Towards the end of the Avatar panel at Comic-Con today, James Cameron dropped a bombshell: 15 minutes of the film will be screened in digital theaters for free across the globe on August 21. After viewing the Avatar footage, I think an event such as this will serve the film well—at least, much more so than a typical trailer and marketing campaign.

Read Cameron’s complete announcement, along with some thoughts on what it means, after the break.

We’re going to do something unprecedented. It’s a social marketing experiment. We’re going to take over as many IMAX 3D theaters and other select 3D theaters worldwide on August 21 and we’re going to let an international global audience come see 15 minutes of Avatar for free. It’s going to be Avatar day.

Not only will this be a good move towards spreading good word about Avatar, it will also serve to help make more people aware of 3D films in general. I’m sure many have still yet to try watching a film either because they would rather save money on the 2D version, or simply don’t have access to a 3D theater. For the first group, a free screening might convince them to at least head to a theater to check out 3D projection. For the second, it may not be as helpful, but potentially the free screenings could make people aware of 3D theaters near them that they were previously unaware of.

Discuss: Do you think Avatar day is a worthwhile experiment? What else would it take to make people aware of 3D film screenings, or is that even something worth spending time on?

    Jizzed in my pants!
  • go lick it off then c0nt
  • go lick it urself tard!
  • Hi_there
Don't listen to John. Totally agree = )
  • do u want to lick each other off?
  • Captain Awesome
    Holy shit, I can't wait.
  • AA5
    Wow really intresting concept
  • the spiller
Hey jim I bet you are regretting showing footage at comic con now. But it's like when fox made you push a trailer for the abyss when we both knew you were not ready. And trailers on line-big mistake. You should have gone with the original plan and not shown anything till two weeks before opening. We've made sum good movies together. see you at the premiere mij
  • Greg
That's a great out-of-the-box marketing move. Things like this will definitely make the world aware that this movie is an event, as long as the visuals deliver!
  • jimmytheghost
I honestly think this experiment will help make the film one of the biggest ever. I've been following the blogs on Twitter all day and everyone says the footage was just as good as the hype said it would be. With all this combined, AVATAR may sink Titanic!
  • squintas
Free 15 minutes in 3D IMAX? I have a feeling this is going to be.... SPECTACULAR.
  • tenno
Is it going to be before a full feature of anything else? Or any other kind of event associated with it? Or is the whole event just the 15 minutes of footage?

Look I'm super excited for Avatar and all Cameron is doing but I don't think most people will go out of there way for just 15 minutes of anything, especially people who aren't familiar with it already.
  • Wiimo
Agreed. Especially when there's no announcement of what theaters this will be playing at. I'm sure the details will come out leading up to the event, but I don't plan on going if it's more than 30 minutes away.
  • ace
Meh, its not like you two were invited anyway...
  • Wiimo
    I'm telling Mom.
  • bjon86
Dude, the 15 minutes is only gonna be released in IMAX 3D for that one day. Does that sound to you like he wants that many people going to see that? Or even if he did want everybody to see the 15 minute preview, he wouldn't get his wish. This is for a select group of people. I'm DIEING to see that 15 minutes.

I just think that the people that do get those tickets and show up are gonna be a hell of lot more avid about than myself. I aint waitin 3 hours for 15 minutes unless I go there with friends and we can trade off in the line.
  • Jaysus this is awesome and a great idea for marketing. The theaters will either be overfilled of ppl or super empty.
  • Palmer
I'd imagine something like that would be a logistical nightmare. But damn it. I want to see that footage!
  • jesusne0
That's great. 15 minutes of that is sure as hell going to be better than 3 hours of Transformers 2
  • Allynd Dudnikov
in an economic recession people will go see anything that's free. Especially if it makes them feel special. This is Cameron's ace tactic.
  • Erick
this is fucking genius. you show me 15-20 minutes of almost any major big-budget sci-fi/fantasy/action movie, you're damn right I'd pay to see the whole thing regardless of how honestly those preview minutes represented the final product.
  • presto117
Avatar day... I literally just watched that episode of avatar: the last airbender yesterday
  • theAguilar
    I'll be there.
  • starscream9289
It's gonna be pure fucking chaos!
  • MIND_DANCER
I'm sorry. This isn't exciting. This feels forced, unnecessary, and silly.

Forced because its an explicit play to build buzz, but why do they have to build more buzz? It makes me worry about the film if they need to create some kind of overt gimmick to try and pull more people in. Aren't we all already pulled in? Have they lost faith in reaching a wide audience?

It just seems unnecessary because the film is already heavily anticipated. They aren't going to catch anybody that doesn't already want to see a 3D SciFi film because they offer 15 free minutes. The same people that shrug off going and watching a 3D film aren't going to suddenly jump on the opportunity to go out of there way to sample 15 minutes of a 3D film for free. If they aren't excited for it now, they aren't going to get super excited to drive and watch a sample.

It feels silly to me because a huge new audience isn't going to be lured to the film. You aren't going to get a bunch of people driving all the way to a nearby IMAX theater just to watch 15 minutes of a film. I'm sure many fans will, but those fans are already talking about the film and spreading the word without this gimmick. If anything, it KILLS the ambiguity surrounding the project. The mystery pulling us in is lost by revealing the magic too early to anyone that wants to get a quick peak.

I don't care how amazing it's going to be. I can wait to see the film in its entirety, because myself, and most other fans of Cameron and SciFi are already hooked into paying to see this film. I think the potential to lose some viewers is higher than the potential to gain some viewers.
  • super_aj
i wanted to disagree with your post but after reading it all, what you say kinda makes sense. Those of us already anticipating it will go see it, but those that don't already know about it, probably won't care. However I'm still excited by this news because, personally, I'd love to finally see something from the movie, and I'll get to see 15 mins. for free. Can't beat that.
  • hoodlum
Mind_Dancer - you are right that this isnt going to bring a new crowd to see Avatars 15mins... It'll be those same people that have been waiting like starving zombies for a fresh piece of meat. But what you are missing is the viral effect 'after' us zombies watch 15mins... Twitter, Facebook and the old-fashion-hole-in-our-face will be pimpin out the film for James. That will bring a whole different crowd on opening day and that's the plan. The plan has nothing to do with drawing new people in for the first 15mins - its a well thought out plan to create the worlds largest marketing/PR army working for the glory of Cameron!

So the only way this "sucks" is now we are going to have to fight even harder to get in on opening weekend.
  • Nick
I totally disagree. This is a chance for those of us who are really excited to pull some or our friends in who aren't. Hey let's go check out 15 min of this movie so you can see why I'm really jazzed about it. Since it's free, it'll make it easier to bring them along - who can say no to free? This could work really well.
  • jimkrisvoy
With $300Mil at stake, obviouslyFox hopes this will help to recoup it...and, after all, a lot of success for any given film comes from positive word-of-mouth, hype and so-on.
  • Brett_F
When you let people 'in' on something you create an excitement. People will feel more included by being a part of this privileged group, and there's a feeling of stronger attachment to it, and will be quicker to defend it in the eyes of adversity.

    Well played J.C, well played.
  • Johan
It was the best news about Avatar for ages. The best news about any movie.
  • slurpee
People have been anticipating to see something for such a long time, I think it's great they're giving us a preview... soooo excited...
  • Sam_Jankis
I wonder if they're going to advertise this? I mean, of course all us movie buffs will flock to the 3d theaters but I doubt much of the general public will.
  • crymetime33
This sounds alot like what the dark knight did just without the viral behind and its a little longer then 7 min lol but i went to the one in toronto and it was in imax this isent anything new just another dark knight knock off tron now this.
  • super_aj
I'm excited! If it is going down the way he claims, I'm in.
  • Legs4DaLame

  • oliver
Good place for all big and tall singles, please check: ---Tallloving Co M ---- ,More fun waiting for you...
  • Cameron has been hyping this movie up as revolutionary as far as it's CGI and 3D. What this says to me is that he's so confident in this fact, that when people see 15 minutes of it they are going to tell all their friends how amazing it was so they all go see it.

So either this is as amazing as Cameron has hyped it up to be, or he's lost in a dream world and it'll be an epic fail. However I've heard some good buzz from the ComiCon footage.
  • kjell
    I'm down
  • richCie
ha thats pretty cool, bet you'll have to get there early to beat the queues...

actually i really dont think this is very high profile yet, where's the goddamn trailers?
  • jrice73
WOW! Just WOW! This is a helluva move by Cameron.
  • karns048
Avatar will be a wake up call to everyone. This is the perfect thing to do to get his movie out and let everyone know that 3D movies are the future.

  • antiblockbustavatar
In response to Mind Dancer - I dunno, mate. I just read about the 15 min trailer in the local paper and I'm now wading through the internet trying to find out more. I'm not into blockbuster films at all, the last time i went to see one was "Gladiator" 'cos my mum wanted to see it and I thought it was shite. I've always been into the smaller independent films. But this film sounds like it could be breaking new ground -which will be tempting to a lot of film heads - not just the sci-fi fans.
  • jimkrisvoy
If the film is good, then "Avatar Day" should open up a whole new audience to 3D - and certainly the upcoming release of this film. It should also sell a lot of popcorn, so exhibitors are probably more than excited about this. For 3D fans, its obviously a must see if they didnt make it to Comicon. Also, read a number of positive comments about the 25 minutes screened at the convention, so have to wonder what all the negative concern is about.
