The Dark Knight

During the Book of Eli presentation at Comic-Con 2009, Gary Oldman was asked when we would be seeing a third Batman movie. I, like many others, were expecting the standard answer “we’re waiting on Chris…” But we got something else entirely. According to Oldman, a sequel to The Dark Knight is not only happening, but it begins shooting in 2010.

“The next batman is next year, so I think it is two years away. But you didn’t hear it from me.”

It didn’t appear that Oldman was joking, nor did it appear that he was speculating. As far as we know, Christopher Nolan has yet to commit to a third film. We’ll keep you updated.

  • Thats a fast turnaround for Nolan. Could this mean he's not the one doing it.
  • I am not sure why you think this is a fast turn around. How about we wait and get more details before floating that Nolan might not be back...just wait and see.
  • Bull
It is not really that quick of a turnaround for him at all.
  • Hope this is true, and hope Nolan is doing it, otherwise there is no point. Inception should be done by that time?
  • I love Oldman, but if he is lying I will never watch a movie of his again.
  • Wow. Overreacting, much?
  • yes. yes i am.
  • daveshere
fun fact: Heath Ledger seems to have watch Leon so many times that he stole Oldman's crazy guy impression for the Joker. Don't believe me? Rewatch the professional.

Im hoping it is true, but I don't know really if its just a way to start some fake news
  • Guest
im not taking Gary Oldman comment serious at all right now until i hear WB say something or Chris Nolan. alot of actor alway say there is going to be a sequel to a movie but sometimes it never happen

i know this is some news but i dont think this is really important until we hear proper news about if Nolan is doing the sequel or not
  • mayroth
come on, Nolan. You've got to come back. Don't make this like the last trilogy. Continue to make these films, they're nothing without you.
  • Justin
nolan: "I don't know if I'm ready to do another movie of this scale."

WB: "How does 25 million sound?"

nolan: "inception should be wrapped up around June, we can start then."
  • jdchristensen
Why is there a picture of Aaron Eckhart for this Gary Oldman article?
  • Who Ha
I couldn't begin to speculate, but I hope they don't fix it. It's hilarious.
  • THAT'S NOT GARY?!

    ;-)
  • theAguilar
I'm pretty sure that's the standard picture for any Batman news at /Film. Maybe it represents that things are looking up for the franchise.

Yeah, it's pretty funny though. I like it.
  • Michael_C
Yeah, I'm pretty sure this isn't happening. If he's right that means Nolan isn't coming back.
  • if Christopher Nolan isnt directing im not even following the news about the third film.
  • EvanJDeBiase
Ya, you are because you just wrote a comment on this here WALL.

I have a feeling that this rumor could make one of the legitimate sources in the equation speak out.
  • mchops
Announcement means nothing if Nolan isn't involved.
  • This does not mean Nolan is not involved. Keep in mind, Michael Caine is also in Inception. There is no way that the series will lose both of them.
  • yungl1nk
Very interesting. I personally don't wanna c a sequel to TDK. It's like trying to capture lightning in a bottle. Even with Chris Nolan who is simply amazing I don't think it can be done. I don't think it's ever been done! Has a third film in a franchise been a legitimately good film? Even more, top an amazing second installment?
  • Back to the Future.

    ...

    Lord of the Rings

    ...

    Evil Dead?
  • yungl1nk
    *Clear throat nervously
    please forgive my ignorance
(how the he'll did I forget LOTR:ROTK aka my favorite movie of all time!)
  • You're forgiven. :-)
  • phil
Thank you for giving BTTF Part 3 the love it deserves.
  • Bull
Isn't the third Back to the Future the one set in the wild west? That movie sucked.

But I agree with your other picks.
  • Zinc
Wrong, it was pretty good. Maye not AS GOOD, but still very good as far as trilogies go. But yeah, RotK was amazing.
  • jspegele
All 3 LOTR films were shot at the same time, based on pre-existing material, and didn't lose one of its stars after the second film. This is a very different situation.
  • thrillhouse
Yes, I too do not count RotK as the third entry in a trilogy. It was really all filmed as one movie...anything but consistent quality would have been darn near impossible.
  • Eh, to be honest, so do I. I just got lazy coming up with trilogies.

Two out of three ain't bad. ;-)
  • MovieLover
It can be done. ROCKY III. It depends on if they want to take it serious as the first two
  • BTTF 3 was pretty... not good. Not good at all.
  • quintushalls
Back to the Future and Lord of the Rings were both one story split over 3 films. Nolan's Batman, on the other hand, has been a different story each time.
  • Lord of the Rings, yes. But Back to the Future? The first movie was meant to be a standalone film, the "To Be Continued..." at the end was a gag. Studios came back and asked them to make sequels. They suffered changed/dropped actors, a segmented shooting schedule, and having to write new stories in a compressed amount of time. I mean, heck, one of the writers even said, if they knew they'd be writing a sequel, they wouldn't have included Jennifer in the end of the first one, since they then had to find a way to ditch her in the second one (the sleep-inducing thingy-ma-bobber subplot). They had production issues just like any other sequel.

The fact the story happened to pick up right where the other left off doesn't change that.

Besides, one could easily argue that, like Pirates of the Caribbean and Star Wars (original), the trilogy was really two stories split over three movies. The first of each of these movies more or less wrapped up each story, while the second was a more direct cliffhanger to the third.
  • quintushalls
Well, Back to the Future 2 re-used a lot of the footage from Back to the Future 1. I didn't know that it was a gag. I just assumed that the "To Be Continued" meant one continuous story. huh, the more you know.
  • DarthGiorgio
Its obvious, Peter and the Collider dude said it and they had the best theory ive heard since TDK came out...Nolan talked to Warners and wanted his next project to be a more personal project and hell give Goyer and Jonah a year to come up with the script, while hes in post on Inception hell start doing script revisions and shoot a month or two later...its kinda of obvious that hes using his Begins/Prestige/TDK timeline expect it will be TDK/Inception/Batman 3...well being seeing viral for Tom Hardy as the Black Mask in no time...I promise you...
  • theAguilar
This. Except for Tom Hardy as Black Mask, that's just being hopeful.
  • bcreek
This has me somewhat concerned that the studio might go ahead and make a new Batman movie without Nolan. While I am aware that it is more than possible to have a great Batman movie without Chris Nolan at the helm, I really would like to see the story conclude under his direction. Let's keep our fingers crossed that it will happen.
  • Lazar
nolan has the last word, if he isn't doing the third movie, fugde it
  • Zinc
Well who knows. None of the stars of the movie are really trustable (for example, Cane claiming who the villains would be). I can really only trust Bale since he never really says anything without it being true. But if this is true, YES NEXT BATMAN MOVIE WILL BE IN 2011!
  • Hmm, this might be true. I just checked Chris Nolan's IMDb-profile, he has an "Untitled Batman Project (2011)" going on. And if that is planned for 2011, the shooting will start next year.
  • thrillhouse
Yes, because IMDb is just as reliable as, say, Wikipedia.
  • daveshere
how DARE you besmerch the name of Wikipedia?!?!
  • I was at the Flash Forward panel today, and Jeff Jensen asked David S. Goyer about the next Batman flick...Goyer said they are still "musing" over the story, and made a joke about coming up with the lamest villian to use...he mentioned Bat-Mite. :) from they way he talked, it seemed that there is nothing certain yet, and they are still deciding on what the story should be.
  • This is going to be a great movie...!
  • crymetime33
Talking about third films that are good in recent memory
    Pirates 3
    harry potter 3(i assume)
    lor 3 (again assuming)
    beverly hills cop 3.......
and if anyone can bad mouth this i dare you too but the best third movie ever The Bourne Ultimatum so a great third movie can be done will be as great as tkd unless they get a performance like what heath leger did doubtfull but to be fair anything beats batman forever/batman and robin!
  • Nindie
What about The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, Goldfinger or The Last Crusade?

I think that The Return of the King is the best third movie and not Bourne Ultimatum. How can you mention Pirates 3 or Beverly Hills Cop 3 in the same breath as ROTK is beyond me!

    I just crapped me pants.
