In December of last year we saw an extended (3-minute plus) French promo reel for I Love You, Phillip Morris. Now there’s another trailer coming out of France that very likely will be a lot like what we get to see in the US closer to the film’s February 2010 opening. Starring Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor, I Love You, Philip Morris is a love story, a prison break story and a con man movie all in one. It did incredibly well at Sundance, and evidently for good reason: it looks fantastic and wildly entertaining. See the clip after the break.

This trailer is shorter and punchier than the extended clip. It gets a lot more of the plot and structure across, where the long clip was a bit more indulgent of the main character. Carrey plays Steven Russell, a nice married guy who basically wakes up gay, and dives headfirst into the full image-oriented aspect of the lifestyle. To fund his new fashion taste and romantic exploits, he turns into a con man; in fact, as Peter noted before, the movie was pitched at one point as a Catch Me If You Can meets Brokeback Mountain. When Russell ends up in jail, he meets Phillip Morris (McGregor) and the two quickly fall in love. When Morris is transferred away from Russell, the besotted inmate stages a series of wild prison break efforts to reconnect with the love of his life.

If the movie is half as energetic as this trailer suggests, it should live up to the early hype. This certainly does a lot more to push the movie than the execrable yellow poster, seen in part above. And, I should note, this (being a European trailer) is slightly NSFW. Not super NSFW, but just a little bit. Be sure to watch it at home eventually, though, because it rocks.

  • That was a swell trailer, I'm kinda excited to see that. Carrey sure is getting good at this acting thing.
  • dag_yo
Yeah, it looks like this may be a hybrid of the "actor" and "comedian" in Carrey. I am excited to see this.
  • Jim Carrey is the best person for this roles... can't imagine any1 else
  • Since when has Carrey not been a good actor? Since he was funny? Does he have to be serious to be a good a actor? I was actually very impressed with him in "Me, Myself, and Irene." Not a great movie, but Carrey was great.

And if you want serious, how about The Truman Show? Even the Majestic.

He's a very talented actor, Number 23 aside.
  • Uh, you just have to say "Eternal Sunshine" to end this debate. Eternal Sunshine!
  • The beef *I* have with Jim is that whenever he does a comedy, he ends up being another version of every single character he's already played. The Mask=Liar Liar=Yes Man=Ace Ventura=everything else. And then when he does drama he's just so superb and amazing. I mean, despite what people say, The Majestic blew me away. And Eternal Sunshine is one of the best movies I've seen. So yeah, Jim's talent is divided in two. The actor and the comedian. And one of them hasn't aged so well.

Hello?? Man On The Moon!? he's greatest performance by far!
  • me
This looks very funny! Maybe the return of funny Jim Carrey!
  • SomeGuy
    I'm intrigued.
  • looks AWESOME. and yummm Ewan MacGregor just gets more sexy as he gets older... *drools*

Someone hurry up and release this damn film.
  • Justin Craig

Like everyone above, pure magic, can't wait to hear more about this movie.
  • bubbajones24
Does anyone know the song that is played through out the second half of the Trailer?
  • will
wow, it was sweet and funny but I can see alot of anti gay lovers not liking this movie one bit
  • quintushalls
I really want to see this film. I'm just hoping the male nudity isn't extreme. In fact, I was surprised at how tame Bruno was. It could have been much worse.
  • rockinrors
I was thinking that this was going to be a bad rom-com style thing. (Damn that title)
    Yet the trailer = (y)
  • Mike
Brokeback Mountain on laughing gas. This looks terrific, count me in!
  • BTR
I was fortunate enough to see this movie in Nashville about three months ago. Very good. Much better than I expected. This trailer, to me, gives you a much better idea of what the movie is actually like.
  • Swarley
Why is it when I hear the song that was used for the first half of the trailer (after he says he's gay) I think of Spongebob Squarepants? Was this song used in a cartoon at some point? I'd love to know if anyone knows what I'm talking about.
  • Swarley
Ok, I remember now. In the episode "Jellyfish Hunter" of Spongebob there's a part that show's Mr. Krabs running an entire contraption on his exercise bike and listening to some music on headphones. I'm pretty sure that's the song he's listening to. I have no idea why I remember this.
  • AWhitman
not one negative comment, yet.. thats a good sign
  • Elissa_Mac
I'm frothing at the mouth to see this movie! Can't wait!

And I love that so many other folks want to see it too. :)
  • guardrail
    Seems pretty gay to me.
  • Pete (original)
    exactly what i was thinking!
  • recklessMG
Much tighter trailer. A vast improvement on the promo. This movie actually looks coherent. Props to the editors!
  • BlackManJew
eh i hope they don't release this f@g fest of a movie in the US....
  • mattyeomans
I know, how will your delicate, christian sense of morality handle this film?
  • drewcharles
not so long ago people would have said similar things about black people in films. comments like yours are exactly why the rest of the world hates america. i saw the film last night. it's excellent - and the gay storyline is incidental. the fact that you, and US film distributors, see homosexuality above an amazing and entertaining story is so sad. America, Land of the Free? Whatever.
  • BlackManJew
I know what I said is like beating a dead horse, but hell, in this day and age it doesn't get old!
  • I saw the premiere of this film at Sundance. It was wildly entertaining. This new trailer gives a better sense of how manic and fun this film is. I have to give Jim Carrey respect as he certainly doesn't have to stretch with a role like this. He was great.

I'm wondering if a few of the more out there scenes will be cut for the American release.
  • LuMendz
I actually wanna watch the film. I was very much uninterested with it at first, but now I'm fairly intrigued. That trailer was good and I was laughing at parts.
  • xorith
this would be funny if gay sex wouldnt intervene.
  • jimmay
    i really liked yesman.
  • The trailer looks a bit cheesy and Carrey over-acts...
  • I actually was not interested in this movie but while reading the reviews of this movies. I wanna to watch this movie. Movie is looking to be interesting. :-)
  • Pete (original)
while this looks funny and fresh, it still looks too gay for most people, imo. i would see it, but i'm not gay, and i would probably be grossed out during half of this film. let the "closet homo" comments begin!
  • That's the great article! I just pass 'n read it, two thumbs up! ;)
