Clerks and Chasing Amy on Blu-Ray in November

Kevin Smith has confirmed that two of his most popular and critically acclaimed films Clerks and Chasing Amy will be released on Blu-Ray in November 2009 with a few new surprises. Smith revealed the news on Twitter, where the filmmaker is nearing almost 1,000,000 followers. The Clerks release will be the same exact contents of the the tenth anniversary DVD release Clerks X, plus a never before released documentary that fans have waited over five years for. Details and trailer after the jump.

Oh What a Lovely Tea Party is a documentary which was filmed during the making of Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back by Smith’s wife Jennifer Schwalbach Smith. It was originally intended to be a bonus feature on the Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back DVD, but it was deemed too long for the release. Too Long? The film has screened at Smith’s Vulgarthon film festival, and was nearly three hours long. Smith had also intended to include it on the Clerks X DVD, but the inclusion was scrapped for similar reasons. But fans of Smith’s films will finally get the doc with the Blu-Ray release of Clerks.

The Chasing Amy Blu-ray will include an “awesome” new look-back documentary, as well as all the features from the original release. And Smith even posted a photo of a Kevin Smith 3 Movie Collection that Miramax Films will be releasing.

As much as I love KS and his films, Clerks seems the least likely film to benefit from the upgrade to Blu-Ray. I'll still get it because I want the extras, but it does seem a bit of a waste, being a upgrade from VHS to DVD to the Clerks X release, now to BD. *sigh*
  • He actually brought this up on SModcast like a month ago, if not longer.
  • i thought he said the 3-set cover MIGHT happen
  • Blu-ray

I refuse to get excited about shite upconverting. Like they say, you can polish a turd as much as you want, but in the end, it's still gonna be a turd.

Not to say that either of these movies are turds. I have a special place in my heart for them both, but unless they send the original negatives to Criterion to do the Blu-Ray, color this passable.

Wait... Why not Criterion? Why are they not going to Criterion? These movies are an important part of the 90's in many peoples opinions... Why not Criterion?

damn, what am i supposed to do with my copy of Clerks X and Chasing Amy when these come out?

Is Criterion releasing the blu-ray of Chasing Amy?

I don't know if I can get behind a blu of Amy unless it's Criterion. But then again, I would love to see that docu, and if it's got a Q&A like Smith had mentioned WAYYYY back when this thing was first hinted at, then maybe I'm sold. It IS one of my faves, after all. But no way I'm buying ANOTHER clerks X. I think DVD is pretty enough for that one.

It has to be Criterion because the only Chasing Amy DVD that exists in the United States is the Criterion collection DVD. It says that all of the old special features will be on the blu-ray and Criterion owns all the rights to those special features.

    Completely unnecessary.

I simply don't understand the new fascination with re-releasing everything on Bluray. Yes, most Scifi and grand scale movies deserve to be on Bluray, but dramas, "talkies", and films that aren't meticulously re-imaged to the higher quality format are just a waste of money.

A simple rule of thumb: If you said "I have to see that on the big screen!" after seeing X movie's trailer, then you will want a high quality Bluray cut. If you said "I'll wait for that to come out on DVD or Cable." after seeing the trailer, then do exactly that.
  • This is kind of ironic. When the DVD of Chasing Amy came out didn't he say "F*** DVD!" as he was an avid supporter of laserdisc?

It was ironic when it was on the DVD commentary, not so much now.

Chasing Amy is a genuine classic
    Even girls like that film

They probably chose to put Clerks on Blu-Ray because of the space it has to fit that 5 hour long documentary.

I have been waiting for this release. Clerks is a great example for Blu-Ray upgrades.
