Nicolas Cage in Talks For Green Hornet Villain

greenhornet_cage

Well, I’m not sure I like where this is going at all. According to Variety, Nicolas Cage and His Amazing Hair are in talks to join the Michel Gondry-directed The Green Hornet. This is just a week after Stephen Chow dropped out of the role of sidekick Kato. (Months after he left the director’s chair.) Once upon a time I could have seen Cage really killing this sort of role, but I haven’t seen him do anything inspired in a long time. He would be a “gangster villain”, but still I just come up with a looped image of his Fu Manchu from the Grindhouse trailer Werewolf Women of the SS.

Cue cries that the casting for this has gone off the rails, but in some ways it makes sense. Columbia Pictures has Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg writing a crazy take on a superhero no one cares about, so someone in an office has to get some names attached that people will recognize. Diaz fits the bill, and people do still go see Nic Cage movies. What can Michel Gondry make out of a cast that so far looks to feature the unlikely trio of Rogen, Diaz and Cage? Who knows, but the guy has made good stuff out of Legos and cardboard, so… (this is where someone makes a crack about the cardboard acting better than Cage has recently.)

The trade also notes that Cameron Diaz remains in talks to join the picture as “a reporter and love interest.” Meanwhile, Kato’s identity remains a mystery. For the time being, I’ll go with this reasoning: bad guys like to kick the crap out of women, and we know Cage can do that. As proven by the following clip. And if his work in The Green Hornet is even half this entertaining, I’ll watch it ten times.

Never seen the new version of Wicker Man, but holy crap that video is hilarious.

If this were being made as a serious adaptation I'd be worried but it seems like a perfect move for a comedy. Oh, Mr Cage you've fallin' quite far haven't you.
  • Nic: "I cut my hair for NO ONE!"
  • Well we know Nic Cage can be a murderer. He killed the art of acting already.
  • Ender
I was totally going to make a "not the bees! NOT... THE... BEEEES!" joke and then I saw the youtube video embedded after the cut. Awesome!
  • Yoji
If his role is more comedic I can see his performance not being that bad maybe even good, but who knows. This is one eclectic cast of people for a movie.

bring on a movie based on Fu Manchu!
  • I have provided the proper headline for this article. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3437/3741047947_...

I hope this rumor isn't true. Anything involving Nicolas Cage automatically sucks.
  • LOIV
Yeah wow. This is as bad a choice as John Travolta playing a "villain"
  • Nick Cage is like Keanu Reeves. They are only good in certain genre kind of movies. AI believe this is too soon to tel for me. 40/60 says its gonna BOMB!!!

    EX: good: ConAir, Faceoff etc...
EX: Bad: Knowing, National Treasure, etc...

I Guess that makes me a pre 2003 Nick Cage fan. sew me.
  • Dan W
    DO NOT WANT!
  • Konrad
Please no. Nicky, I love you in National Treasure but that is about it.
  • Octoberist
OMG. I almost had a heart attack.

I thought it said Green Lantern at first.
  • joker93
    That clip made my day
  • Weyland_Yutani
Castor Troy is still awesome in my book.
...and Knowing will someday get the respect it deserves.

Doesn't change the fact that any Green Hornet film with Seth Rogen involved has no chance in hell to be good.
  • cineprog
few names for kato, jakie chan, jet Li. the trouble with Seth Rogen he Known as a funny man.
to give the Green hornet film more stability depending on weather the film is going to be funny of serious nic cage and the above mention names would be good casting i think.
  • Thankyou thankyou thankyou for that video. F**king hilarious!

Now please can we keep Cage (and his hair) out of the Green Hornet.
  • ziggi

  • fanboy_d

The interesting thing I find is that both Cameron Diaz and Nicolas Cage have starred in films directed by Spike Jonze (Being John Malkovich and Adaptation, respectively) which they were both quite good in. I often felt Spike Jonze was in a similar league as Michel Gondry, sharing similar sensibitlies and working with some of the same people like Charlie Kaufman and Bjork. Also, I might be wrong on this but wasn't Cameron Diaz at one point attached to star in Be Kind Rewind or was that Kirsten Dunst?

Of course both of those films are over seven years old and not Superhero movies, so that might not mean anything.

I still think they should book Mark Dacascos for the Kato role. glad to see Nicolas Cage is on board, but that's the attachment I'm waiting for.

he won an oscar 13 years ago, and ever since he's been whoring himself out to the biggest paycheck. he's become such a joke with his crap remakes and pointless sequels. 10 years ago i would respect as an actor, but now he's just paycheck acting. and the audience can tell. i'm so irritated when crap actors like him keep getting cast for the sake of a "big name" even though his resume is filled with junk.
