Netflix Streaming on Xbox 360

Of all the major television networks, ABC and CBS have been the most reluctant to get their streaming content outside of their own websites. But while CBS seems content to stay in their own playground, Disney has been taking active steps to bring ABC content to a wider online audience. A  few months ago they became an equal partner in Hulu (joining  Fox and NBC), and today Disney announced that they will be streaming selected content from popular ABC series on Netflix.

From the press release:

In its entirety, the deal will allow Netflix members to instantly watch the first five seasons of the hit ABC franchise Lost, seasons four and five of the pop culture phenomenon Desperate Housewives, season five of the critically acclaimed Grey’s Anatomy, and seasons one and two of the syndicated epic action-adventure fantasy series Legend of the Seeker from ABC Studios. Many of the episodes, including the first four seasons of Lost, will be available from Netflix beginning August 1. The remainder will be available in subsequent months, beginning in September.

While this deal won’t mean much for new episodes, it’s a boon for those who need to catch up on Lost and Legend of the Seeker (Guess which is much more tempting than the other). And while it’s seemingly a small step for ABC, it forces the other networks to consider doing the same for their popular series. It’s yet another step towards making content readily available online.

While the interface could use some work, I appreciate how easy it is to get Netflix streaming content to my television. Without it, I would have never seen the excellent first season of Party Down, which had new episodes available for streaming as the series aired. I can only hope that the big networks get over their fears of having Hulu content available on our TVs as well.

Discuss: Will you be taking advantage of these new series on Netflix Watch Instantly? Have you discovered new series just because they’re available for streaming online?

Yeah. Party Down. Thanks to you guys (/filmcast), actually. Oh, and Avatar: The Last Airbender, season one. I'm now in love with both shows and will definitely buy the dvds.

re: Discuss - Yes & Yes. Discovered lots of great TV/Movies via the flix including Party Down and will definitely be catching up on LOST (I gave up in S4 when I had to start watching week to week... it killed the show for me)
  • thank the gods. abc's interface was so annoying. i've been watching lost for the first time and having to click "play" after every commercial break got old real fast.

You can enable auto-resume in the Settings at the top of the video player page. It's really easy to do. Auto-resumes to full-screen after 30 seconds, even if the commercial is still going.

Absolutely love netflix streaming. Party Down is the prime example... I did the same thing with Dexter a year a half ago, and love having 30-Rock, the Office, and other TV to stream. Not to mention a host of movies. Keep on acquiring Netflix!

I was really excited when I saw these last night. I've been wanting to get into Lost for a long time and the more I waited, the harder it seemed to get caught up.
  • Just started watching Season 1 of Lost. Can't believe I missed this show before.

yeah same here man. watched like 4 straight episodes and now i'm addicted

Welcome to the cult of lost. I think watching the episodes in big chunks continuously is a lot more enjoyable personally. I didn't start watching till after season 1 and 2 aired. The show has it bumps and problems along the way - but it is much easier to get past that when you aren't waiting week to week.

This is great news! My wife and I are working our way through Lost, watching it streaming on ABC's site. They just removed seasons 2-4 from their streaming site, and this was probably the reason why. I'm just glad I can watch the show online again instead of having to find dvds.

Exactly. Should we really be applauding a move that makes you pay a monthly fee for content that we had been getting for free for quite a while up until now? Also, it was in HD on ABC's site. I don't believe Netflix Instant is.

Lost is in fact streaming instantly on netfilx in HD but you can watch it on your big screen TV with surround sound instead of sitting at a computer monitor like on ABC.com.

Plus a lot of us are already members of netflix, so we'd be paying for it regardless of if Lost was on there or not. That's why a lot of us are glad it is.
  • This may actually get me into Lost. I tend to watch my TV shows on a lagged schedule, preferring to watch whole seasons at my leisure, be them on DVD or streaming. I know Lost is a big show with a lot to cover, and until now I'd been hesitant to buy into any of the DVDs. But this? Ehhh, this might just make it make the list.
  • if it wasn't for netflix i probably wouldn't watch weeds.

this is sort of bitter sweet, being as I JUST got done getting caught up in Lost by renting season 1-4 on DVD one disk at a time from netflix because i don't like watching TV on my computer from their website. but I'm glad season five is also going to be available instant because i can steam that to my TV and i still have not seen season five and it is driving me crazy!

The first day season five is available I will probably watch the whole season in one sitting.

You betcha I will. I got hooked on Weeds 'cos of Instant Watch, and now I plan to catch up on LOST. excellent news, thanks.

Lost season 1 is on Hulu - as of today I believe. I think they're going to roll out the rest of the seasons over time.
  • Yeah, the Netflix Instant Watch is amazing. Being able to stream movies directly into my television with the use of my XBOX 360, or doing so directly onto my computer has been a blessing when I've reached the highest amount of movies out at a time, and am not in the mood for what I currently have out. It's also great for when I have friends over who want to watch something which I can just pop from out of nowhere onto my T.V.

As for discovering new series thanks to online streaming? Definitely, I can't keep up with series on the television it's much too difficult, with Hulu I can effectively see everything and even just queue it up for later viewing if I don't have time to do so at the moment that I'm browsing.

On hulu I've discovered series like Mental, Warehouse, and Royal Pains. Three shows which are my favorites right now, without these I don't know where I'd be.
