Big Fan

First Independent Pictures has supplied us with an exclusive clip from Big Fan, the feature directorial debut of Robert Siegel, screenwriter of Darren Aronofsky’s The Wrestler and former editor of The Onion. You probably know the film better as the Patton Oswalt obsessed football fan movie. As I have warned previously, this film is not a comedy, but instead a character study. If you know that going in, you’ll be a lot better off. Watch the clip after the jump.

The clip below needs a little bit of set-up, which you can get from reading the official plot synopsis below:

Paul Aufiero (PATTON OSWALT), a 35-year-old parking garage attendant from Staten Island, is the self-described “world’s biggest New York Giants fan.” He lives at home with his mother (MARCIA JEAN KURTZ), spending his off hours calling in to local sports-radio station 760 The Zone, where he rants in support of his beloved team, often against his mysterious on-air rival, Eagles fan Philadelphia Phil (MICHAEL RAPAPORT). His family berates him for doing nothing with his life, but they don’t understand the depth of his love of the Giants or the responsibility his fandom carries. One night, Paul and his best friend Sal (KEVIN CORRIGAN) spot Giants star linebacker Quantrell Bishop (JONATHAN HAMM) at a gas station in their neighborhood. They impulsively follow his limo into Manhattan, to a strip club, where they hang in the background, agog at their hero. Paul cautiously decides to approach him, stepping into the rarefied air of football stardom — and things do not go as planned. The fallout of this chance encounter brings Paul’s world crashing down around him as his family, the team, the media and the authorities engage in a tug of war over Paul, testing his allegiances and calling into question everything he believes in. Meanwhile, the Giants march toward a late-season showdown with the Eagles, unaware that sometimes the most brutal struggles take place far from the field of play.

The clip below takes place right after the incident Giants star linebacker Quantrell Bishop, with Paul being questioned by the police detective after he is released from the hospital. Enjoy.

Big Fan hits theaters starting on August 28th.

looks great, makes me want to see more and more.

Oswalt does a great job playing the obsessed fan not trying to betray "his team."

huh...I'd kinda been avoiding this cause I was under the assumption that is was going to be a dumb comedy. This changes things quite a bit. Shame on me for not paying attention.

*edit* Then I watched the trailer...blown away. Patton Oswalt? Really? Wow...

This is a really, really solid movie. It's a pure indie, made for no money and just driven by talent. It's the sort of thing people always talk about wanting when they bitch about Hollywood product.
  • HEIL HERZOG

  • I absolutely love Patton Oswalt - I cannot wait for this film...

These guys are both really good. Oswalt's such a likable guy that this scene fills me with compassion for him. He looks like he's truly been knocked around, and Patton does not read as a man who can take care of himself.

Plus, I truly hate football and football players. Some of the worst behaved pricks in the public spotlight, next to baseball and basketball players. Not all of them, but many of them, and they make it easy to dislike the rest. The fan devotion of Oswalt's character makes me even more likely to empathize with him.

Plus, I have to say I really loved The Wrestler. This will be worth seeing.
  • I love the quote from the L.A times "Exceptional". It's like a prostitute saying she "does the job" in bed.
