Walt Disney Pictures has released an international (Italian) movie trailer for Robert ZemeckisA Christmas Carol. Disney had previously released some footage from the film, but this is the first trailer. I’m sure this trailer is a lot more impressive when viewed in 3D. Also, I should warn you the recording is very dark and in Italian. Watch the trailer after the jump, and leave your thoughts in the comments below.

The film is being billed as “a multi-sensory thrill ride re-envisioned by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Robert Zemeckis,” capturing “the fantastical essence of the classic Dickens tale in a groundbreaking 3D motion picture event.” The official plot synopsis follows: Ebenezer Scrooge (Jim Carrey) begins the Christmas holiday with his usual miserly contempt, barking at his faithful clerk (Gary Oldman) and his cheery nephew (Colin Firth). But when the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come take him on an eye-opening journey revealing truths Old Scrooge is reluctant to face, he must open his heart to undo years of ill will before it’s too late.” Carrey not only plays Scrooge, but also the Ghost of Christmas Past, the Ghost of Christmas Present and the Ghost of Christmas Yet To Come. And Oldman does triple duty as Bob Cratchit, Marley and Tiny Tim.

Disney’s A Christmas Carol hits theaters on November 6th 2009.

the animation on the ghost of his friend still sucks, but the rest of it looks good enough
  • dazedzombie
I'll save my $12 and watch Muppet Christmas Carol at home, thank you very much.
  • MovieGuru85
i will be doing the same
  • neolier
Me too... Dont like Carrey and Robert Zemeckis' best times are long gone.
  • Matt Zunich
    Ditto.

What happened to you Zemeckis? you made Roger Rabbit... and Back to THe Future.... god, he's gone the route of speilberg and lucas.
  • monkeymafia
c'mon it's automatically better than Forrest Gump and I'm throwing him into the James Cameron bin of people making films for technological advancement for advancement's sake.
  • super_aj
Isn't it sad? This generation's best directors have been seduced by the siren call of not-quite-there-yet awkward looking over-use of cgi. Well, Lucas was always a mediocre director.
  • So true. Too bad for Carrey. He would've been a great live-action Scrooge.

i think really need to see a film in 3D, haven't seen anything in the new 3D yet, my local cinema only just got its 3D projector installed last week.
is anything good coming out in 3D over the summer or do i save my experience til avatar?
ps. i'm a glasses wearer i've heard this makes a difference

A few days ago, /film posted a comprehensive entry of all the upcoming 3D films, check it out here: http://www.slashfilm.com/2009/07/14/the-ultimat...

I wear glasses too and the 3D glasses fit fine over them

I have to wonder why this goes to IMAX when 2012 which comes out very close isn't and imo, rightfully deserves the IMAX treatment.

Anyway the animation looks ok for now but gonna have to wait to see more to judge better.
  • Allm0st
I think I will catch this on DVD...maybe.

Does anyone else think the animation looks to be a step down from Polar Express and Beowulf?

Restrictions of realism in detail worked wonders for Monster House, but unless this footage isn't fully rendered, it comes off much more robotic and clunky than any of the past ImageMovers films.
  • yungl1nk
    Totally agree
  • super_aj
yeah, It's been a while since i've seen Polar Express, but it doesn't look like any progress in the race for photo-realism has been made with this. The animations of the character models still look like a guy acted them out in a mocap suit. joints that should move don't, and joints that shouldn't 'waggle', do. idk a whole lot of animation though, thats just what I'm getting. The close up at the end of the trailer looked fairly impressive though.
  • arthera09
I will wait to judge any of the animation until I see an official trailer that is not pirated. I have faith in Zemeckis and I think this movie has a lot of potential. I think Oldman will really bring a lot to the table and I love the idea of him taking multiple roles in one movie. It is like 3 times the Oldman in one movie.
  • Gennaro Gattuso
    Looks terrible.

Also, I can't see anything in that trailer that couldn't have been done in live action - what's the point in a director as conservative as Zemeckis using motion capture when he doesn't bring anything remotely imaginative to the table.
  • YazzyDream
Huh. Thought the first time I looked at it and it looked terrible was because the movie wasn't complete. It still looks terrible. And CGI still looks like crummy video game animation. What crap.
  • quintushalls
    ..ewwwwww, cam!
  • miggie_biggie
Saw this attached to Harry Potter IMAX 3D on Wednesday night. It does looks a little bleh but the 3D, especially on the IMAX screen, was AMAZING.
  • eimer
My only concern with this film and Zemeckis's other two previous films/animations is "Why not simply shoot it in live-action"? I dunno. Seems like a waste of talent, time and budget to me. And, to be honest, just like Beowulf and Polar Express I'm not really that excited to see this flick either - even more so after seeing this trailer. Jim Carrey is screaming in terror through the whole thing.

Why do some people paint with watercolors and some with oil?
  • i saw a preview for this in REAL D 3D when i went to see Ice Age 3 in theatres. looked amazing in 3d and i will for sure be seeing it that way. but the trailor has been out for a few weeks though.
  • jason B
i know that a lot of hard work went into making this film, but i just can't get past two things:

    1) i've seen/heard/read/experienced this story in so many different formats, so many different times, that i really just don't care to see another version of it.

    2) motion capture still does absolutely nothing for me.

i hate to be so negative, because i know they busted their asses working on this one, but i gotta pass.
  • super_aj
dude, I totally agree! When I heard Zem's next project was gonna be a Christmas Carol, a while back. I sighed in disappointment. What is his obsession with Christmas movies? They're sooo over done and bring nothing new to the table. oh well.
  • BlackManJew
Why couldn't they do it in live-action... the animation sucks. what were they thinking???
  • Joe
The animation of the "You will be visited by 3 spirits" guy is dreadful, and reminds me of a guy in a Bioshock cutscene. This looks like a regression from earlier mocapped films like Beowulf, actually.
  • Andyrooskie
I don't really mind motion capture, but that is seriously some of the ugliest character design I've seen since the humans in the original SHREK.

    Or maybe DELGO. Good God.
  • Oh it looks pretty good, but no movie for the cinemas I think.
  • Will the Italian version be available in the US!
  • I'm sure a lot of people have noticed and mentioned; but the CGI looks like video game graphics... and not in a good way, as I've seen better cutscenes in some games. These like like something a la PS2. Horrid. You take someone as animated and eye popping as Jim Carrey who makes sense as a perfect Scrooge.... and.... you use him as a voice actor for cgi versus having him act... hmm. Right, that makes sense. And I know it's Mocap and with whatever process he probably contributed a lot more than his voice... But CGI will NEVER replace raw human performance, something film studios need to recognize and stop trying to do otherwise.
  • Rockie
never minded the mo cap tools.......we've gotten some jaw dropping things from it.

i just wish Zemeckis wasn't the only guy on the front lines.

as for this trailer i don't hate it and i don't like it........i blah it
  • I like Jim Carrey. I think this might be ok. probably won't watch in theaters though.
  • industrai
at 0:53 i see a dong coming out of jim carrey's neck, what is that supposed to be?
  • mpezz
"Also, I should warn you the recording is very dark and in Italian."

It's also very bootlegged. WTF? Did you not notice this or do you just not care about posting legitimate items on this site.

And I have to laugh at those of you judging whether or not it looks good based on a crappy low quality youtube video that was obviously shot in a theater on a crappy low quality camcorder. Christ, folks. I'm not a big fan of Zemekis's motion capture output either, but at least wait until you get some high quality footage before saying the animation is a "step down" from his previous work.
  • vladimus
Hm, this might work... Jim Carrey's always too animated to take seriously, and Robert Zemeckis' animation is always too wooden to take seriously. Put them together, and you might actually have something that's believable.
  • Brett_F
    Shark still looks fake....
  • profgradytripp
Is it too much to hope that Zemeckis followed the original Dickens at all? This is a read that I recommend to everyone!. You only think that you know this story. Reading the original is still the best way to enjoy the story.
  • I am big fan of Jim Carrey and really like this movie. I like every form of him.
I enjoyed this movie lot and i think it is worth to spend money on it.
