It wasn’t long ago that Bill Nighy was first rumored to be in the last two Harry Potter films as new Minister of Magic Rufus Scrimgeour. Then he confirmed the role and now, as Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince opens, he’s talking a bit about the role. Read on for Nighy’s comments to SciFiWire and quite a few potential spoilers.

Nighy says that as soon as he returns to the UK from his promotional tour for G-Force he’ll get to work on Potter 7.

…there’s no giving too much away, because everybody’s read the books. So he’s a kind of tragic figure. You have that element. And he knows what’s coming. So that’s a very moving thing to play. He’s also very powerful, and he’s had a very complicated progress to the top. And he has an interesting relationship with Harry, because Harry views him initially with complete contempt, but then it’s softened by subsequent events.

…there’s one where he comes and delivers Dumbledore’s legacy to the three children. He gives them all of the things that Dumbledore has left them, and that’s when it’s first indicated that he may not be around for much longer. So it’s quite an affecting scene.

On the page, many of the character’s first big scenes actually take place in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince,  but those have been bumped to the seventh film. Having seen the current chapter, that’s no surprise; there’s enough in it already without introducing another new character, and this way the on screen version of Scrimgeour may get to stand in as a pseudo-replacement for Dumbledore. As a new authority figure, naturally he has a contentious relationship with Harry, but they achieve some sort of balance in the end. Makes sense, but the question is, have director David Yates and writer Steve Kloves created any new scenes for him? (One of their inventions in Half-Blood Prince, was among my favorite small moments in the movie.)

  • I am very, very excited about the last 2 Potter films. Is it true that Deathly Hallows will be broken up into 2 films, though?
  • catch42
Yep it's definatly going to be two films.
  • Name
Of which invention do you speak? Inquiring minds want to know!

jesus christ, the ads on this site are getting effing ridiculous. there seems to be less news on this site recently - but more gigantic, obnoxious banners. congrats on the income!
  • You've got to be joking. You don't pay a dime to read this site. What do you care if there are ads?
  • Sketch
What do you mean what does he care? It's distracting, annoying and overwhelms the page. Not to mention slows down the browsers when each ad is the exact same animated one. That's all. Sure if people don't like it don't come here. You just gotta put up with it till you can't anymore.

Yeah Russ, I'm curious about the scene you are referring to. The one I can't get out of my head is the story Slughorn tells about the fishbowl and the flower petal. It can't be found in the books but tenderly handles the memory of Lily Potter in a way that is giving me goosebumps even now.
  • the scene he's probably referring to is in the beginning with the death eaters destroying the bridge and in London.

It was a great scene that's not in the book, though they do mention it happening in the book.
  • *Possibly Spoilers*

My favorite two scenes in HBP were of course the flower petal and fishbowl, and the scene were Hedwig and Harry's trunk arrives and everyone starts asking if Harry was there.

Maybe he's talking about one of these scenes. Come on Russ, don't keep us in suspense.
  • Bill Nighy is fantastic.

Everyone should watch his performance in the State of Play BBC series. His character is the best.

Hi Russ, I'm guessing you mean the end scene when all the wand pointing at the sky to eliminate the dark sign?
For me, that's the only scene really moved me in the new movie!

    *Possible Spoilers*

From what I remember from the books, there are a few scenes that are made up. Just off the top of my head:
    1. The scene in the subway at the beginning of the movie where the girl flirts with Harry.
    2. Harry's arrival at the Burrow (Ron's house). I may actually be wrong about this one.
    3. The burning down of the Burrow + the run into the fields and what not, I don't remember this at all and am pretty sure its something I'd recall.
    4. The wand thing at the end. But the end was all changed anyway, the only part they essentially kept was Dumbeldore's death and Snape's reveal as the half-blood prince.

The bridge was in the book, it just wasnt in detail.

I think hes talking about the weasleys house burning. That is one scene that was new.

I also wanted to mention I did not like this movie. I felt like it did not explain the purpose of the half blood prince, did not talk enough about voldermort and what harry has to find (c'mon people, you still remeber the other things he must look for?) so I'm wondering how the hell hes going to find the others when those specific memories werent shown.

Also, I didnt like that they did not include dumbledores memorial, where was he buried folks? And the ACTION, the fight against the death eaters? I really don't care if it will 'be seen in the next movie' who cares? it was apart of that book. and it was important.

I understand they cant fit everything into the movie, but please, don't cut out things that help make the movie/book make sense.

I felt the movie was too foucsed on the romance and its graphics. David Yates, you better make 7 the best ever. I don't want to see it go down like HP6 did.

I definately agree Kristen, we were kept waiting for so long, just to realise that in the end it was such an anti-climax that you regret watching it or regret reading such fantastic books so you can follow the crowds of mindless people who think the films are ingenious and full of story!!!!
