When the economic crisis went into full swing, bookshops started to notice an odd trend: people who hadn’t read much more than a Grisham or Clancey novel in the last decade were suddenly rabid Ayn Rand fans. Atlas Shrugged, with its message of capitalism unfettered by government control, blasted back onto bestseller charts in the last year, making the long-gestating film adaptation seem a lot more likely. Now Charlize Theron is seriously interested, says the Risky Biz Blog, and because she and the producers are concerned that simply making a feature film wouldn’t do justice to the novel’s epic length (1100+ pages) it may instead become a miniseries for Epix, the new pay-cable network that Lionsgate is setting up with MGM and Viacom.

Theron was one of a small group of actresses (among them Anne Hathaway and Julia Roberts) that expressed interest in heroine Dagny Taggart a few months back. Theron’s commitment to the project remains a grey area, though it is said she’s been driving development on the project in recent months.

This is only the latest chapter in an effort to film the novel that is becoming almost as epic as the book itself. Loads of talent have been involved over the past four decades, and Angelina Jolie has been the prime mover on the film for quite some time. For a while director Vadim Perelman was attached. Or so the trades said, and so he said in many interviews. But in June of last year Jolie claimed he’d never been part of the project. Now, appropriately, it seems like she’s taking a back seat in the development. James Hart and Braveheart writer Randall Wallace have both written drafts (Hart’s said to be longer and more ‘mini-series friendly’) but any adaptation of the gigantic, didactic novel (really, this thing is more of a sprawling Rand manifesto than a narrative) is going to be problematic. If adapted as a mini-series, one whole episode could be that damned long speech by John Galt, the mysterious guy who leads a secession of creative and innovative minds from society.

Beyond the current surge of interest in the book there’s one more reason to get this going sooner rather than later: if a film doesn’t go into production by the end of next year, the book option reverts back to the Rand estate. At that point, you can bet that the price to renewing it will skyrocket.

Quite exciting news to hear this has some sort of progress. I was very interested in seeing Anne Hathaway do it, but this sounds great.

I never heard of this new EPIX channel.
  • kfizz
That is kinda sad since its the same story as bioshock. Its a dam shame that we may not see it.
  • It's not the same story as BioShock. While there are randian elements in the game, you are mistaken.
  • kfizz
I know it was sorta just the jumping off point. Since it has some of the same people from the story in it.
  • Chris
Which character from Atlas Shrugged is in Bioshock?
  • kfizz
I mean at the the core the story and place and events are based on it. The main figures sorta resemble what took place but they are not one in the same. Plus the main bad in bioshock is named atlas. The other one named is Andrew Ryan. I think its more winks and nods.
  • Chraz
I've played Bioshock and read Atlas Shrugged, and the stories aren't that similar. There is one major similarity, but the fact that one is an 1,100 page novel with little to no violence and the other a first person shooter kind of exemplifies that they aren't that similar.
  • L_Ron_Jeffard
There's something funny about an Atlas Shrugged MINI-series.

Also, I wonder who would play Dagny's idiot brother.
  • dave
I see William H. Macy as Jim Taggart, and Nestor Campbell as Frisco D'Anconia.
  • dagreenman18
Yay Charlize Theron, boo Ayn Rand.

Atlas Shrugged was the biggest waste of my life. I lay the blame entirely on my right-wing History teacher.

There is nothing uplifting about unfettered greed. What Rand was really touching base on was putting one's self in front of the needs of all. The mantra of Bernie Madoff.
  • Name
you clearly didn't read the novel well. then you would know ayn rand disagreed with the "bernie madoffs" and that was not her philosophy at all. maybe you should re-read.
  • dagreenman18
NOOOOOOOOO. No one should READ Atlas Shrugged, let alone torture themselves a second time.
  • Dysthymia83
Her philosophy was pretty much Satanism without any of the black magic stuff involved : quasi-moral hedonism. Rational egoism. I think you can easily see her philosophy of objectivism is flawed when you consider she died alone and miserable. And her approach to capitalism, laissez-faire, sure didn't work during the industrial revolution. Ask the child workers.
  • Chris
I know, those poor child workers! I mean, without the jobs they'd starve to death, but that doesn't matter 'cause there was plenty opportunities for unskilled labor back in the 19th century! If only capitalism hadn't reared it ugly head, those kids could have continued frolicking, jobless and poor and dying of disease! Hooray! :D
  • janine
    Hey Chris,

With government intervention there are laws regulating what factories can and can't do....how many hours in a work week, minimum wage, not having children do dangerous, life-threatening work and not attending school so the factories can have cheap, expendable labor. Oh wait.....without unrestrained capitalism they would have starved so the factories were good for the children, right? LOL Yeah anyone who holds that philosophy needs their heads examined. How about the greedy tycoons have gov regulations and unions and pay a decent wage to the parents so the children are fed and can go to school instead of trying to pay unlivable wages so every member of the family has to work all day long just to buy a loaf of bread while they rake in the profits. Thank goodness for government regulations!!!!!!!!!!!
  • I still have yet to read Atlas Shrugged... I got it, but I don't have the time to read a 1,000 page long novel. Yikes.
  • Wow... you have no idea what you are talking about. Try reading the book before spouting your well-rehearsed, ill-conceived bromides.
  • RMC
Interesting. Atlas Shrugged is the most important and significant book of the last century that was not written by Aldous Huxley.
  • MIND_DANCER
What about Tropic of Cancer by HENRY MILLER?
  • Name
i havent seen any news about Charlize's The Burning Plain, whats the deal with that movie? i want to see it? isnt it from the same writer of Babel?
  • Andrew
Ironically, the mini-series will prove Ayn Rand's philosophy correct by putting the new Lions Gate channel out of business. Ah capitalism!
  • Andy
If the book has been a best seller for decades and sales have recently been spiking, I wonder how you figure making a miniseries out of it will put this new
    channel out of business.
  • Angelina Jolie IS Dagny Taggart. I'm ok with a mini-series though... as long as that means it's not made cheaply.
  • quintushalls
I am really looking forward to this film! I loved Anthem (similar to 1984) and I haven't read this book. So if it is coming out, I will get it on Audible.
  • janine
I liked Anthem, but hated Atlas Shrugged. You can carry something too far.
  • Zinc
Capitalism is great and all, but fuck Ayn Rand. All of her followers I see on those right nut wing forums keep going on about how people who disagree are "collectivists" and that crap. Rand was just a terrible person.
  • Huh? Please don't judge Rand by those who claim to understand her. She was a highly hospitable, kind woman who has been demonized by those who used her over the years. She would never call any one out for being a collectivist simply because they disagreed with her. They would need to show that they were by their principles actions and words first. Then, she wouldn't just call them a collectivist, but show why and how she came to that conclusion. Then, she would answer the questions that would be going though their heads the next day, as they reflect fully on the discussion.
  • SPOILER ALERT!

"one whole episode could be that damned long speech by John Galt, the mysterious guy who leads a secession of creative and innovative minds from society."

Can I get a little SPOILER ALERT from the author?!? You just casually ruined the entire mystery of the book!!! Unbelievable! Whether you like the book or not I think you better edit this post pronto before you piss off a lot of people.
  • RussFischer
It's a 52-year old novel. Statute of limitations on spoilers is WAY up.
  • Have to disagree on Angelina. As a veteran spokes-person for the United Nations, she is more the Dr. Stadler type, as she should know better.
  • Meh, I'd rather see a Fountainhead adaption.
  • Michael_C
Didn't they make this already? The Incredibles or something to that affect? Objectivism zing!
  • topheavy
Please Theron, keep the Flux stuff out of there... stick to the Fountainhead as a springboard.
  • Name
Sales of the book going up probably also has something to do with Bioshock. It's not like gamers are illiterate.
  • janine
Atlas Shrugged was the most redundant book I have ever read. It makes it's argument early in the book and keeps repeating the theme over and over and over and over. Anyone who wants to help another person....say in the case of a bystanding assisting someone in need without personal gain is purely evil. Only those motivated by greed and personal gain have virtue. This is the worst piece of garbage I have ever read and I can't believe they are making it into a film.
  • andydufrane
Atlas shrugged "was redundant"? Do you even know what that word means? Atlas shrugged is one of the greatest novels ever written. The story keeps readers on the edge of their seat throughout. Once I started reading it was very hard to stopped and I found myself finishing the 1000+ page book in four days. Man is not altruistic in nature, therefore to deny nature and try to create a society based on principles contrary to the nature of men, and self-interest (which is what drives everyone) would never work. Do you think liberal politicians are really out there working for you? They dont give a sh*t about you! Al Gore stands to make millions from his pimping the global warming hoax, or did you not know that he stands to make millions selling carbon credits? Why doesnt hillary clinton volunteer to pay more income taxes? She wants to raise other peoples taxes, why doesnt she volunteer to pay more? WHY!!!! Self-interest, that is why, it is what drives the world and there is nothing wrong with looking out for number one, yourself. If you want to help someone great! Do it, but dont try to force your sacrificing yourself on others. Taking someones money by way of a gun through government (IRS) and giving that money to someone else who did not earn it (welfare), is not "moral" it is immoral. The government stole that money, it is blood money, whether or not it is used to "help" someone is irrelevant as it was stolen in the first place.

Atlas Shrugged is by far the best book I have ever read. I have read it many times and givern it to many people. They all have the same opinion as me. I just hope they hurry up with the movie and don't screw around with the story (as they do many times when they make a book into a movie). Love to know if they are serious this time and who is in the cast.
  • jerryschermerhorn
Great, all of the Hollywood Libs rushing to do a role that they can't relate to. Hollywood whores, everyone of them. Ayn is rolling over in her grave.
  • Steve
The finest book ever written, we should all try and live by the philosophy of OBJECTIVISM... "When you think you are faced with a contradiction re-examine your premises one of them is wrong" A is A
  • red
this book was a true masterpiece, after reading it i went on to read the fountainhead and am working on anthem(reverse order i know) but i don't think a movie will have time to do it justice i think a miniseries is in order.
