Despicable Me Movie Trailer

Despicable Me

Earlier today I posted a complete listing of all the major 3D movie releases being developed for the next 4 years. One of the films was Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment’s Despicable Me, a computer animated film about a trio of orphan girls cause the normally deplorable Gru to rethink his plan to steal the moon.

I kind of like the stylized character design. The voice cast line-up is pretty nice, with a handful of Judd Apatow regulars with a couple nice surprises: Steve Carell, Jason Segel, Russell Brand, Kristen Wiig, Will Arnett, Danny McBride, Jemaine Clement, Miranda Cosgrove and Julie Andrews. However, I’m not that impressed with the plot of the film, an unfortunately the two and a half minute trailer doesn’t even really show the film’s despicable main character Gru. Watch the trailer after the jump, and leave your thoughts in the comments below.

In a happy suburban neighborhood surrounded by white picket fences with flowering rose bushes, sits a black house with a dead lawn. Unbeknownst to the neighbors, hidden beneath this home is a vast secret hideout. Surrounded by a small army of minions, we discover Gru (voiced by Steve Carell), planning the biggest heist in the history of the world. He is going to steal the moon (Yes, the moon!) in Universal’s new 3-D CGI feature, Despicable Me.Gru delights in all things wicked. Armed with his arsenal of shrink rays, freeze rays, and battle-ready vehicles for land and air, he vanquishes all who stand in his way. Until the day he encounters the immense will of three little orphaned girls who look at him and see something that no one else has ever seen: a potential Dad. The world’s greatest villain has just met his greatest challenge: three little girls named Margo, Edith and Agnes.

Despicable Me hits theaters on July 9th 2010.

haha I loved the Great Wall of China scene.
  • First of all, I will state like I always have with anyone that I hate when studios market a CGI film by naming each and every voice actor. Who cares if Steve Carell is a voice. So is Miranda Cosgrove, and she's on a crappy Nickelodeon show. The names of the voice actors don't matter in the long run because voice work is much easier than actual acting. Heck, you can do voice work wearing nothing but pajamas if you wanted! The studios only list all the voice actors' names because they know that they may not have a good film in their hands. Does Pixar ever flaunt their voice actors in teaser trailers? They did at first, but now... who cares if the legendary Peter O'Toole is a voice. Everyone knows Pixar is synonymous with quality. If the studio knew this film would be absolutely great, they wouldn't have to rely on the names of those doing voices.

That being said, let me speak about the trailer itself. It looks like it'll be filled with a ton of references, as seen from the Alfred Hitchcock one in the teaser. I didn't like Ice Age, I didn't like Horton Hears a Who, I won't like this movie!

    Oh, right.
As if you've ever voice acted.
  • ever read an interview about someone who has voice acted? I'm guessing, no.
  • James
Gee, I love all the "despicable" stereotypes of mean old Americans - fat, boorish and pushy. For some, totally true. But this will surely be seen by an international audience, and I find it pathetic and (dare I say it) a bit racist. Will Jews be given big noses (I may be stepping on the plot, since I don't know the nationality of the lead character.)
  • scotty
I'm thinking they would. Give the other stereotypes in the trailer besides Americans. As long is it has a fair crack at everyone then whats the problem?

As British I fully expect bowler hats and bad teeth and as Scottish I fully expect ginger hair, kilts and a potty mouth !

    Good times!

That initial scene felt completely lifted from Sylvain Chomet's short film 'La vieille dame et les pigeons' (1998). Watch here - http://bit.ly/41a1nw

Not all that impressed with this trailer at all. Most animated films at least get a laugh out of me during the trailer, this one sadly did not.

At some point, an animation studio outside of Pixar will discover that appealing character design is actually kind of important. Closest that's come so far is Kung Fu Panda.
  • dagreenman18
The premise is great, the art is eye destroyingly bad.
  • khbh
    horribly ugly animation
  • mickche
I was suddenly remined of Where in Time is Carmen Sandiago?
  • John
I won't see it. The plot basically tells you what will happen. He will be a guy who was never loved. Probably abandon by his parents (is it odd how he looks like The Penguin from Batman and will probably have all the same traits) and never felt love. Then theses three probably annoying girl will teach him what its like to love. And though out the movie will have typical humor like the girls dressing him up, breaking his stuff and making him do typical girl things they would normally do with a mother type.
  • I don't like the trailer. It's not funny, the animation seems awkward and the plot is thin (for now).
  • concerneddontb
He has a point for now it looks suckish beacause we've only seen 20 min. and 30 sec. (not meaning to be rude)
  • The "Sweet Home Alabama" opening music did not match, was a patronizing attempt at reaching the general audience, and totally ruined any interest.
  • Martin
I totally agree, that song is so extremely overused. The editor or the director of the trailer just seems lazy.

A 2½ minute long teaser without any key characters from the movie itself and just the plot, (barely)? Not one laugh. BIG YAWN!
  • rockinrors
Could be awesome, if not for the dammned 3 girls...
  • Bubbles!
i think this movie will be very interesting. I despise the trailer (especially since it makes a small slight at Alabamians - we do NOT arrive in rusty buses, we do NOT have terrifying tan lines, we do NOT wear ridiculous cowboy hats, and we MOST definitely DO NOT have the kinds of cellulite problems that blonde mother has!
  • mrephun
    yes you do
  • O_O
    ugh no they dont mrephun
  • mrephun
When I first saw that sillhouette I thought this movie was going to be about the Penguin. Damn you, false advertising, damn you to hell!
  • SGT
The character designs are fresh and impressive! It's hard to judge the whole movie by the trailer - for now it has caught my attention and I'd definitely look forward to more.
  • namedhdj
One of the girls edith is a girl from my school
  • Thank You very much SGI. I saw the trailers of movie only but as you are saying we can't judge whole movie by trailers only so i will surely go for this movie. :-)
