Leave it to Joss Whedon to completely alter everything we’ve come to expect from a show within the course of a single episode. Dollhouse may have got off to a slow start, but if the ridiculously packed house at today’s Comic Con panel is any indication, I’m not the only one who thinks it eventually found its groove and developed into something great.

But nothing–and I mean nothing–could’ve prepared me for what I was about to see.

As a special treat for Comic Con attendees, Whedon gave us an early look at the unaired episode Epitaph One, which will be available on the Season 1 DVD set that comes out this upcoming Tuesday.

Let it be said right now: Epitaph One isn’t your ordinary Dollhouse episode. It was never meant to air on Fox. It wasn’t intended as the original Season 1 finale, nor is it the original pilot. It was always made to be a bonus for the DVD. And yet, everything that happens in it is a direct reflection of the insanity that’s in store for us in Season 2. It will, without a doubt, radically alter the way you experience the next season of the show.

Before you read on, you should ask yourself: Are you ready to take that plunge?

Still reading?

Good.

Epitaph One takes place in the future. 2019, to be exact. The world as we know it is pretty much in ruins. I’m not going to get into the nitty-gritty of everything that happens in the episode (you can read a full recap here, or better yet, just check out the DVD when it’s released), but it doesn’t follow our normal cast of characters. Not right away, at least. The show opens with a group of humans who, unlike most of society, have managed to avoid being wiped or imprinted with new personalities. Their attempts to avoid contact with technology leads them underground, where they discover the abandoned Dollhouse facility, including the still intact “wiping” room and a large database of personalities and memories. Throughout the episode, we see glimpses of these memories through flashbacks that feature the show’s regular cast of characters, but they’re to events that haven’t yet transpired on the series.

According to Whedon, these memories are indeed real, but “we haven’t seen the whole picture.” Since they’re memories, some of them may be unreliable, and others possibly didn’t play out exactly as we might have interpreted. Whedon also confirmed that we’d be seeing more of the group of human characters, but only in the first episode. This teasing is one of the many factors that should make watching Season 2 unfold a joy to behold, but it doesn’t even address the biggest game-changer: We have seen the future of Dollhouse, and it’s not pleasant.

That this episode will likely go unseen by anyone who doesn’t check out the DVD is both perplexing and fascinating to me. In a way, it’s like Whedon is giving a special gift to all the true fans of the series. He’s offering viewers a handful of pieces to a puzzle, giving us the opportunity to put them together for ourselves once new episodes of the show start airing.

I, for one, cannot wait to see how they do.

And I for one, don't give a shit. Cancel this piece of crap and bring back TSCC Fox.
  • quintushalls
I couldn't agree more. I don't understand the appeal to Dollhouse other than Joss Whedon. With TSCC, I got the show. A lot of it was dragged out, but there was something there that could have been much, much more. It is kinda strange to me that I find TSCC more believable, but I do. I can't seem to get swept up with Shows like Dollhouse and Fringe. I really want to like the show, but something must be wrong with me, I don't see what other people are seeing in the show.

Something is wrong with you. Terminator is not a good franchise.
  • But the show itself was amazing. Fox had 4 shows last season that were amazingly good. Dollhouse, Terminator, House, and Fringe. They canceled one of them just as it was getting good. It's sad. Instead they keep crap like 24 (which, I have to admit, was much better this past season than the last 4 seasons) and American Idol. Great choice, Fox. I say they drop American Idol and give it's two slots a week to bringing back Terminator and Firefly but that's just me.

Yes, it is just you. The day FOX willingly cancels the #1 show on television is the day Hell freezes over.

tcss was so bad. ty fox.
  • quintushalls
Fox is cheating on you with another network.

Why isn't there a "dislike comment" option?

The first half of the season was ridiculously difficult to get through, but the rest, especially Epitaph One (which was awesome), was great.
  • TSCC is one of the worst shows i've seen, it was really really terrible.
  • jimmytwo2
TSCC was a big pile of crap sitting on top of a garbage mountain in the middle of a nj landfill.
  • krackajap
Both shows started off bad. TSCC eventually turning into something decent while Dollhouse quickly turned into something great.
  • dr00d
    You're full of um... flowers.

Dollhouse will only get better and better as any other Whedon show (the exception being Firefly, it was awesome from the beginning)

    TSCC was so-so.
  • i disagree, the pilot for firefly was terrible.. and i love me some firefly.. firefly had its share of horrible episodes, as did buffy and angel etc.

dollhouse is a different concept.. people hate it, people love it and some people just meh at it.. i for one think its a great series the beginning of the series was slow sure but it got very good and season 2 can only get better
  • Ha. Dollhouse was more enjoyable in the last seven episodes than the entire second series of The Sarah Connor Chronicles. I'm glad that, between the two shows, Dollhouse is the one getting to carry on. I especially can't wait to watch Epitaph One after reading this article, even if I have to wait 'til next week before my friend can mail the Comic-Con Bluray to me.

It was freaking epic. Epic tv, that's all I can say
  • dsahawker
    I'll pass....plus I can't stand whats her face
  • Eliza Dushku? She was in the episode for maybe 45 seconds of screen time total. Granted, that's not how it is in all the other episodes but this one she saw about 45 seconds worth spread throughout 4 scenes.

Show started off slow but gradually got better. The biggest "problem" with Dollhouse is the lack of the comedy you come to expect from Joss. However he knows how to create interesting plots and make an expected event turn into an unexpected one. Every show Joss has made got better and better with age, and i'm really looking forward to what he going to do next. I would take average Whedon over 90% of what's on TV right now anyways.
  • Seriously this episode makes it worth getting through the whole first season (which really isn't a chore).

I, like Adam, am ridiculously excited to see how the next season (and hopefully more) play out.

    My god...so damn good.
  • krackajap
I think the thing that excites me the most about this is that it means Joss has a plan for the series and has laid the groundwork that will force him to stick with it.
  • So is the second season not going to make sense unless I (unvoluntarily) buy the expensive entire season to watch some secret episode? Not that I care, I couldn't get into the show either, but this just seems like a big mistake to me... then again, Lost doesn't make sense and people still watch that... so... nevermind.

Epitaph One really sums up how I feel about Dollhouse. It has the poor writing of season one, and it's nothing but a promise.

All through season one we had to listen to Whedon going "Just hang on till episode six, that's really where we hit our stride", and episode 6 hit and it was great. Then episode 7 hit and it was just as bad as the previous episodes.
Then Dushku began her "Episode 8 guys! And episode 12. Gonna be awesome".

And the only reason I watched this show was the promise that it might be good. Because it's Joss Whedon after all.

Now we got Epitaph One. And to me, this episode is nothing but the creators shouting at us "See! SEE! This show isn't just about a high tech brothel! Look, we have an arch! We have something planned! Oh just you wait, it's going to get real good".

I find that hard to believe though.

This episode was pretty shocking. interesting concept, but...I really don't know what they're doing with it. the fact that it's NOT the basis for where the second season is starting is kind of unsettling. I don't really understand why this episode exists. that means the next season is just dramatic filler for something we already know is coming, and Whedon's comment about "The memories could not be the same" is director talk for "We shot these scenes now, we haven't shot the actual second season yet, so we could scrap these scenes, just FYI." I don't see what they could have left to surprise us with if the second season is just between this episode and the last season.

not to mention, they just killed off or mentally ruined some of the characters we had become attached to in a matter of 40 minutes. that's kind of a cruel thing to do in a TV show. even worse than Battlestar's "New Caprica".
  • Whedon worshipers are just like abused spouses, Whedon can treat his fans like crap and all he has to say is i'm sorry its gonna be better i promise, then do it again. Fans are like you don't understand he loves us you will see its gonna be better he promised. I know it will cause he has done it to us before and it would have been great if the evil networks did cancel him.

After watching this stupid episode i came away thinking this cast sans 2 people are great and i think Duskus character was played better by the little girl.

And it doesnt make since how the world would go to crap so easy and so fast.

Didn't get a chance to see more than just a few episodes on TV. Can't wait to give this series a chance when it's released on DVD.
  • Jose
I just saw the unaired episode, and it really alters everything you learned from Season 1.
  • not gonna read the article, downloading the episode now.
  • Enthropii
    Aaaargh! I need DVDs!
  • sanyo
So, summary in my mind: This unaired DVD only episode is really great in its revelation of what happens and introduces a cool new setting and plot. And then we only get a glimpse of it again next season and have to wade through the crap that is Dollhouse: Present Timeline to wait for more? Really? That's stupid.

I stopped watching Dollhouse after 5 episodes because it was so on-again off-again. Every other episode was good, but there wasn't even much in those good episodes to keep me watching. And even now with this tease, I don't even know if I want to bother trudging through the rest of season one.
  • frelling_cute
I watched it last night. I didnt care of it. Lets hope this is not the way next season will be.
  • jasonlikesfun
I bailed on Dollhouse after episode 3 but someday I will return. If I had bailed on Buffy during season 1 I wouldnt have discovered the best show ever. Love me some Buffy and Firefly yo!
  • Just watched it, if I could watch a show that took place in 2019 then I would love it. Only problem is that season two is gonna be more like what season 1 was but with foreshadowing sprinkled without. I think all this unaired 13th episode did was make me realize that someone like Felicia Day should have been cast as echo, because the girl as acting chops. I have seen her on house and now this and I think she is great. I wish firefly would have received a 2nd chance season like this show has, but alas my life is just a bunch of wishes that have not come true.
  • bigmansmallmouth
That sounds crazy exciting. Stoked to at least NetFlix the DVD's and see that episode.
  • mousie
