Prince of Persia: Sands of Time

Entertainment Weekly’s comic-con preview issue hits store shelves today, and features the above first official photo of Jake Gyllenhaal as Prince Dastan from Disney’s adaptation of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. Paparazzi and leaked set photos had appeared online previously. And then there was that small bit of preview footage that aired in May.

Mike Newell’s film, based on the popular video game, tells the story of an adventurous prince who teams up with a with Tamina (Gemma Arterton), a feisty and exotic princess, to prevent a villainous nobleman from possessing the Sands of Time, a gift from the gods that can reverse time. Prince of Persia: Sands of Time will hit theaters on May 28th 2010.

Looks like the production quality is up there. AAA star... hmm.

I haven't seen anything from it but I'm not expecting this to be "THE video game movie", probably will be enjoyable though, on the "Tomb Raider" level of enjoyment I'd say.

It really annoys me that the prince of "Persia" is a Caucasian American actor, I mean really, then again it is Hollywood and I should not expect otherwise.
  • I understand your annoyance. I think back to a movie like "21," that is based on real events and most of the people involved were Asian. When they first announced that Jake Gyllenhaal would play the prince, I thought back to a line in Tim Burton's "Ed Wood."
Orson Welles: "I'm supposed to do a thriller for Universal. They want Charlton Heston as a Mexican."

Just annoys me, we live on a world of 6 billion people and this is who they choose, nothing against Jake G, but just because the main character is of middle-eastern decent doesn't mean they have to be avoided like the plague.
Nothing much that can be done unfortunately, but seeing as it is a game IP ported to a film, I do not expect the film have any impact.

errr... except for the fact that you're all wrong on this one guys. Persians actually look more like caucasians than the typical middle-eastern appearance (i.e. arabs). Yep that's right, they have predominantly WHITE features... it's just when you look at the current "President" of Iran these days you could be fooled for thinking that they are arab looking.. this is not correct though. This is also why Hitler didn't not dislike Iranians/Persians and sided with them.
  • That may be true. But its still the perception that some people are going to have a something titled "Prince of Persia" and not have the star be middle-eastern looking or decent. I am not an expert but I am sure they could have found an actor that was Persian or some Persian in him to play the part. And I am sure others will point out and talk about it has well when the film comes out. Now after saying that is it going to hurt the box office for the movie, probably not.

arabs never called themselve white and they dont look white like Jake Gyllenhaal at all i know alot of middle eastern and they dont look like caucasians

middle eastern look more like latinos if you want to compare i know that cause one of my friends who are middle eastern who are from the UK went to the US and alot of american people thought he was latino LOL
  • A cool look in the movie, can't wait to see the first trailer.
  • Prince of Persia movie...not thrilled with the idea. Maybe Hollywood should try to come up with their own ideas.

I'm trying to figure out what will make Jake G's character likeable, without coming off as being too similar to characters like Indiana Jones, Brendan Frasier in The Mummy, to name a couple.

What do you think his character will be like?

you cant tell me they cant find a really persian damn u Hollywoodand all your racisim

One of the reasons I have any hope for this film is that one of the writers, Jordan Mechner, is actually the writer for the game its based on, so at least we shouldn't have to expect a butchering of the source material. The game, while decent enough mechanically, had some a very cinematic feel going for it, so with the backing that Disney is giving, we may see a Pirates caliber movie....sadly minus Johnny Depp of course, but hopefully at least a decent film and not a Uwe Boll desicration.
  • Right. I kind of hope this has a "Pirates" feel to it as well.
  • i dunno bout this one.
  • mbellerbrock
Well said, haha, sums up my feelings on the subject.
  • shadow
I have high hopes, they kept the time dynamic, that atleast should create some interesting dynamics in the film.
  • I think this movie could be great, I don't particularly understand the pre-hate that it's getting so strongly.

Not sure if this has been made aware, but there was a Prince of Persia movie poster in one of the scenes in Confessions of a Shopoholic.
