always the same dumb acting, not funny.
  • Charlie
Andy is really not helping matters. I can't stand him at all. He's not funny. And with no banter between Conan and Max, I'm just sitting there going "Well, alright.." and accepting a lackluster show. It's not the same as Late Night.

Oh, and won't someone just kill Jay Leno already? Seriously...
  • Clint F
I was working at an NBC affiliate when Letterman announced his CBS move. That's when NBC did something shrewd: they started airing Late Night shows from the beginning, when Letterman himself totally stunk. Not only did it put an awkward Letterman on the air (take that, CBS), it also reminded us to go easy on that new red-headed kid taking over Late Night - because it takes a while for a guy to get up to speed.

In the case of the Tonight Show, I think Conan's brand of humor is aiming at too young an audience for the 1035 (in my time zone) slot. His core group of fans, if you believe that it's quirky college kids, is a niche at best. Running skits and gags that appeal to that narrow demographic is going to be a sure ratings killer.

While Letterman simply comes off as a bitter old liberal these days, he does have one thing going for him: he's got a little more broad appeal than Conan. As long as NBC tries to pull off the old Conan O'Brien show in an earlier time slot, I think it'll nosedive. If you want to get the large, broad audience, you're going to have to tailor the show to appeal to it.

Jay Leno was forced out of his Tonight Show Spot, and it was wrong. Im glad Conan is doing bad.. I love Jay Leno and im 19, so def not 50 or above. I just think Conan's style is better for 12 30 slot. Im SO EXCITED Jay Leno is coming back, but I wish he was still at Tonight Show.

and for all those people who say Jay Leno sucks, Just look at this ratings... he def does not suck
