The New York Times has a big profile piece on Tom Arnold in which he’s defended by no less than Judd Apatow, but the piece is getting attention for a little quote from Arnold that appears right at the end. Talking about a movie that the NYT admits has no plot or script, the actor says: “All I know is Jim Cameron’s making it and Arnold [Schwarzenegger] and I are going to be in it, and it starts shooting in 14 months, the day after Arnold stops being governor of California. It’s not going to be called True Lies II, but it might as well be. I can live with that.” That’s certainly a good way to get some attention.

This isn’t the first time Tom Arnold has said this. Back in January he made almost exactly the same statement to StarPulse. (”If all goes as planned, the day Arnold (Schwarzenegger) leaves office we will again team with Jim Cameron and do a comedy. Jim says it might not be called “True Lies II,” but it will be fun.”) A sequel had been planned in the early part of this decade, with Eliza Dushku talking up her own involvement years ago, but was derailed by the September 11 attack in New York. Now, with Cameron fully on the Avatar train, talking sequels and spin-off projects, going back to True Lies, or a film quite a bit like it, seems like an improbable move.

The best part about all this is that the entire thrust of the New York Times piece is that Tom Arnold is a bit crazy and will say just about anything that comes to his mind. Take the point of the thing literally, then, and view his Cameron quote as entertainment and not news. At least for the time being.

    Well that's a shame

I think a True Lies 2 would be great. The first one still has staying power after all these years for some reason. The two of them are good together.

Bullshit. That's all I have to say about what was said in the article above.

After Avatar comes out this year, JC will take at least another 3 years before he releases his next movie. Although it could be anything, from a movie about Olympic divers, to an Avatar sequel, or a Battle Angel something ir other--he expressed interest in it at Comic-Con, didn't he?

After Arnie is done governating Culifohneeia, it'll probably take him at least another year or two to get back into the swing of Hollywood and line a project up. I have a feeling he won't get into acting again.

My question is: Who the hell thought it would be a good idea to have a "big profile piece" on Tom Arnold? WTF? Who asked for that. Slow news day for the New York Times.

oh, and, right......Tom Arnold.....sure this is happening.
  • Never going to happen. Cameron can make any movie he wants. He will not revisit one from the 90's. Plus, Arnold will never do it. Tom Arnold needs to move on already...let it go bro.
  • well said

Wasn't Arnold re-elected? I think Tom is lying!!!!!
  • Mike
Arnold can't be re-elected, he's already served two terms.

California is unfortunately poised to have a socialist run the state now.
  • patreeeek
I always knew he'd be back.
  • The only way Cameron is coming back to a True Lies film is if Avatar tanks... never going to happen.
  • Gelman
Avatar might tank. It'll appeal to the same audience Watchmen appealed to: young guys. So it'll make some money but probably won't be able to recoup costs. Watchmen didn't either, and that was hyped big-time.
  • Oh, I'd f*cking LOVE IT if Avatar tanked, BELIEVE me. But I think we'll find its appeal will broaden once word spreads just how unique a film experience it is (supposedly) going to be.
  • politico
Why would you love it if it tanks?

The New York? I think the reporter just listened to the stern show he was on about 2 weeks ago and said that "jimmy" was ready in 18 months for a new true lies and that arnold was on board.

    Tom Arnold+Ed Hardy shirt=double fail

aintitcoolnews has an update on this topic from the mouth of Cameron himself. not true at all
  • frelling_cute
Hope Jaimie Lee and Eliza Dushku return.

Tom Arnold is hilarious and under-used in my opinion. The team of him and Arnie was awesome though and Im glad they were chosen to work together. Id love to see a new one! Pity Jamie Lee Curtis is that little bit too old for another awesome stripper dance though.

personally I believe it. Wouldn't it seem fitting for Cameron to say he was a liar? They are making 'True Lies'. I would think Cameron would want to make a fun movie after pouring so much of himself into his current one. Let alone be excited to work with Arnold again. Yes, I believe it will happen.
