Straw Dogs Remake Rounds Up Cast

Variety have named Kate Bosworth and Alexander Skarsgard, alongside the previously cast James Marsden, as the three key players in the Straw Dogs remake. Marsden will be playing a screenwriter relocating to Mississippi from LA, Bosworth his wife who travelled to La La Land with aspirations to become an actress, and Skarsgard her high school boyfriend who sees her return home to Mississippi as a way to reignite his lost reputation in the town.

When I heard that Straw Dogs is being remade, I wanted to hear that it would be handled by a director as unflinching and uncompromising as Sam Peckinpah, helmsman of the original (Chan Wook Park would have been ideal, for example). That it is Rod Lurie in charge, sometime film critic now best known for (occasionally polemical) political dramas like The Contender or TV’s Commander In Chief, leaves me both weary and a little curious. Whatever else he may or may not be, Lurie certainly isn’t a guy to pursue an easy gig with a simple knock-off cash in.

I’m hoping that the Skarsgard role is significantly expanded and deepened from it’s counterpart in the original. Not only would that set the two films even further apart, which would be a wise thing to do, it could also help offset any easy reading of the story as pro-LA, anti-Mississippi. I’m not sure many of the arguments against Peckinpah’s film really hold much water, but it was definitely accused of portraying the people of Cornwall as somewhat simple and hickish.

Should the original and remake storylines follow at least fairly closely, there’s going to be a series of violent and provocative confrontations in this new film that will not only guarantee an R rating but also require sensitive, intelligent handling to sidestep sensationalism and simplicity of moral argument.

I’m very impressed by the breadth and depth of James Marsden’s resume and this role seems to add yet another colour. Seeing him re-teamed with his Superman Returns spouse might be a little odd for a moment, however, but I’m sure they’ll get me over it.

Straw Dogs... seriously? Sam Peckinpah is rolling in his grave, and despite the interesting idea of iteration, who has the gravitas to make it even half as unflinching?

This is a horrible, horrible idea. And I gurantee it it will be still extremely pro-LA, anti-MS (suprised it isnt the even more cliched Louisiana). I do agree with you about Marsden and Skarsgard being talents, but I have never thought highly of Bosworth. The movie has all the makings for a huge disappointment

If Rod Lurie wants to make Deliverance 2, he should have the balls to call it that.

That interview should convince everybody what that man is going to do to Straw Dogs.

While I am neither familiar with the original or the new director, leaving me with little to no opinion of this film, I am excited to see Alexander Skarsgard in a major role. I have enjoyed watching him in both Generation Kill and True Blood.
  • I'm outraged that there's even talk of a Straw Dogs remake. What travesty. And I'm still pissed off there's gonna be an Alien remake. when I look at Hollywood in the 2000s and compare it with the 1970s, one can't help but roar with laughter at how pathetic and un-original we are today.

    I hope the remake fails.

great that's just what we need. a watered down hollywood version of straw dogs. can't wait to not see this one.

Skarsgard is a stellar talent but i'm with the rest in saying this is a bad idea

on a side note Gasper Noe said he walked out of Straw Dogs....odd

Straw Dogs is my all time favorite film, to me, it is perfect, and cannot be improved upon. It is terrible that they are remaking it. Fortunately, the acting talent here isn't bad, Skarsgard is great, I am a huge fan of both True Blood and Generation Kill. Marsden is alright, I guess I haven't seen him in enough.

I am not worried though, not really interested at all to be honest, I am sure I will see it, but until I hear it's scene for scene, or I see a trailer that looks great, I am not interested at all.

ah crap. i recently saw straw dogs and the feelings it put me through were unbelievable. dustin hoffman was absolutely brilliant and just the fact this remake is not taking place in europe destroys what half the film was about anyway. sadness all around
  • why in the fuck would we need a straw dogs remake?
  • robertriggle
Brendan, you try and be optomistic towards the outcome, yet you know that the odds are against it turing into anything more than failed rehash.
In this day and age we actually have to question it beign rated PG-13, which is pathetic in its own right, but also a strong possiblity. And while a rating may indicate the potential level of bloodlust, it in no way dictates the quality of the film.

    why this...???...

A horrible idea. May as well remake Taxi Driver, Midnight Cowboy, The Last Picture Show, Cuckoo's Nest, Deer Hunter, Marathon Man... etc etc etc... Hollywood SUCKS now.... leave films that can't possibly be improved upon alone.. How about just rereleasing the originals on the big screen so that those of us who weren't fortunate enough to experience them the way they should be the first time around can get the chance to appreciate them even more.
