[Update: As he casts Machete, Robert Rodriguez seems bound and determined to upstage Sylvester Stallone's The Expendables. Now The Playlist has a good source that says Steven Seagal is also on the list. More to the point, it seems like he's not just on the 'in talks' list, but much closer to being set to be in the film.]

Robert Rodriguez is finally getting around to direct a feature film adaptation of the infamous Grindhouse faux movie trailer Machete, with he will co-direct with his longtime editor Ethan Maniquis. Last we heard, production was scheduled to begin before the end of July. BloodyDisgusting obviously has spies in the Rodriguez camp as they’ve broken a bunch of stories on the Rodriguez-produced Predators, and now has a crazy list of actors/actresses who will be featured in the film.

The biggest shocker is Rober De Niro, who has apparently taken the role of Senator McLaughlin. Rodriguez has ties to Tarantino, who definitely has ties to De Niro, so its not impossible. Other cast includes Danny Trejo (obviously), Michelle Rodriguez of Fast and the Furious and Lost fame who will be playing Luz, and Jonah Hill of Superbad fame, who will be playing Julio.

Rodriguez wrote the script a while ago, and with financing available from Overnight Productions it’s time to make it happen.  It isn’t clear if the movie will be released direct-to-video or have a small theatrical release. Watch the original Machete trailer from Grindhouse below (NSFW):

Trejo banks at my local Venice CA bank, and every time he's in there (which is pretty much every time I am,) all I can hear is 'force marker'

    what about danny d vito

This movie is going to be awesome! I’m hoping for a full theatrical release that will kick everyone’s ass!
  • casting Steven Seagal wouldn't conceivably be out of the question. i feel it would kind of be like how Quentin Tarantino gave new life to the late David Carradine.

haha, I wouldn't go to that extent, but I'm hoping this will be a good gig fro Seagal.
  • This is great news. I love that Seagal turned down Stallone, but went for this. I cannot f*@king wait. I just hope all of the cast from the trailer returns. Glad that DeNiro may be playing the Senator. I was afraid he took away Jeff Fahey's role.

There was an offer to Seagal to be in The Expendables?
  • if the movie's anything like the trailer, it's gonna be killer.

    Seagal?! Noooooooo!!!!!!!!

rodriguez isn't an idiot. i'm sure there is a completely logical reason for casting jonah hill. there's probably some sort of humorous character which is perfect for him to play or something. would he really put him as anyone else?

Both Roddy and Tarantino make some odd casting choices that always seem to work well. They're both good at envisioning what they want, there is a reason for everything.
  • I don't know if you coined the nickname Roddy, but I am using it from now on.
  • I once asked Danny Trejo to mentor me right after school, but he said no. :(
  • I can see De Niro and Michelle Rodriguez but... Jonah Hill? That just seems... out there. Especially when you throw in Danny Trejo. Of course, I never saw the trailer so maybe Jonah Hill fits but he seems out of place with those 3 people. 3 of the most badass actors of all time and you have... Jonah Hill. That's messed up

I doubt these people would be in a direct-to-video film starring Danny Trejo.

im glad rodriguez choose deniro.i miss robert de niro and al pacino' acting.they are still legend of hollywood.
also do you know when rodriguez begin shoot sin city 2?

Does this mean no Jeff Fahey? Is there no God?
  • I don't see why Jeff Fahey wouldn't be in it. Unless his character is named Julio (which I highly doubt), I'm pretty sure that Fahey would return. With the exception of the Senator (who we really only see from a distance anyway), I think that the characters being played by DeNiro, Rodriguez and Hill haven't been seen yet. I really want this to happen and want RR to stop blowing smoke out his ass and just give us a movie.

I just re-watched the trailer and am relieved that the Senator is a different character. All worried over nothing... This doesn't prove the existence of God though.
  • Agreed.
  • hmmm. Interesting.
  • fanboy d
    they better keep jeff fahey

That's pretty cool, Jonah Hill in a rodriguez film is gonna be interesting to see. Robert and Michelle being in it is pretty cool too. I wonder if Cheech Marin is gonna still be in it.
  • I'm having a hard time caring anymore. Grindhouse came out two years ago and all we've seen is a lot of noise signifying nothing. The movie was great, and I love the idea of making more of them, but that's all it is right now, an idea. They tease and build, but nothing happens. Both Tarantino and Rodriguez are guilty of this, but Rodriguez especially. Sin City was going to have, what, like three more sequels? We haven't seen one sequel, let alone three.

As much as I hate to use this phrase I must. I'll believe it when I see it.
  • My thoughts exactly. Poor Robert has just been nothing but hot air lately.
  • meh, the best part of the trailer is the 70's voiceover...

Oh look, someone doesn't share you opinion or thoughts on something you like, so you bash them. You're the true idiot.

    Burn!
  • I highly recommend watching the trailer again, if you haven't recently. It fucking rocks.
