Ghost Rider Sequel/Reboot Still Under Consideration

While promoting the goofy secret agent guinea pig movie G-Force, Nicolas Cage was roped into talking about the potential Ghost Rider sequel by MTV. Or is that a reboot, not a sequel? What do you call it when some of the principal talent wants to try again with a movie that they screwed up the first time? Cage, who plays his comments cautiously, talks about re-conceiving the whole story, and going “in a whole other direction.” What Ghost Rider v2.0 might be, after the break.

For the past couple years Nic Cage and various other original Ghost Rider participants have talked about continuing the franchise, despite the lackluster box office of the original, and earlier this year Peter reported that Columbia was officially soliciting writers for pitches and that Cage had been signed for another film. But no one really wants to see the story continue from the original film, which was poorly realized.

Cage seems to agree. “I would like to do a re-conceive. I would like to go in a whole other direction, and I think that’s what they’re talking about. I would make it much less of a Western and more of an international story.” We’ve heard before that the character could end up working for the church in Europe, in a story that has Da Vinci Code sort of influences.

Not that the fact that the movie was a Western was the problem at all. A good script could have done right by the old west influences in the story. And there was Sam freakin’ Elliott, and you’ve got to work pretty hard to misuse him. The problem was the script and direction, both by Mark Steven Johnson, who didn’t seem at all suited to the material. Hire a writer who gets it and is willing to really have fun with the idea of a demon riding a motorcycle and things might work out just fine.

That movie was a god damned joke. And Cage was wrong for the part. It should have been rated R and done with a set of balls.

They turned Ghost Rider into some hokey superhero.

I personally kinda liked Cage as Blaze, but that movie was all sorts of bad. I would like to see a reboot with a new director and definitely a new and better writer then the first movie had. I've always liked Ghost Rider so I hope for a darker movie.

ghost rider was horrible. why would there be another one?
  • probably because they are starting to see how comic book movies can make money if they are well done.
  • MCA
...and they don't want to buy a new license, ho ho.
  • The bad superhero movies either have crappy effects, or pay no attention to the source material. Ghost Rider had both going against it.

Did the writers ever even read the comics? Since when did Ghost Rider just twirl his chain like he's playing double dutch and defeat an opponent? He beats them senseless, then uses his penance stare.

And Blackheart was a joke. He never actually looked like Blackheart until the final 10 minutes of the movie.

Preacher is coming out (written by John August), so we can let this die.
  • RocknRolla
Holy shit, I cannot begin to describe my disdain for that film. Since when was Ghost Rider cheeky and fun? Never! He's a very dark and brooding character that should scare the shit out of people. I mean, when his head bursts into a flaming skull, it should look monstrous, frightening and unforgettable. Basically, it needs to be adult. This is one movie that deserves The Dark Knight treatment. Go dark. Go realistic.

You can tell Cage really wants to do another one.

Even if this "reboot" turns out to be amazing, I can't imagine audiences will be able to shake the stench of the last Ghost Rider from their minds. This is just a bad idea.

Forget Ghost Rider, Nic Cage needs to reboot his career.

I agree that Ghost Rider was a sad, sad film. Everyone was miscast, said actors were just horrible (Wes Bentley should have gotten the Razzie that year) and the jokes were incredibly flat. The scenes on the bike were fine but just standing around the CGI wasn't great. But with all that said, I wouldn't call the first one a movie that underperformed at the box office. It opened to $45 million in 2007 and went on to make $115 million. Considering it opened in February, that's pretty good, especially for a comic book movie based on a much darker and lesser known character. If I remember correctly, it was Nic Cage's best opening of his career (Before National Treasure 2 later that year).

    Ghost Rider 2 ideas:
    must be rated R.
No Cage he's a dieing star.
Cooler bad guy. They managed to make satan into a unscary pussycake.

To answer Russ's question, i say the term would be "Requel"

A requel is not a direct sequel to it's predecessor, since it may re-imagine a bit of the origin story. Yet takes place after the events of the original, and characters from the original return, though not directly referencing the events of the original, they are affected by said events.

Punisher:War Zone is a requel to the Thomas Jane Punisher movie.

The Incredible Hulk is a requel to respect to Ang Lee's hulk.

Arguably, Evil Dead II is a requel to The Evil Dead.

As someone who haven't read the comics yet, I can say very easy, that Ghost Rider wasn't so bad as a movie! It was king of cheesy, but it wasn't so bad.
It didn't work not because it was different from the original (very few people outside US had seen the comix so for the most part it would've been something new), but because it was advertised so f^^king much, that anyone could've guest about 70-80% of the story, the special effects and the key moments just from the trailers & stuff...
Hell even I didn't watch it when it came out. I was so had enough from all the trailers, spots, interviews, ... and so on, that I didn't want to see it for another few months. Actually I watched it about half a year later...
  • A new Ghost Rider woulde need a new Ghost Rider, Cage just doesn't fit.
  • adampoole
cage was really good in the film, perfect balance of his humor and his seriousness
  • I was talking about the way he looks. He simply doesn't look the part.

I hated Ghost Rider as much as the next guy, but to say it did lackluster at the box office, is simply not true.... it opened up number one with 45 million, and that was with a February release date.... Sure, it only made 115m domestic and 112m foreign for a worldwide total of 228m altogether, but production was 110m and with DVD sales, I'm sure they turned a healthy profit....
  • adampoole
me and everyone i talked to said the first ghost rider movie was amazing, i've never not tired of watching it over and over again.I hope they do a direct sequel and not a do over it was great, people just don't know what they are talking about.
  • Joneeaeee lehtineee
They really should do a requel, kinda what they did with Incredible hulk.
and much much scarier and darker Ghost Rider. and much much better villain.
    Go dark.
