District 9 Promotional Trailer

District 9

When I saw a sneak preview screening of District 9 during Comic-Con, Sony asked journalists to lay off the plot details in reaction pieces. Peter Jackson even explained on stage to the crowd of mostly non-journalists, to talk and blog about the film, but to not ruin any of the story points not revealed in the trailers and tv spots. Well, Sony doesn’t have to worry about me, or the two guys who were sitting next to me in that dark theater on Thursday night, as we ruined nothing. But they may want to consult someone over at the trailer house which cut this promotional trailer for the film, because it pretty much gives away almost everything (and what it holds back on, or only hints towards, the officially-released production photos gave away long ago).

I’m posting it because 1. It was officially released by the studio, so obviously they think people will see the film after viewing it AND 2. Because I know there are people reading this site now that want to see it regardless of how much plot it may ruin. Bottom line is that District 9 is a good film, and you’ll probably enjoy it even if you watch the video below. But some of you might want to keep the viewing experience pure, and go in knowing less. For those of you, you have been sufficiently warned. Enjoy.

Thanks to /Film reader Zach L for the tip.

  • I just saw the pre-screening of District 9 last night in NYC, and Neil Blomkamp said the same thing to us - Please, if possible, don't let any of the various plot points leak out all over the interwebs. I have to say, that I loved this movie, and that going into it with very little knowledge helped the film a bit in my eyes. I'm guilty of trolling for information on movies before they even come out so that I'm in the know of what's going on in the movie and what will happen so that I don't miss a thing. But, as much as I like learning what I can about a movie beforehand, it was refreshing to go into this movie "cold," if you will. I can't watch the video (work computer can't handle streaming media), but I'd urge you to not watch it if you decided to read the comments first. The "twist", for lack of a better word, is definitely worth waiting for. Hell, the entire movie is worth waiting for, it truly was an amazing film.

Thanks for your warning, Greg. I'm having surgery on the 14th, so I have no idea how I can see D-9 unspoiled without leaving the internet, but considering I spoiled Cloverfield for myself literally an hour before I left for the theater...

hahaha i did the same thing. i couldn't resist i youtube'd the video where the moster eats the camera man lol.
  • K3V0N3
    wow amazing!

I started watching it on youtube earlier and was kinda pissed it gave away so much of the plot. Within about 30 seconds I had to close it. Its supposed to be a trailer not a summary of the plot which is what it was.

i saw this in front of ROTF in imax. it was an amc first look.

Why would you put something up and say here it is but dont watch it cause it will spoil possibly the best movie of the summer? What the hell is wrong with u? For all the good stuff you guys put together on this website, you guys really know how to ruin things. I wont be watching this as i think no one else should and this should be taken down. You guys are really a bunch of Clams!
  • Why put up anything? Because there are people who want to see it and Sony officially released it. If either one of those facts were not true, we wouldn't have posted it.
  • wazuu
Dude this totally didn't give away anything you didn't already know from the trailers, and chicken fingers your a douche.

OMG! This looks so fucking awesome!!! This probably the first sci-fi film since "A Scanner Darkly" to carry any significant social and philosophic weight. I can't wait.
  • krackajap
A Scanner Darkly was a horribly underrated film.

I watched the trailer, and while I've been keeping up on District 9, I don't think it gave away much more than we already knew. I think it's safe to watch if you've been following the film on a basic level, but if you don't want to know anything, then clearly you should avoid this (as well as the other trailers).

Suffice it to say, I'm still looking forward to this. Apart from Up, District 9 is the only summer movie that interested me this year.

Some people seem to be overreacting a tad bit here. I was going to see this anyway so I didn't see the harm in watching it; I don't think there was anything given away by this that I hadn't already understood from watching the other trailers and reading stories here on /Film. Correction - there was one very small detail that I didn't know prior but it has in no way changed anything for me.

If the people responsible for cutting together this trailer were to stop their mistakes, they should have done so on the previous ones they released.

I'm astonished that anyone thinks this gives away too much. What it does "reveal" isn't much more than any idiot could easily theorize about a premise like this. Much ado about nothing, I'm afraid.

Hm, I'm wondering if there will be any stupid scenes in this movie, like a sex scene. It's shown that he's with a girl and, well, we all know a movie isn't a movie nowadays without a scene like that. It looks like an amazing movie and I'm so pumped to see it but what I don't want are stupid useless scenes like, as I said, a sex scene. Does anyone know if there is/think there will be? I want to know before I decide to go see it, and sometimes it takes a while for IMDB to get someone to write in the "Parent's Guide" thing and I really don't wannna wait a few weeks after it's out to go see it.
  • I feel like this won't ruin anything - Nope, no sex scene.
  • Thanks for the heads up, not going to watch it.
  • dsahawker
Thank you for the heads up...staying far away from this. Just hope I don't accidentally catch anything on the web or TV
  • justrobby
Tempted to watch, but i hate spoilers..
  • Just got back from a screening in Perth, Australia and I have to say the film is far different than what was alluded to in the promotional materials ... until now. Why would the studio screw the pooch so close to release? Advice to all - keep yourself as fresh as possible and try to go into District 9 with as little info as possible. Also, I hope you like decapitations, cos boy has this film got 'em.

I couldn't help it. I watched the trailer and spoiled myself. It's just so tempting to not watch! I'll still be seeing it, but this sorta ruined the surprise for me.
  • Levi Miller
    Potential Spoiler, I guess.

So there is a shot near the end of that trailer that shows Wikus (sp?) lying on the ground with his wife kneeling next to him. After seeing the movie yesterday it's safe to assume that he would have been imagining that. Deleted scene then?
