The New Mad Max: Jeremy Renner?

renner_mad_max

Go see The Hurt Locker and try not to emerge as a big fan of Jeremy Renner; I’d say that’s close to impossible. Then read his comments to his hometown paper (The Modesto Bee, via AICN) about one project he’s trying to move forward. “I’m also fighting to do the new Mad Max film with George Miller. That might be next summer. I’m screen-testing and meeting George Miller.” I got really excited reading that. Suddenly the idea of a new Mad Max movie seems a lot more tantalizing.

But are we actually going to see the project happen? A fourth film has been a possibility for a long time, with it almost going forward prior to the 2003 Iraq war, then being scrapped when that conflict made simple stuff like shipping cars and people to Australia a more difficult and expensive proposition. George Miller has said more than once in the past year that the project is still creeping forward, and his last note was that Mel Gibson is still definitely out and that the movie would happen as an R-rated 3D animated project. But if Renner is auditioning, that implies a live-action movie. Would this be the old Mad Max: Fury Road script, or something new? Right now, we don’t know.

Before this goes anywhere, Renner will take a supporting role in Ben Affleck’s new film The Town. All this noise around the actor is making me want to revisit his work in Asia Argento’s The Heart is Deceitful Above All Things (a movie I generally hated, to the degree I only vaguely remember Renner) and his Jeffrey Dahmer performance in Dahmer.

Meanwhile, what’s going on with the Mad Max game that was in development? God of War game director Cory Balrog was working on it, taking meetings with George Miller at the beginning of this year. In April a blog post said he’d moved to San Francisco to start an exciting gig that should keep him busy for a while. Is that Mad Max, or has that been back-burnered?

I'm tired of remakes. Can't they just do an original story? I know branding does sell tickets, but come on!
  • I tend to lean the same way but man, Jeremy Renner may be in a franchise that has needed to be back in a bad way. This is good news..
  • Yeah, I can't say I'm a fan of remakes/reboots either, but if they HAVE to bring back Mad Max, I can't really find anything wrong with this casting decision...

I am actually becoming a bigger and bigger fan of Renner and always wanted another Mad Max sooooo...Hazaa!

I'd skip the Argento and if you haven't already, watch him in The Assassination of Jesse James or The Unusuals.

I'm a big fan of Renner already and also wanted another Mad Max movie. I think he has what it takes to be the new Mad Max and hopefully, if they do go through with it, it helps get rid of the horrible memories left by the third MM movie.

when I was a kid I saw him in National Lampoons Senior Trip and thought Renner was the only good thing in it but as acting goes not much in it. After seeing Hurt Locker, I am now a fan.

honestly i think this guy should be the next captain america in the new captain america movie.
  • he is so ugly
  • Mel Gibson's gotta at least cameo in Mad Max 4! That would be a treat. Unlikely, I know, but it's a nice thought. No doubts whatsoever that Renner could portray a decent Max in a prequel/sequel/reboot/remake. Only... what's the point?

I agree with zombie_skool, I saw Senior Trip years ago ("Let's do some Van Damage!"), and thought he was the bright spot of that movie.

I have been surprised he has not had bigger roles yet.

He's only a lightweight actor, in a sea of millions.
That doesnt mean he's not bad or good but again there is a lot of talent out there vying for work.
I personally think he does not have what's required to be Mad Max, not due to not being an Aussie, as Gibson isn't either, he just doesnt seem to have that "quality" about him and Gibson is actually a classically trained actor.
    Renner is not.

Renner is the man. I haven't seen 'The Hurt Locker' yet but he was great in both 'S.W.A.T' and '28 Weeks Later.' I can definitely see him taking over as Max Rockatansky.
  • I loved Renner in 28 Weeks Later and The Hurt Locker. So, why not?

    Why do this. WHY

Well, if Jeremy Renner is on board then I am down with a remake. I feel enough time has passed that a remake is ok. I have seen the movie dozens of times since it was released and a fresh and hopefully good remake will renew my interest in the franchise.

I try and forget about Thunderdome, they should have stopped instead of putting out that corny crap. That was a blemish on the franchise, it deserves some renewed interest.

I don't care what he's doing, as long as he's doing something. All I know is that, after TAOJJ and The Hurt Locker, I want to see this guy in a ton more movies. He's an unique talent. Give him an action remake, give him Shakespeare, give him a Kevin James comedy- but give him SOMETHING that makes people everywhere notice him.
  • Sketch
He was also in 12 and Holding as a psychologically imbalanced construction worker.

there are a lot of movies that should be remade. in time... and this is not one of those. we're not ready for this.

Jeremy Renner is not and will not be Mad Max!!!
Why does he, or perhaps people on his behalf (?), say he is the best choice?
What happened to the earlier reports that Aussie actor Steve Innes had already been cast as Max.
I recall on YouTube Innes had a video posted of his audition and screentest scenes and they were awesome - He actually arrived on camera in his own black Interecptor Coupe, just like in the movie.
He looked a lot like Max, except older.

I wonder if this is the same Steven Innes cast in the new Dune movie by Peter Berg.
Not sure if this guy is Aussie though, and the photo is saw in Who looks to be an older man.
  • kgas
No matter how good an actor is, rarely can any non australian pull off the accent. americans usuallly embarrassing themselves when attempting.

This role should go to a rising aussie star
  • Vodka Guzzler.
That's actually a really sensible comment.
Apart from some Brits who almost always have a family or social connection with Australia and can pull of a pretty decent accent the only American I've ever heard properly sound like an Aussie is Mel Gibson himself, having lived here for over 25 years in all.
I actually doubt he's had the opportunity or inclination to use his Aussie accent since as he's never returned.
Robert Downey Jnr wasn't too bad as an Aussie reporter in Natural Born Killers but still too young to be a timeline-accurate Max.
This Steven Innes guy everyone keeps mentioning as the one cast as Max I'm not sure about as he's even younger than R.D.Jr and im not really familiar with him.
Perhaps that'll change but at least he's a real Aussie and up and coming and that's what's needed here.
