District 9

Since Neil Blomkamp’s probably not going to be doing Halo as his next film, we were curious what he might be working on next. (see our full interview for all the details). Blomkamp revealed just a few tantalizing tidbits about his next project. Hit the jump to hear what he had to say.

Preparations for his next film have only recently begun. According to Blomkamp:

I’ve only very recently started thinking about that, cause I finished District 9 like a month ago…It’s like, 2 years of complete and utter dedication and then it just turns off like that.

As for what it would be:

I’ve got one science fiction idea that I’m absolutely in love with, which I’m pretty sure is going to be my next film. 99% sure…It’s totally original, it’s my own story…It’s set on another planet, but it’s cool. It’s violent, very violent, and very unique hopefully. We’ll see.

I've been following Blomkamp for a while now, ever since his short that inspired District 9. The short is awesome, D9 looks awesome and I'm looking forward to Blomkamps progression as a filmmaker. Excited to hear/see what it is.

surprised, and pleased to hear, that he'll be following up d9 with another sci-fi movie

Why does this surprise you? Every short film he's ever done has been sci-fi and most of his commercials involve robots in some form, so he's obviously a sci-fi nut. If he followed it up with a Jane Austen period piece, I'd be surprised.

i'm not familiar with his previous work, and assumed that a young director would want to avoid being pigeonholed
