aquaman entourage

Another bit of new information revealed in the THR DC Comics article we mentioned earlier tonight is that Warner Bros is currently seeking pitches from screenwriters on big screen adaptations of Adam Strange and Aquaman. Apparently
Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way production company is producing the Aquaman film (among their 20-30 other projects in development).

More people probably are aware of Aquaman than Adam Strange, so why don’t we start with Strange.

Adam Strange

Created by Gardner Fox and Mike Sekowsky, the character first appeared in November 1958. Strange is an archeologist who is suddenly teleported from Earth to a planet called Rann, where he has been called on to protect the planet from “extraterrestrial threats.” Many people have noted that the concept is kind of a cross between Edgar Rice Burroughs’s John Carter of Mars and Flash Gordon.

Aquaman was created by Paul Norris and Mort Weisinger in November 1941. The sea-based superhero has the ability to live under water and communicate telepathically with sea creatures. His abilities have been mocked in pop culture, often portraying his powers as useless in comparison to the other superheroes. The character is also a founding member of the Justice League of America and was originally part of the now shelved George Miller-directed JLA live-action feature film project.

Aquaman famously was used as part of the plot of the HBO television series Entourage, where (show spoilers follow) James Cameron directed Vincent Chase in the fictional big screen adaptation, which also featured Mandy Moore and James Woods, as the love interest and villain respectively. The movie did huge business at the box office (in the fictional show storyline), earning just over $116 million, beating Spider-Man’s then record-making $114.8 million.

HBO even published a fake Box Office celebration advertisement in the Hollywood industry trade newspaper Variety. At the time, Cameron, who made a cameo appearance on the show, said he received phone calls from acquaintances congratulating him. Some of them even admitted that they didn’t even know anything about the film, none the less that he had directed it. CNBC was also fooled by the fake advertisement and ran the story on television. A sequel was made without Chase, directed by Michael Bay, written by Kevin Smith and starring Jake Gyllenhaal. You can watch a clip from the show where Vince and the boys trek out to the scorching hot Valley to watch a screening of Aquaman.

After the success of Smallville, Warner Bros filmed a pilot for an Aquaman television series for CW. Developed by Smallville creators Al Gough and Miles Millar, and directed by Greg Beeman (Mom and Dad Save the World, Smallville, Heroes), the show was said to be of simular quality of Smallville (which isn’t saying a whole lot) but without the Superman brand name. CW ultimately passed on the series, but the pilot episode was released to the public on itunes and X Box Live. You can watch the trailer below.

Adam Strange is a cool concept. and even as a fan of the character, not sure how an Aquaman movie would be.
  • Aw, I clicked on this link on the hope I could make an Entourage refrence, but you beat me too it, so I guess I have nothing to say...
  • The_Kid
Was gonna make Entourage joke but I don't need to, but seriously Aquaman. Never found him very interesting, wonder how they'll do it,
  • eddymovies
I think the Entourage-Aquaman clip was waaay more interesting than that TV show trailer.
  • babyjaypan
ahaha the aquaman tv trailer looked whack as fuuuuuuuuuuuck
  • Are you saying it's good or bad? Why is it that people try to make the least amount of sense possible when they type. The internet has done terrible things to slang and grammar.
  • helper
He opened his statement with a laugh then proceeded to call the trailer "whack". Read the context clues. I believe he didn't like it. Lesson of the day: Someone calls you whack...don't smile because its never a compliment.
  • babyjaypan
that slang's been around before the internet.

    thanks HELPER
  • Hmmm... Maybe the Humboldt squid attacks and the floating biological mass in Alaska are just really fancy viral marketing campaigns for Aquaman...
  • sma
By "biological mass" you mean "common algae".
  • Algae is biological, and it has mass just like everything else made up of matter. So yes, common algae is a biological mass.
  • sma
Yes, but its about as logical as referring to a group of people as a "biological mass".
  • DiCaprio is huge into saving the environment. Aquaman will help him. Save us Aquaman!
  • Aquaman? Really?

    Aquaman vs Whaling (EXCITING!!!)
  • Excuse me? Aquaman will be about war. Except underwater and with fish armies.
  • Fuck It, They should just do it Entourage Style. then again the cw pilot was ok.
  • Octoberist
Adam Strange has always been a cool character but he was strongly influenced by John Carter of Mars...I wouldn't mind a movie on Strange but we'll see how they handle it.
  • Topolab
The aquaman clip on entourage is actually pretty damn good. If they really had someone like Cameron directing it, it would be a pretty good action/drama superhero film.
  • Guest
I personally cant stand Entourage. Same shit every episode. But I watched the Aquaman pilot and it was actually really good. And no he doesn't fight whalers, learn some facts before you talk shit.

"Many people have noted that the concept is kind of a cross between Edgar Rice Burroughs’s John Carter of Mars and Flash Gordon."

Like I did yesterday on twitter when explaining who he was to Alex of First Showing?
  • WHY AREN'T THEY MAKING SUPERMAN????
  • Is that cool, I love the Smallville TV thing and this is a spoiler from it. Very cool, I hope it will come soon.
  • Name Required
If I have a pitch, to where do I send it?
  • Merciful_budah
Lame as Aquaman is in a comic book world (especially compared to the other members of the JLA) I feel like an Aquaman movie could actually be cool. Talking to fish sounds kind of silly, but imagine a big ol' underwater battle where Aquaman is fighting some dude with his trident and commanding an army of sharks to fight on his side. Underwater fight scenes are relatively new grounds for much of the film technology developed in the last few decades. Gettting a director with a real vision (like say, I don't know, James Cameron or something) to visualize the 3 dimensional aspects of such a battle could be really cool.

As for Adam Strange, He's a dude with a Jet Pack and a gun fighting alien invaders. VERY solid concept. Could be like the Rocketeer and be a good watch or could be like Flash Gordon and be a HILARIOUS watch. Ether way, I'll be in line.

Check out DC's current weekly comic "Wednesday Comics" its a throwback to the newspaper comic strips of the days of old. Brilliant artists and writers!

Paul Pope's "Strange Adventure" starring Adam Strange would be an awesome direction for a "strange" movie. I would love to see this movie done with some retro cold-war styled goodness rather than the glossy CGI plastic superhero films we've become accustomed to seeing.

About 2003, I met with Mike Carlin in his office to try to pitch him the idea for an Adam Strange Film. Julie Schwartz and Carmine Infantino had both pushed me into the idea.

We had a wonderful conversation, I gave him a few good story lines. (I was the one that suggested that Strange be found on homeless in NY on skit row as a broken drugged out character--and I still have my plot cards to prove it!).

He liked my story lines, (I was trying to revive Adam for the comics). However, He told that Adam was a "B" list hero, poorly received in the 1990's mini series as a character "who couldn't tie his own shoes".

Mike as a gentleman, he politely lead me from that meeting giving me the advice that I would never get the rights, and "go invent your own spaceman"! (his exact words).

9 months later, a 2nd Adam series was published by Carlin and Diggle (with a twist on my opening). We exchanged several follow up emails, and left it pleasant. (Though I dout he even remembers me now).

I have as great cross generational hook.
I see the Man of Two Worlds' epic as a Greek drama, based the Classics, John Carter and Flash Gordon. It could make a great film. It needs a fan base to support the project.

Help me bring this forgotten hero to life.
I want IN on the Adam Strange movie! Who are the principle contacts?

I hope AQUAMAN comes out in theatres one of these years. I know who can play Aquaman and Adam Strange ? Leonardo Dicarpio and Mark Wahlberg. The Supporting Cast to the AQUAMAN Movie are Amanda Seyfried as Princess Mera, Zac Efron as Aqualid, Hugh Laurie as Ocean Master, Dennis Quaid as Tom Curry, Daryl Hannah as Atlanna Curry, and Cayden Boyd as Young Arthur Curry.

Mark Wahlberg who starred in 2001's PLANET OF THE APES can play and star in ADAM STRANGE ? How does that sound ?
