When Peter Jackson and Guillermo del Toro get The Hobbit going before cameras soon, Ian Holm, who played Hobbit hero Bilbo Baggins in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, won’t be back in big rubber feet. Casting Bilbo is a big deal; any actor chosen will have to hold his own against a horde of effects while still putting across a lot of character. Now three names are increasingly being rumored as options for Jackson and del Toro: Dr. Who’s David Tennant; Wanted’s James McAvoy; and Harry Potter’s Daniel Radcliffe. Musing about the options and probability of all three after the break.

Peter Jackson will be at the San Diego Comic Con next week, leading to supposition that we’ll get a casting announcement then. David Tennant is an interesting option; he’s making his first Comic Con appearance next week, which was originally surmised to be part of a push for a Dr. Who feature film. Now the Hero Complex blog of the LA Times wonders if he might not actually be there because of The Hobbit. Tennant would certainly be a neat choice. He’s done great things in Dr. Who and isn’t wildly exposed outside of genre circles, which would allow mainstream audiences to approach his work as Bilbo with fresh eyes.

That’s exactly why having Daniel Radcliffe’s name in the rumor ring doesn’t make sense. He’s already demonstrated an interest in playing smaller roles after Harry Potter; why would Radcliffe jump right into a long commitment to another big fantasy adaptation just as his last Potter films wrap? He can’t possibly need the payday.

That leaves James McAvoy, possibly more flexible and capable than Tennant, and only a bit more exposed. Sure, a lot of people saw Wanted (and some even saw Atonement and The Last King of Scotland) but McAvoy is hardly a household name. Tennant could get Bilbo’s good nature perfectly, but it’s easier to imagine McAvoy playing a little game with Gollum, down in the dark.

Or, it should go without saying, maybe it will be none of these names at all. If I recall correctly, McAvoy was originally rumored as a choice by one of the British tabloids, and trusting those is about as safe as chowing down on week-old roadkill.

I agree - McAvoy is born for the part.
  • Yoji
Word, he's a great actor. He may not be a household name but I could definitely see him in this part and more capable than the other 2 and just being LOTR it doesn't need no star power.
  • th3
    how about danny d vito
  • theAguilar
Danny DeVito is obviously much too old for the part, but I'm just going to assume you don't know anything about The Hobbit other than the word "hobbit".
  • Imnotthatguy
DeVito might be too old, but all the aforementioned are way too young. They made that mistake in the first three, casting Wood as Frodo. I understand the young appeal, but in the books he was supposed to be near 30, if I remember correctly, and certainly older than the other Hobbits. Furthermore, since holding the ring kept Bilbo looking young, shouldn't he look about the same age as he does when we meet him in Fellowship of the ring? It's even a detail they include in those movies.
  • DerekJames
Exactly. As Gandalf remarks, "You haven't aged a day."

I often wonder why Ian Holm is overlooked to reprise the role.
  • Recluse420
In the books he is well over 100 years old, Hobbits don't age like humans.
  • mbellerbrock
Yeah, Frodo was 20 something to 30 something throughout the movie, people tend to forget that the time from when Gandalf was away learning about the ring to when he returned to tell Frodo what it was was something like 10 years. Also, Hobbits age much differently, the coming of age is 33, so I would assume a 20-30 year old hobbit would look about like a teenager. However, when Bilbo finds the ring he's in his 50s, which means he should look about... I dunno 30 something to us. Which makes all these actors a bit young looking to me, Radcliffe is definitely too young tho.

Also RE to DerekJames, you're assuming Gandalf hasn't seen Biblo since he found the ring? Pretty sure that's a horrible assumption, I haven't read all the appendices and the History of Middle Earth but I'd be very surprised if Gandalf had never visited Bilbo again for over 50 years.
  • JB
    How about Danny Trejo?
    : D
  • fanboy d
macavoy's the best of those three, if only because tenant's lanky. bit young though. none of them have an ian holm vibe...
  • fanboy d
  • Andyrooskie
    Still pulling for Martin Freeman.
  • fanboy d
    YES!
  • tHE
Holy crap! Freeman would be great!!!!!! Seriously, Hollywood needs to pay more attention to the comments on slashfilm. They're pure genius.
  • Anonymous
    Nice Choice!
  • The Great Cambino
That's the best idea I've heard so far for this part.
  • Oh snap!!! I never thought of Martin Freeman - well, he's now #1 on my list...
  • Swarley
I always thought he looked like a love child between Billy Boyd and Dominic Monaghan anyway...so it would definitely be appropriate.
  • SS
    McAvoy plzzzzz
  • McAvoy for sure. he's incredible
  • Dimmie
God, i just hope not Radcliffe.
  • TheDaftPunk
    James McAvoy is my vote.

I'd like to see Radcliffe get more work, but playing The Boy Who Lived and Bilbo? Eh....
  • Quack
    To Daniel Radcliffe-
STAY THE HELL OUT OF LORD OF THE RINGS
    that is all
  • McAvoy is perfect
  • GunslingerFollowed
McAvoy would be fantastic. I'm more and more impressed w/ this guy the more I see him. Radcliffe needs to move on to something different. I see a slew of rom-coms in his future.
  • Ender
This article needs a better image of McAvoy, try this one for more of an idea of what he would look like as Bilbo:

  • L1A
Zach Galifianakis would be the perfect Hobbit
  • benu
McAvoy could work wonders, but that mention of Martin Freeman has left a big smile on my face.
  • I can still see Jamie Bell nabbing the part, due to him working with jackson on king kong. and he is tintin in the spielberg/jackson trilogy.
  • Peter R
Well I will be the odd on out and vote for Tennant. He has got more range then people give him credit for and certain is a more appropriate age/half figure. McAvoy just doesn't pop out the screen enough for me to stand up with Holm, he's just sort of there for much of the movie. David brings real life to the screen and your eyes instantly turn to his.

If you remember Bilbo was a sassy, sarcastic son of a b*$#h and though he was dragged into the journey, hardly ever stopped complaining about it. No doubt McAvoy is a good up and coming actor, but I think Tennant would be a better choice overall.

I also hope we get some quality British acting in the dwarves. They need to be engaging yet slightly dislikable, until the end when you all but fall for them.
  • Tennant is my favorite choice, but that's just because I really like him in Dr.Who. As far as him playing Bilbo, not sure if he's the best.
  • abergamo
McAvoy would be an excellent choice for the role. I almost want them to pick more of an unkown though.
  • Tits Lickum
To me McAvoy just seems to be perfect for Bilbo. Personally Radcliffe never does much for me. Not a terrible actor by any means just nothing really below the surface.

    Never even heard of Tennant.
  • OUt of these three my pick is Tenant, although I agree with the above - Martin Freeman would be an awesome choice.

Radcliffe is too young for it - I wouldn't say that he can't be Potter AND Baggins though, not if Harrison Ford can be Han Solo and Indiana Jones
  • JKW3000
McAvoy's probably the better pick, but Radcliffe (and I'm not exactly a big HP fan) actually bears a better resemblance to Elijah Wood than I realized. I think I'd be more interested if he got the part, at least just to get him over the eventual trap of being seen as Potter forever.
  • Marie
David Tennant, absolutely. He's the closest version of a young Ian Holm of the three. Not to mention a fabulous actor, who absolutely deserves a chance to do some mainstream film work.
  • mcgruff
love radcliffe, but 2 wizard-related series is just too confusing. this isnt harry potter and the one ring to rule them all. it's the hobbit. mcavoy needs to get this
  • mcavoy!
  • Rae
I am a David Tennant fan and would love to see him land a movie role with this much budget behind it, but I'm not sure I can see him as Bilbo. I think he'd have to be CGI'd to within an inch of his life. I have no doubt he can carry the picture and stand up to the special effects. But I don't know if he reads as HOBBIT to me. My vote would be for James...though I agree that I'm not sure he could come through the CGI as strongly as I believe David would. Someone other than these three would be my vote, truthfully. Martin Freeman again...ftw!
  • Egger_Buckland
    Peter Jackson will play Bilbo.
  • Quicky
Wouldn't you think Jackson is there for District 9? Maybe he'll do something else, but it doesn't seem like he/they would want to overshadow D9. He's one of the biggest parts of that campaign.
  • dagreenman18
I want Tennant, but McAvoy is good too.
  • Evan
I like the idea of Tennant too, but all of these guys appear to be too skinny. I always pictured Bilbo as heavier. Just like Holm. And Tenant has those freaky bug-eyes.
  • Name
Hey, what happened to the previously posted Ewen McGregor rumors?
  • jason B
the important thing to remember, is that in the amazing hands of PJ/GDT that any of these 3 would be brilliant...that said, mcavoy would be a dream come true. but i'll be fine with whomever they choose.
  • rockinrors
All good choices, yet Radcliffe has already gotten a huge movie franchise...
    It would be selfish..
Haha, what would it be like if Hollywood thought like that..?
  • tootalufilms
harry potter is one of the worst actors working today..dr who is perfect for bilbo..just PERFECT.please cast himt
  • Octoberist
are you just saying that because you don't like the Harry Potter films? I mean, what's your argument for that?
  • zstrankman
Ok Radcliffe is out. Seriously. No chance. Just don't do it. The perfect choice here is easily MacAvoy. I just see him as Bilbo. No doubt. He can do it.
  • ryz
    DAVID TENNANT DO IT....!!
