A new British trailer for the Sherlock Holmes picture by Guy Ritchie has been let loose, timed to coincide with the release of the new Harry Potter. As well as running in our cinemas it is of course online, and you can see it after the break. While the overall structure of the thing and much of the material is the same as the US cut, there is quite a lot of new mucking about too. If you’re looking forward to the film, as many are, it probably gives you more of just what you’re waiting for. On the other hand, you like I might be more interested in an alternative take on Holmes that the BBC are preparing…

Despite the Ritchie film’s trailer looking like it contains a large amount of plot material, it doesn’t really. I dare say this will be corrected with a later trailer that walks us by the hand through acts one and two, as is the way with most promo clips these days. Or perhaps, this being a mystery of sorts, they will go easy on us and let the secrets be secrets.

Personally, I know full well what the plotline is and what threat this supposedly supernatural Lord Blackwood actually presents, but I don’t think it would be accepted for me to publish it here, even with a spoiler warning. Word would get round and probably boomerang back at us and I’d end up getting into all sorts of trouble. If you really want to know, though, you can just ask nicely and I will at least point you in the right direction. I would desperately want to know this info myself if I didn’t, and I’d be asking anybody I thought could fill me in.

At least during planning, scripting and shooting, there were seeds being sewn for a sequel. Whether or not these clues and surprise cameo make it through to the final cut is anybody’s guess, but I’m sure it hangs on studio confidence in the finished product. I expect they’ll know exactly what they got here - a kind of Sherlock Holmes theme park ride. And I suspect it will actually go down very well with audiences everywhere.

In less disinteresting Sherlock Holmes news, the BBC have reconfirmed their new series based upon the great detective’s casebook. Created by Stephen Moffat, the new Dr. Who showrunner and Tintin movie co-writer, and Mark Gatiss, The League of Gentlemen member and Lucifer Box author, it will star Benedict Cumberbatch as Holmes, Martin Freeman as Watson and Rupert Graves as Lestrade. The catch this time is that it will be set in present day London.

The first series of this reinvigorated Holmes is to be directed by Coky Giedroyc and comprises three 90-minute episodes.

  • looks like a james bond movie

Pretty much exactly the same as the previous trailer, only major difference is the ending in the carriage.

I'm still fascinated by this film, it could go tits up and the first time I saw the trailer the tone of the film completely baffled me, they seem to be going for "Sherlock Holmes of the Carribean". But the more I see of it the more I think it could be brilliant.

As for the main thrust of the plot hmm. I'm guessing they wouldn't actually have it as anything really being supernatural, so I'm thinking something steam punk-ish? An early atom bomb or something?
  • We get it.. you're too good for Sherlock Holmes and you know the ending. And why... why would you want to brag about that? Why do you enjoy knowing the ending of a story before seeing it? That totally takes away the joy and mysteriousness of a movie. Get a life, and get your nose out of the air.

This movie does look good, in my opinion, and I can't wait to see it.

We're all too good for half baked nonsense. Guy Richie is a charlatan. And he wasn't bragging was he? Just offering.

Personally I don't mind knowing the plot of a film in advance because I can still either appreciate the deftness of its telling or not as I would have anyway.
  • This trailer was pretty much the exact same trailer we saw last month minus the ending. I don't think it reveals a single thing and if it does, I don't think I'll notice until I see it. Either way, I love Guy Ritchie and Robert Downey, Jr.. Add in the acting talents of Jude Law and Mark Strong and I surely will be seeing this opening day. It looks fantastic to me.

Oooooh, please - who needs a modern Holmes? No one!
  • vladimus
Like it or not, there already is one. His name is Gregory House, M.D., and if ratings are any indication, audiences seem to like him quite a bit.

Oh puh-lease! Who needs two of your same comment! NO ONE!
Welcome to the 21st century buddy. Time to brush the cobwebs off and take in a fresh breath of air. ;)

why is none of the bbc's orignal programming actually original?
  • Rockie
i think it looks fun............and i leave it at that

This looks amazing. Robert Downey re-invents every character he tackles to give him more gusto and incorrigible charm than he ever has been displayed with before.

Keep in mind, the original Holmes of literature was a dope-addict and a bit of a fiend, but of extraordinary gifts.

This Holmes is actually closer than any of the BBC shows ever attained.
  • Tad Ow!
And Rachel McAdams looks hot as hell.
  • Captain Awesome
Re-invent? He plays the same character for almost every role like this. I wouldn't exactly call it a stretch for him. Other than the bad attempt at the English accent.
  • The ex of madonna sucks, it was all the way layer cake director Vaghn who was the creative one.
The sad tought, this is the end of the good warner years.
    Bye Bye Warner.
  • just a guy
The slow-mo makes it look retarded.

It might not be cinematic genius, but it will be an entertaining...too bad Martin Freeman didn't play Watson in the big screen version. He does awkward humor quite well. I'm not much of a Jude Law fan myself...his acting alway comes off as a cross between skeevy and effeminate in my opinion.

Looks like it will have its moments.

What happened to the Will Ferrel/ Sacha Baron Cohen version? Havent heard anything about this in quite some time.

love Sherlock Holmes in any form - look forward to the movie very much and I am glad that people still care enough about this hero of the greatest of yarns to make a new movie. Jeremy Brett 1st then Basil Rathbone - I will let you know later if I feel Mr. Downey cuts the mustard!
  • SherLock Holmes is my favourite one..I love to watch his any movie any time.
You are true ..he looks good in any form.

Law and Downey Jr. are a great duo. They kind of have that old movie-thing going with some modern touches. I like it.
