cliffhanger dekker

Back in May, StudioCanal announced that they would be teaming with Neal Moritz’s Original Films to reboot Cliffhanger. At the time, not much was known about the project aside from the fact that it would be big budget and would center on a group of young climbers on “multiple cliff-face locations.” At the time, Moritz said that they were searching for a screenwriter, and hoping to begin production in 2010.

Our friends at FirstShowing might have come across a scoop regarding the film’s scribe. While attending a Santa Monica screening of The Monster Squad, director Fred Dekker revealed that he is “currently writing Cliffhanger 2.” It is interesting that he referred to the project as “Cliffhanger 2″ and not a remake or reboot of Cliffhanger. Is it possible that the story has Sylvester Stallone set to return as Gabe Walker? Or are we reading too much into a quick comment. Probably the latter.

But the even more surprising part is that Dekker’s last screenwriting credit was for Robocop 3 in 1993. Dekker’s filmography also includes House, If Looks Could Kill, and Ricochet, all of which he wrote, as well as Night at the Creeps, The Monster Squad, and Robocop 3, for which he wrote and directed.

I just hope that the reboot (or sequel?) won’t employ a lot of greenscreens and computer generated action sequences, as the location danger was one of the reasons people connected with the original. The original film i best known for the mountain-set stunts and breathtaking scenes which were filmed on Italy’s Cortina d’Ampezzo. To this day, the film still holds the record for the most costliest aerial stunt ever performed in a movie, as listed in the Guinness Book of World Records. Stuntman Simon Crane was paid $1 million to cross between two planes at an altitude of 15,000 feet.

Why would they even want to remake/reboot a film that isn't all that old. Also the film really isn't part of a franchise to cause it to need a reboot. I liked Cliffhanger and wouldn't mind seeing a sequel.
  • Gelman
The original was kinda cheezy. The chick from Northern Exposure -- current pharmaceutical pimp -- was laughable at times. And the John Lithgow as the bad guy just made it so 90s.

There's only so much climbing around on mountains one can watch...

... BUT WHAT IF IT WAS 3-D? That might actually be cool: Stallone hanging from a zip line right in your face, a huge cavern, big cliffs, a helicopter flying in front of you.

Okay, maybe I'm sold. But only in 3-D.
  • Fir3Wolf
Yes the movie was kinda cheezy but that didn't stop me from liking it any less. I mean it was the 90's and just one of many 90's action flicks to come out then. So for the time the movie was not horrible, but if they do make another one hopefully they leave out a lot of the cheese.

There will be plenty of Provolone if Stallone is involved.

fred dekker needs more work. the man is uber talented. great genre filmmaker.

Monster Squad is terrible and the original Cliffhanger is pretty weak. This will be nothing but a disaster.
  • plagueoftruth
Monster Squad rules. You have no taste.
  • JPX
The fact that you believe Monster Squad "rules" reveals who truly has no taste. I imagine you probably also like Nascar, guns, Elvis and lottery tickets. Did you go to college? No? I didn't think so.
  • plagueoftruth
LOL. Is 'Monster Squad' suddenly some redneck sensation that I wasn't aware of.

I do like Elvis though. Should I be worried?
  • plagueoftruth
    Sorry. Typo.
    "...suddenly aware of?"

Wouldn't want my uneducated roots to show.
  • plagueoftruth
Seriously, dude. Watch 'Monster Squad' again. It really does rule.
I was just messing with you on the taste thing. I have no more knowledge of your film taste than you have of my education or how films which haven't even been written yet will be "nothing but a disaster."
  • Flax
Yeah Monster Squad is sick he should make a sequel to that. Fuck Cliffhanger.
  • Octoberist
WTF? How is Monster Squad terrible?
  • Octoberist
Not to be mean. It's just that you probably didn't realized that Monster Squad has such a cult following. It's almost like blowing off Evil Dead 2 or Night of the Creeps as bad movies. In theory they are (hence the term 'cult classic'), but they are beloved by many geeks. Like me.
  • plagueoftruth
    Word.
  • Yeesh. Robocop 3 AND Monster Squad. Not looking great...

I guess I understand why they would want to piggyback on Cliffhanger. ANYTHING with name recognition is going to help at this point...
  • Cliffhanger was one of my first action movies, i think I was 8 oder 9 as I saw it at my grandparents house, uncut. I still love it, one of the best movies with Stallone!

Let me summarize my objective view of this topic:

Cliffhanger 2 with Sly - YES! Do it!
Cliffhanger 2 without Sly - NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

This guy called my rock climbing gym today asking if he could come by and learn a few things about climbing to make the script more realistic. The manager just brushed him off, told him he could come by if he likes, but in the end he should just rent some climbing videos.
  • plagueoftruth
Forget this. I want a sequel to 'Monster Squad.'

This is an asinine idea as the action-film audience target demographic doesn't remember the movie at all, much less fondly.

But the real joke is that Fred Dekker is actually even claiming to be 'writing' this. Michael France, who was an executive (a 'suit') at Carolco, which made the first film, was found by the courts (and then, subsequently, the WGA,) to have wholly and completely stolen the script from a struggling writer, and France had submitted the script as his own work. They settled it and kept it low-profile by paying off the actual writer, but France has been a blackened-name in the business since.

I'm sure that this history won't affect the film-going public in the least, but I won't be supporting the executive-thieves on this project with dime one of my money. They're jackals.

Jeez! Really? Do we really need another one of these? Hey, can we reboot Collateral Damage next?
  • CyT
Then can we please reboot the Sixth Sense?
  • probot
Oh and I thought Frank Miller wrote Robocop 3? Unless this clown re-wrote it.
