Alice in Wonderland

Perhaps the most interesting footage shown this morning at the Disney Comic-Con panel was the short teaser trailer for Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland. Patton Oswalt, who was moderating the panel, flipped for the footage and demanded it be shown three times. This was probably for the best, because aside from the very short teaser Burton had nothing else to show from the film.

The teaser starts off with the Mad Hatter questioning Alice, shows her falling down the rabbit hole, and then quickly glimpses all the main characters including Helena Bonham Carter’s Red Queen, Stephen Fry’s Chesire Cat, and a smattering of scenes meant to show off the 3D elements, all cut to MGMT’s Kids. We also caught our first glimpse at an eyepatched Crispin Glover as the Knave of Hearts.

In the Q&A, Burton mentioned that it was very difficult for him to get used to shooting with green screen. He mentioned that he stuck to a fast and involved method of shooting with his actors to help maintain a sense of reality. Burton also mentioned that they didn’t use much motion capturing in the film—instead, they stuck to animating the digital characters by hand. Overall, he felt the most difficult aspect of making this film is the process he’s currently stuck in, editing and putting together all of the many pieces of the film.

In contrast to many other Alice adaptations, Burton mentioned that the film will utilize elements from the two Alice books (Alice in Wonderland, and Through the Looking Glass), as well as reference smaller material found within those books such as the poem Jabberywocky.

Towards the end of the panel, Burton unveiled Johnny Depp as a surprise guest. He didn’t stick around for too long, but did reveal that he unfortunately can’t see films in 3D, so he’ll probably never get to experience this film fully.

For a film that seems to be the culmination of Burton’s career, the footage so far looks promising. It’s currently scheduled for release on March 10, 2010.

Man that looks pretty nutty. The cat freaked me out.

What condition prevents someone from seeing movies in 3-D?
  • tommygun101
maybe he just doesn't want to. film purist.
  • Allynd Dudnikov
having a lazy eye, a pupil that is slightly smaller, distorted light cones, or in my case for the older 3D films: red/green colour blindness.
  • There is also a condition I heard about in which the individual can only see out of one eye at a time (and hence does not have the double-vision needed for 3D)

i saw an interview a while ago where depp stated he never watches any of his films when completed, it weirds him out too much to see himself on screen.
  • weird like burton. ill watch it but im not looking forward to it, never do when tim burton is behind the wheel. Yea im in the minority, but his style is not my cup of tea.
  • I agree.
  • zebrat
    why watch it then?
  • just a guy
Please explain what "he unfortunately can’t see films in 3D" means...
  • ._.
maybe someone forgot to tell him he has to wear the 3-D glasses
  • me
Johnny Depp looks like Bette Midler from Hocus Pocus without the hat on!!! hahahahaha
  • The Great Cambino
Looks more like "Mad Hatter in Wonderland."

I've seen just about every rendition of Alice In Wonderland so I'll be seeing this as well. While Tim Burton has had a lot of misses as of late, I'm still a fan of his work and style.
  • I also can't see films in 3D. thankfully im not the only one.
  • Yes please elaborate why Depp can't see 3D. I'm a huge fan and have never heard this before.
  • Brendan McD
Whattya know, Johnny Depp is playing the Mad Hatter just like everyone would've expected. Just looks like he traded his cup of hot chocolate for a cup of tea.
  • I'm not sure about the CG Cheshire cat. Looks like an excuse to show off something in 3D jumping out at the audience.
  • sma
Because thats different from most 3D scenes, how?
  • Because a 3D scene doesn't have to jump out at you. 3D can be used to add depth. It doesn't need to be like the clichéd Disney theme park attractions.
  • Looks good. I wonder what kind of interest there would be for this though. I don't think too many people are interested in Alice in Wonderland.
  • CheshireAna
Uh. There's a lot of people who are keen on adaptations of Lews Carrol's novel. Aside from that, there's plenty of interest in, oh, I don't know, Tim Burton, Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway, and the rest of the cast.
  • Doc
    Crispin!!
  • cattygirl
I think there are still many people interested in Alice in Wonderland...and many interested in anything Tim Burton is involved with.

I love Johnny Depp, with a creepy passion, but isn't it weird that this teaser is basically a character introduction for the Mad Hatter. Isn't this film entitled Alice in Wonderland? I feel like the focus should be more on her. I know Johnny is the star and anything he looks at turns to gold but I think we could've done without the three shot had pick up. Oh well. Hopefully the trailer will be a little more exciting.

I can't wait for this movie.

Keep in mind that this is a teaser trailer, and the point of it is to get people excited for the film, and make it seem to appeal to the largest audience. Mia Wasikowski, and some of the rest of the cast, aren't exactly household names. Depp, though, is most definitely a draw in, and playing this as another Depp/Burton collab is a surefire way to bring in the crowds.
  • Very excited for this movie, I'm a huge Tim Burton fan. Can't wait for it to come out.
  • heroinmonkey
The whole can't see 3D thing was just a Depp being sly.
If you watched his interview with David Lettermen, you'll see that Johnny Depp has said he never watches any movie he has made. He does the film and goes back to doing whatever. His wife and children watch his films but he said he doesn't and doesn't have an interest to see them or himself on screen.

This is cool, I can't wait to watch this movie..

I'm happy to see Burton will be putting 3D all up in our grills. As much as I love subtle use of 3D I prefer this crazy sensory attack.
  • Gabby
actually it wasn't Kids by MGMT it was Time to Pretend by them
  • Ziggy12345
Yeah! Time to fix that guys!
  • CyT
I wonder if Johnny Depp is maybe in the running for Bilbo Baggins? He looks so much like Elijah in that trailer!
  • topheavy
Absolutely joyless and uninteresting.. much like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
  • Wall•E Plays Pong
The trailer shown at Comic~Con had MGMT's "Time to Pretend" playing with it. Much better than this trailer.
  • I agree. I had to download that song after I saw the trailer. Never had an interest in MGMT before then.
  • Rob
Strange, but looks and sounds good, so I'll check it out.
