kick-ass

Matthew Vaughn sat down with AICN for a 30-minute pre-Comic-Con interview about his upcoming comic book adaptation of Mark Millar’s Kick-Ass. It’s a very interesting interview, and I pulled a couple of excerpts for you to check out:

  • His Thoughts on the Rough Cut of the Film: “I don’t want to sound too arrogant about the thing because there’s nothing worse than someone saying, “I made the best damn movie of all time!”, then you watch it, and you go, “Yeah…” I can say this… not that it means much… but it’s definitely the best movie I’ve ever made. That doesn’t mean it’s a great film. But, for me, I think I punched above my weight.”
  • On Chlow Moretz as Mindy aka Hit Girl: “When you watch it… I will bet you any amount of money you want… anything at any odds… I’ll give you a million-to-one odds if you want… that you will a) fall in love with her, b) buy her, and c) think, “My god, I just saw the Jodie Foster/Natalie Portman of this generation.”" … “If this movie was STAR WARS, she’d be Han Solo.”
  • On the Look of the film: “I thought that if I shot it grittily, you’d then expect gritty shit to happen. So I thought let’s do the opposite; let’s make it glossy, so you could easily see these characters in SPIDER-MAN. but it’s like “What would happen if Spider-Man were in the real world?”"
  • On Test Screening: “We just test screened [KICK-ASS] three days ago, and I can genuinely say what LOCK, STOCK did for gangster movies, we’re doing for comic book/superhero films.” … “The test scores… I’m not even going to tell you what they were because you wouldn’t believe me. They were just phenomenal. And two of the things that were singled out for praise was that it was unique - it was like nothing anyone had seen before - and that it was fun.” … “Someone described it as “Teenage Tarantino”. And as much as I’d love to think I could walk on that man’s coattails, that a description that made me smile.”
  • On a Possible Sequel: “Mark [Millar] and I over a couple of beers came up with one of the funniest, coolest idea for a sequel that we would only be able to get away with if the film does well. We’d sort of dial it up to eleven, shall we say. (Laughs)”

  • Wow, this guy is in love with himself. Maybe that's why he's compared to Tarantino... honestly, I really can't take this movie seriously at all. I have yet to see anything to get giddy about.
  • Awe, well they've only had pictures shown, so unless you have a projector you're gonna have to deal with the lack of giddy until there's at least a trailer.
  • True, but I've gotten giddy through early pictures before. Early photos of Avatar are a good example. There have been a few others too, for me...
  • Well they haven't really shown anything for avatar more than green screen, concept art and a photo of a mecha suit. Really everyones giddy about it, but only for all the people who have seen footage and rave that it's going to change movies forever.
  • True, but it's true that concept are and photos can get people giddy. These just aren't doing it. They look staged and, in my opinion, lame.

I agree, but I adore Layer Cake and loved Stardust, so it does bode well.

I wanna hear more filmmakers talk like this. I'm sick of them being all humble and shit when they obviously wanna give themselves a pat on the back. I do appreciate those truly shy folk, but a lot of them seem to teeter on the edge of this.

IS HE TRYING TO SELL US THAT LITTLE GIRL? THAT'S ILLEGAL!
  • And I'm actually gonna place bets that this movie will be more like tarkovsky for teens.
  • Danisgod6491
I have a feeling this movie is going to suck just like the comic. They should have had Michael Bay do the film because Mark Millar (Wrote the comic) Is the Michael Bay of Comic Writers.
  • bubbajosh
That's Vaughn for ya...another Michael Bay in the making.
  • kindbuddy
arrogant wise maybe... hopefully not action wise.
  • Craigasorusrex
As arrogant as Vaughn might have come off the man has talent.

Layer Cake is one of my favorite crime movies and I found Stardust alright (bordering the line of meh but still entertaining).

If he is saying that "Kick Ass" is better than Layer Cake then he's got my attention. I'll give the guy the benefit of the doubt. If it turns out being bullshit then I've learned my lesson to take him for his word.

Until then I'm looking forward to this movie.
  • Talent? I can understand if someone like James Cameron talks up his movie. He has legit proof he can make a great movie. Vaughn on the other hand only has Stardust (66% by Top Critics on RT) for a writing credit.

Layer Cake can't even be compared to Kick-Ass, in my opinion. Vaughn wrote the screenplay for Kick-Ass and not for Layer Cake.

Honestly, movie sites have reported that the screenplay is good, but I have read those reviews and the play-by-plays and the story itself just seems... lackluster at best.

Perhaps the action makes the film, but this guy seems like the person who would write a screenplay that would have scenes that wouldn't transfer to the directors chair well, if you know what I mean...
  • I know I'm over-posting in this topic, but I read an interesting review (http://comics.ign.com/articles/854/854832p1.html) that, half way down, explains how Kick-Ass isn't original at all...
  • Wow... why is everyone giving Matthew Vaughn crap for his comments. I didn't think he was off-base at all. He's obviously excited about the movie he's made and he does want to sell the idea of the movie because he's looking for a distributor. He is NOTHING like Michael Bay and if you think he is then you should watch Vaughn's movies.
  • sma
Quite frankly I think this movie sounds (and looks especially) dumb. The comics are pretty mediocre at best.
  • Wow, Matt_Bacon wants Vaugn's head on a fucking platter. Chill out man, the dude's just proud of his flick
  • Rabstown
I'm unfamiliar with this comic, but if it's being associated with Lock, Stock and Tarantino, is it going to be ultra-violent and brutal? Can someone elaborate?
  • Rockie
just read the comics and they are good not great

that being said i have faith in this movie

Vaughn should have keep silent and sucker punched the genre if it was testing so well.....but that's just me
  • turok1134
I wonder, would people have preferred modesty, or even him bashing his own work? Would saying that he made a "decent enough" movie have been acceptable for you guys?
  • mozthagreat
    i hope this is epic.
