Sam Raimi to Direct World of Warcraft Movie

World of Warcraft

Sam Raimi, director of Evil Dead, Army of Darkness, the Spider-Man films, has signed on to direct a big screen adaptation of World of Warcraft, Blizzard Entertainment’s massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG). The scoop was first reported by AICN and later confirmed by Variety, who also reports that The Dark Knight producer Charles Roven is also on board. The current plan is for Raimi to supervise the development of the movie and to begin production after Spider-Man 4.

“At its core, ‘Warcraft’ is a fantastic, action-packed story,” Raimi said in a statement.

The game was first introduced in 1994, and now has more than 11.5 million monthly subscribers. Legendary Pictures has been developing the film project for a few years now. 300 producer Thomas Tull revealed at BlizzCon 2007 that the film would have a budget of over $100 million and was to be set one year before the events of WOW.

“We’re going to be looking for someone of Zak Snyder (300) or Chris Nolan (The Dark Knight, Batman Beings) calibre,” said Tull who revealed that the company is aiming for a PG-13 rating. “I can tell you that this is the one thing about running a studio and making these things that’s hard. You want to not compromise and have the right level of intensity. The story and the director’s vision is what’s ultimately going to dictate that. Personally one of my favorite movies of all time is Lord of the Rings, which has a PG-13 rating.”

At the time WOW players balked at the mention of a PG-13 rating, but this was before The Dark Knight broke that mold. I’m not sure how much of this is still relevant to the project considering Tull was also touting a 2009 release, and that obviously never came to pass.

I’ve never played World of Warcraft, and I have never quite understood the obsession with the game. I can tell you that I have lost friends to the fiction online world of fantasy, so it must be good. Having Raimi on board as fdirector certainly makes me a lot more interested about the film adaptation. We all know how the movie would have looked with Uwe Boll in the director’s chair — probably something not even as good as Dungeons and Dragons.

  • Uhh I love Raimi....but not World of Warcraft! Bad choice. :(
  • rockinrors
I hate the game, yet I reckon it would be a good movie.
I'm thinking Lord of the Rings with heaps of different characters like Star Wars...?
  • kfizz
Its not just world of warcraft its also going to be based on the other warcraft games. The RTS since there are 4 war craft games if you count them up as the 3 RTS and 1 mmo. RTS stands for real time strategy sorry seeing that this is a movie site people might need a refresher.
  • whsmith
the press release doesn't mention "world of warcraft" only warcraft... considering WoW doesn't really have a storyline suitable for a movie, I think it will probably be based on the original RTS games.
  • Itri12
    WHAT?!?!

    Suddenly this movie became important.

...this can't be real, can it?
  • my exact reaction haha
  • Great pick for a director. Raimi can really do some good. Chris Metzen is currently writing the script for the movie. Also, as a slight correction, and I know it's nit-picking cause I'm a fan of both WoW and the other Warcraft games. This film takes place between the events of Warcraft 3 and World of Warcraft. It isn't a WoW movie, but a movie based on the Warcraft lore.

    *takes off the nerd hat*
  • I love this idea. He can bring the awesome where there has not been awesome before... a video game adaptation.
  • TheDaftPunk
Been waiting for this for a while now, Sam Raimi seems like a good choice.
  • Yoji
Raimi's involvement has me interested, but can someone tell me what makes world of warcraft movie material? Never played the game before.
  • samboni
human and elves fighting orcs and undead monsters
  • starscream9289
But wasn't that what LOTR was all about?
  • MickJ
It's a bit more involved than that. There's humans, dwarves, elves, orcs, Tauren, undead, and some other races that exist as separate civilizations, and then demons from another dimension disturb the balance.
  • Starstream
Yeah as MickJ points out its a lot more complicated, for instance the Orcs aren't evil and from another dimension but their world was destroyed and were under the control by the Burning Legion (race of demons).

They end up being used as an invading army in the original Warcraft RTS games in the third one they break free from the influence of the Legion & are no longer the bad guys. Haven't played Wow so don't know the current story for them.

Warcraft has a very large back-story and universe with lots of magical creatures it doesn't really compare well to LOTR.
  • whsmith
yes, it's pretty much a generic rip off of Games Workshop (Blizzard was sued) which was a rip off of LOTR. Which makes it a lame premise for a movie. But hey, maybe they'll do something cool with it... who knows.

One thing that I hope gets mentioned is the story of Arthas. They could make a trilogy about that tragic story. Arthas the prince of Lorderon was to be the savior of the kingdom and take over after his father. Unfortunately he is corrupted and kills his father and becomes the most evil character in the game.
  • celeb300
Arthas' story is what the neweset WOW expansion is based around and the entire story is told throughout the game. Must say the only one i've taken any interest in over the years of playing
  • Rockie
i am an avid gamer but i never touched this game

not sure how i feel about this news but i am leaning towards the positive
  • The_Kid
A fan of Raimi, but not a fan of WOW. But I'm interested to see where he goes with this. I also wonder what the script feels like.
  • Enthropii
What does this mean for Spidey?
  • ryz
He's still doing 4n5 of spidy.
A actual movie for WOW could be another 5 years or more.
  • Raimi huh?

Well... he's certainly got the /dance nailed down.
  • Great, it'll be three hours of someone killing boars and wolves while someone else runs around them being an idiot.

At least Bruce Campbell will probably have a part in it.
  • DonaldDuck
You're an idiot. It's a warcraft movie, not World of Warcraft. Ever heard of WC1, 2 and 3?
  • You're an idiot. Ever hear of a joke? And fine, it'll be three hours of watching a peon gather wood...
  • Colonel_Kurtz
    Leroy Jennnnnnkins!

That's all I want out of this movie. Throw in a Leroy Jenkins, and I'll put up with the rest of the movie.
  • mungojerryus
THATS IT!!!! Bruce Campbell as Leroy Jenkins!!!!!!!! Oh yeah! Oh Hells yeah!
  • nytesister
Oh yeah, maybe even Thrull. That would be a good roll for him!
  • Wow, totally surprised by this announcement. Sam Raimi sound like a good choice to me! I am a huge Warcraft fan! So this is really exciting news. Now who will play the key parts....Arthas, Thrall...
  • Sam Raimi
Video game adaptations have to die out. We don't want to spawn another Uwe Boll people.
  • dsahawker
Is it sad that I'm excited for this movie? I don't play the game, but it's an awesome universe and in the hands of Raimi it could be an epic movie on may levels.
  • Mux
i agree alot of ppl here are saying that this is going to just be another game adaption.

there has been plenty of books regarding the warcraft universe. there is probably more lore history in this universe than there is in Tolkien's LotR universe. as a huge fan of the lore myself i am eagerly anticipating this movie and only hope that Raimi can live up to Chris Metzens story telling. If you think this is another Good vs Bad movie your wrong, def wrong its more a Good vs Good vs Bad vs Unknown Bad. I just hope they don't make it only Alliance vs horde so that people can see that it isn't a LotR remade.

long story short Warcraft is a mix of LotR mixed with Lovecraft and Norse mythology. If you are interested in a good read i highly recommend the War of the Ancients trilogy. It'll get u set up on knowing quite a bit of history as well as introducing a ton of the heroes from Warcraft.

Warcraft, especially in its pre-WoW form, despite its ridiculous popularity and commercial success, has some truly amazing fantasy lore. I'm not calling it Tolkien, but its good stuff. Hell, most of the cinematics from the previous games had more artistic and epic value than most game-inpired movies. This could definately be really cool.
  • hulkaros
You thought you had those people as your friends. A game, a movie, drugs or anything cannot make you lose yourself or the people you care about.

Such losses (most of them) were already lost and were waiting for the chance to reveal their ugly face.

As for this game plus books plus comics plus this and that to movie adaptation, by now, seems at least intriguing.

Also, by now, I expect such a fantasy movie to at least top Lord of the Rings and/or Harry Potter. Being on par isn't enough.

You've obviously never dealt with addiction...

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Addiction

Sorry but unless you are somehow forced into any form of "addiction" its all YOUR fault.

A game such as WoW simply reveals the ugly nature of your "addicted" friends which was lurking in them. Today is WoW. Tomorrow will be this. Years ahead will be that.

Stop blaming the company which sells gambling when in reality its YOU that gives them your time, money and full focus. Cards, dice, table, etc. are NOT responsible for your own addiction.

    The problem IS you.

    YOU.
  • Craigasorusrex
Perfect choice. I have a great feeling about this one.

Anyone who's seen the Evil Dead series the Spidey films and the recently released Drag me to Hell will realize that Raimi fits the mold to approach a project like this.

I really hope Raimi will be able to capture the scope of the Warcraft story. If you can't capture the sheer size of the world the movie will fail.

But I'm hoping for the best.
  • i dont care for this game and dont understand why people pay for it...

"The game was first introduced in 1994, and now has more than 11.5 million monthly subscribers."

    lol wat?
Warcraft: Orcs & Humans was introduced in 1994 and World of Warcraft now has more than 11.5 million monthly subscribers.. Fixed

Love Raimi, love WoW. 100% GO YES! I am on...fucking...board.
  • Not sure what to think about this. Raimi has butchered Spiderman, but Drag Me To Hell was fun. If he does WoW in the style of Evil Dead and DMTH it'd be good fun at least. Thankfully I have no interest in the IP at all, so whether it's a success or failure means nothing to me.
  • fanboy_d
i'm disgusted that snyder was mentioned in the same breath as nolan. disgusted.
  • Eibmoz
warcraft 1 was introduced in 1994, not world of warcraft. It was introduced in 2005 I beleive which makes the 11.5 mil players. Just wanted to let you know.

Otherwise yay sam raimi is making this and NOT Uwe Boll. It may actually be good...
  • matt94
Let's hope this does not turn out to be like the halo movie.
  • rcesm
"...never played World of Warcraft..." Gee, I wonder how many directors, producers and actors (for that matter) have said that about EVERY VIDEO GAME MOVIE, EVER!

You can't make a good video game movie with people that have never experienced the game itself. When will people learn that...
  • Mux
umm check youur facts bud, a lot of directors/actors/actresses/famous people play world of warcraft. it is that huge. i can almost guarantee that every actor has either played or has a kid playing this game or has seen someone play it. the biggest fan that is an actor that i know of is vin diesel, he plays it almost religiously reported on some websites.

small list so far i know of, Vin, Robbin Williams, McCauly Caulkin and his GF, dude from new superman movie, Mr.T, William Shattner, mini-me, Dave Chappele thats probably just the tip of the iceberg as well
and for Raimi to sign on to something like this I'm sure he has played even.
  • Ok, danger but Sam Raimi can do that. One of the people who can made this stuff.
  • topheavy
PG-13?!?!?!? I thought it would be PG simply based on the art of the game, and in comparison to most shooters on PC, WOW is about as tame as a pussycat.

Why would people be up in arms over wow not being R? Silly internets.
