Fantastic Mr. Fox Movie Trailer

fantastic-fox-steal_

I’d hoped that when I saw the trailer for Wes Anderson’s Fantastic Mr. Fox, which debuted today at Yahoo, any doubts I had based on early stills would immediately evaporate. Instead, they’ve deepened. There are great little moments in here, mostly through dialogue, but the animation doesn’t have me convinced. It looks very flat, like Wes Anderson’s trademark dead-on framing has finally betrayed him. (On the other hand, the character designs look just like drawings by Anderson’s brother, which must finally be a family aspiration brought to fruition.) That sense of creepy ’60s/’70s television animation hasn’t gone away, and the whole clip has a feeling of disconnection. See for yourself after the break.

The framing and composition is so flat, in fact, that at times I thought of video games while watching this trailer; probably the last thing Wes Anderson wants me to think. (Specifically, it was Rolling Thunder that came to mind.) I really hope that, when viewed all of a piece, the animation and framing work for the story. But right now I don’t see it, and that’s a drag.

Meanwhile, the other day I mentioned that the film would premiere at the BFI London Film Festival (instead of at Venice, to which Fox Searchlight had reportedly applied, or TIFF) and wondered if that meant the movie wasn’t any good. Fox Searchlight contacted The Playlist and said it was the studio that passed on Venice, TIFF and the offered opening night at the New York Film Festival in favor of the the London premiere. The film is the product of a British novel and the film was shot in London, so the UK premiere made the most sense. Good enough, then.

Fantastic Mr. Fox is based on the book of the same name by Roald Dahl and features the voice work of George Clooney, Meryl Streep, Jason Schwartzman, Bill Murray and others. It opens on November 13.

Watch the trailer in High Definition on Yahoo.

  • 'From the author of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory'!? So now they can't even put Roald Dahl's name in trailers, because people may not know who he is? What is society coming to!?

i met wes anderson in london and he was wearing the same brown velour suit as mr. fox in this trailer. is that weird creepy or fantastic?

Come on, Russ...you were one of my favorite /Film bloggers 'til now, man. This looks amazing! Have you not seen any of those old, crappy claymation/stop-motion programs from the 60's/70's? For example, Gumby?

You gotta remember that Wes Anderson has a specific style of mise en scene which he utilizes with great effect...not to mention, he's always looking for flaws in his characters and their environments.

At first I was taken aback by the animation style, but as the trailer went on I was reminded of the charm of earlier stop-motion works, especially Wallace and Grommett, and to an extent even the old Rudolph Christmas movies, all of which would be a very Wes Anderson-y style to pay tribute. It comes as shock at first, I think, because we're spoiled by the super-smooth Tim Burton stop-motions. I am biased, being an immense Wes fan, but I like to think he's taking a risk and paying tribute to the roots of stop animation. Whether or not it works, we'll have to see, but I'm optimistic.
  • If it's set in England, and it's by an British author, why would Wes Anderson cast Americans in the parts? Does anyone else find that a bit... well, stupid? Also, it looks terrible. Like a taxidermy collection brought back to life. I like stop-motion animation films, but the character's faces in this just aren't expressive enough. It would have been better if they had gone with 2d or computer graphics.

The animation looks jerky like "Robot Chicken." Not what I was hoping for!
  • quintushalls
The animation is too distracting for me to enjoy it. There are too many pauses and too many skips. For stop-motion, Mr. Fox is terrible.
  • Herizon
first 12ish second of the trailer I was disappointed, then I immediately wasn't for the rest of the trailer. Then I watched it again, and I liked the whole thing. End of story.
  • KingCarlos
And what an interesting story it was.

Your comment should be a quote on the poster.
  • KingCarlos
This looks HORRENDOUS! "Flat" is the understatement of the century.

Wes Anderson's style + stop-motion animation + a children's story was always going to result in failure. There's no way that Anderson's directorial methods could ever translate into an action-packed comedy for children. Very disappointing, I love the book.

This will bomb like no other film has bombed before.

    Everyone LOVES hyperboles.
  • bobsolo
I also don't like the animation. Someone mentioned Robot Chicken and I totally agree. And none of the voices fit. The audio is crisp, clear studio recorded and the animation just looks thrown together. Maybe someone will buy the rights and reanimate it to match the awesome voice cast.
  • Guest
    I'm sorry but it looks like a low-budget straight-to-dvd.

Also, Bill Murray's voice doesn't seem to fit.
  • LuMendz
This looks great! I love the animation! The voices are ok though. Can't wait for this to come out already!
  • The only thing that was not so fantastic was hearing Bono after the trailer.
  • MrWoofy
The animation definitely grew on me after a few viewings.
  • erictvoigt
Next time you say something ridiculously unfounded about Fantastic Mr. Fox I'm gonna scream.
  • Fir3Wolf
I don't know what I expected the movie to look like, but I'm digging the stop motion that it has going on. I'll see it.

"That sense of creepy ’60s/’70s television animation hasn’t gone away"
ummm... have you seen a Wes Anderson movie. Of course it looks that way. It's not like he went cheap and got crappy animators to make his movie. It has always been his intention for the film to look like that, he's been describing it that way for years. Wes Anderson didn't become a fan of stop-motion through the Nightmare Before Christmas, after all...
  • Looks Fantastic!
  • It's simple. Nothing about this movie lends itself to the stop-motion photography
  • Itri12
Good. I hope people hate it. This is a film I can love while no one else does. It can be my little treasure. Too bad for the haters.
  • Wes Anderson gets a free pass for sub-par animation because it's "intentional"....didn't M.Night say that The Happening was "intentionally" cheesy?
  • bomberman
no, M. Night Shawow knew what he was getting into
  • I love the look. I think the "dated" style is completely intentional, and it feels refreshing compared to contemporary, super slick computer animation. The look has a lot more charm and character than say "Corpse Bride." Go Wes go!
  • Saladinho
I agree. Wes has a strong aesthetic, and like someone else has posted, I doubt he just went out and hired cheap animators to put any ole thing out: I think it's meant to be very clumsy and child like. Alot like his brother Eric's artwork. The guy's what, 40 years old? He's clearly hearkening back to a more innocent time in stop-motion animation from his youth. Whenever you hear him talk about film, it's always stuff from the 70s and Europe anyway, that's just his thing.
  • Rabstown
Russ I really don't know what your deal is. This looks...FANTASTIC! Get it? No seriously, it looks funny, cute, charming and the "framing and composition" look fine. It's something different and unique. Get over yourself.
  • Dan Berry
I hope people don't critique the techniques of the animation too much. I love the way its heading. Nice to see something I haven't seen before.
  • iamTristan
I love how it looks like it's embracing the stopmotion feel and not trying to hide it like Coraline did (even though that film was amazing, it was maybe too polished).

I don't usually like Wes Anderson films (only seen two though), but this looks interesting, but weird. Very weird.
  • freemachine
This makes G-Force look like an Oscar contender...
  • MarkoP
    Have you actually seen G-Force?
  • freemachine
No I haven't, but do I really need to? You know what to expect from G-Force...crap! Now Wes Anderson I have more expectations from. Then this trailer comes along and I'm like, "Whoa", this looks worse than his last two films...and worse than the trailer for G-Force. I think Wes has had it. He's pulling an M. Night on us. Too bad.
  • RosanatorDA
are you implying his last two films were bad?
  • Keith
    Demolitions expert.

    Since when?

    This looks hilarious.
  • jubblydoobly
    AHHHHH MAN!

I've watched this three times and WOW. I laughed every single time just as hard as the first. I'm sorry but do some of you (russ included) even have a soul?
  • TMorren
Actually, is that rat BIGGER than mr.fox?! how does that work?
  • tenno
I really like the throw back style to it, the voices being so recognizable is a little jarring but younger children probably won't notice or care. Curious to see how well it plays on generation used to modern CG. This looks like it would have been a favorite of mine growing up.
  • Beau
aw crap. When I heard about this I was really, really excited, but the stuff I'm seeing, watch caps on the animals, bouncy physicality, and what appeared to be a modern drug store or grocery store, is gonna wreck it for me. This was always a British piece of work to me, and I agree with the comment above that says it looks too Americanized. I think the animation style would have worked very well if they'd have just told the damn story as it was. le sigh.
  • The voice acting sounded good, but the animation dreadfully bugged me. I really don't know if kids will like this animation style...

Could easily be a flop to me...
  • Rockie
    loved what i saw
  • I agree, I think it looks really sketchy. The animation isn't bad, it's the character designs, they're kinda... eh. Too realistic for Stop motion. the constant movement of the fur is weird, and the lack of expression is odd. But maybe that's because we've all come to expect Henry Selick styles of over expression with stop motion. VOice acting sounds great though!
  • wazuu
I guess I wasn't doing my homework, the whole time I thought this was going to be a live action movie with the fox animated.
  • Troy
This looks great! Like that the actors are underplaying the voices instead of overdoing it, it adds to the charm. The jerky animation reminds me of the great old Wind In The Willows show on PBS.
  • I think it looks awesome, but I say that about anything Wes does.
  • pic_czar
i didnt like anything i had seen prior. all the production stills had me worried... then i watched the trailer. now i'm super excited. the movie looks awesome.
  • Electro_Jones
It reminds me of some sixties-era Russian stopmo animation that I've seen and loved. Also, a lot of British animation of similar vintage. I can't wait to see this.

And it looks funny too! Something kids' movies rarely are these days.
  • yeah i agree with one of the comments below, reminded me a bit of robot chicken. but this movie still looks awesome!
  • drbenway59
    Hello Russ,

It's "Fantastic Mr. Fox". Not "The Fantastic Mr. Fox".

    Best,
